  • Ep.16 - Intergenerational Trauma with Sarina Herman (@rinabherman)

Welcome back to Asian Lifing and part 3 of 4 part special mini-series capturing the reconnection with my cousin Sarina Herman (@rinabherman) after a decade of not speaking or seeing each other. Note, you do not have to listen to this in order as the topic varies.

Growing up as kids of traditional Asian parents, we saw our parents and adult family members as the role models in our lives and that we would always turn to them for answers and think that whatever our experiences and behaviors were considered the norm. However, as we grew up, we realize that's not the case, and how much our lifestyle and value have deferred from our parents and their experiences. Although they did their best to raise us with whatever they know navigating life from their respective country to the United States, we have our own experiences and life having to navigate both our Asian and American identities.

Come join us on today's episode as we reflect back and shared our experiences with family traumas, how it affected both of us, our family dynamics, the physical and mental abuse we witnessed growing up and throughout our life. Now, as adults being both doing the inner work and healing, have come to a place, where we discuss the importance of Intergenerational Trauma in what it has taught us and why it's important to break that cycle! It didn't start with us, but we are responsible to heal and break the cycle for future generations to come!

  • Ep.14 - Reconnecting with our Roots with Sarina Herman (@rinabherman)

Welcome back to Asian Lifing and the start of a special 4 episode mini-series, reconnecting with my cousin, Sarina Herman (@rinabherman) after a decade of not speaking or seeing each other.

Our family traumas and upbringings in a traditional Asian/Vietnamese Family have to lead to a lot of conflicts and dramas between our parents and family growing up. There were a lot of fights and tension between family members growing up on our dad's side of the family, they just didn't seem to get along, which lead to an eventual rift and disconnect in our family after years, since our grandma's passing.

Finally, 10 years later and a lot of healing work between the both of us, where we are both able to talk to each other and began this journey to open up about the past, the wounds, and have open conversations with each other, and reconnect! Come join us on this episode as we unraveled the last decade.

  • Ep.12 - Shifting Mindset and Lifing with Mental Health & Disability

Welcome back to another episode of Asian Lifing! We have all know for quite some time, the healthcare experience and practice have been broken by the old way of thinking and approaches as we grew up and begin to understand and educate ourselves. It is definitely much more of the struggle for those living with mental health and disability, especially when it was considered a thing or consider very seriously back then, even though in recent days there have been more resources to support that. This lack of emphasis ties into certain toxic traits growing up in a traditional Asian Family definitely cause lots of damage and limit to someone's ability and overall mental health. Come join me on today's episode as I shared my experiences and thoughts on what's like to live with mental health and disability from a Vietnamese Asian American perspective while trying to navigate life and the overall health & care experiences in the US.

  • Ep.11 - #StopAsianHate and Mental Health with Jamila Ha (@jamzilla22)

Welcome back to another episode of Asian Lifing. While it is May and a month to celebrate our Asian American Identity as part of Asian Pacific Islander Heritage Month, it's also important to addressed recent events targeting our community and who we are. The Asian American community as a whole have been going through a time of collective grief following a year of rising and ongoing hate crimes, racial tensions, fear, and even mental health crisis amidst the pandemic. Its definitely been an emotionally, physically, and mentally draining time for Asian American Pacific Islanders (AAPI) and many Asians around the world, who've been facing violent attacks in a surge of racism and xenophobia. Whether it is seeing another Asian on the news or social media, who've been experiencing these unfortunate events, we can picture our own family, mom, dad, grandparents, friends, and significant others as a potential target that makes us all unsafe and living with fear. Now more than ever, we must come together, share our stories, speak up, and create a safe space for one another. In today's episode, I have brought on another special guest and a friend of mine, Jamila Ha @jamzilla22, who will be discussing her thoughts on the rising hate crimes, mental health, and self-care as a Vietnamese/Asian American woman. Come join us in our discussion as we hope this episode can be a safe space for others to connect, reflect, and come together.

  • Ep.8 - To All the People I knew, Thank You!

Welcome back to another episode of Asian Lifing! Endings suck... especially when there is no closure. We often fall for the fantasy that media and society have depicted of what relationship, friendship, and partnership should be like and that they are the happily ever after and the forever person. However, it is not like that at all, sometimes life gets in the way and it just does not work, that we have to go our separate ways, an ending of a toxic relationship, or simply you've outgrown one another through the process, whatever the reason may be. As painful as it sounds, we tend to chase after these fantasies and forced them upon, simply because we are scared to be alone or prolonged a relationship that no longer serves us because we are scared of the unknown. Come join me on this episode as I take a look back upon my life and share my experiences through a brief letter to the people who were a part of my life for better or worse, the tough lessons and hardship going through this process, and accepting reality as it is, with times come to experience.
