The fear that random violence can erupt without notice is making a negative impact on many students and teachers. For some, this sense of being afraid is very REAL and is inhibiting our motivation to succeed at our educational and career goals. The worldview of violence has changed so dramatically that many are afraid to dream, set goals, or network with others. Random violence in the workplace, public places, churches and school campuses has increased symptoms of anxiety and depression. These are Mood Disorders that are causing many students, including adult students, to develop serious apprehensions about planning a successful future. There is an underlying mood of disillusionment and ambiguity in America. We must strive to believe that amidst the chaos LOVE still exist. • Why Do Adult Students and Student Veterans Drop-Out-Live
According to research, nearly two-thirds of adult college students in the U.S. drop out prior to graduation! This is largely due to the lack of planning in all areas of life, sound advisement, and counseling intervention. Adult students with disabilities, who are parents, carry the additional responsibility of being a role model for their own children to finish school. There are many alarming reasons for Adult Students to drop-out from the idea of going to back to school or finishing the courses started. Awareness is the first step needed to motivate and encourage those struggling to meet the demands and stress of family, work, and school schedules. Hear a Special insight on mental illness and Miriam Carey. Join Dr. Applewhite and guests as they discuss how many overcome difficult experiences and transitions, especially Student Veterans with families.. • Understanding Students and Violence-Rerun
Adult Learners and Student Veterans, especially those raising children, must increase their understanding of violence in our society. The ongoing exposure to shootings, rapes, murders, and conflicts in our world is difficult to avoid if you use the Internet, watch TV, or attend school. Let’s continue encouraging each other to “make sense of the senseless” and seek to understand and minimize the tragedies of the many innocents like Trayvon Martin, Christopher Lane, Syrian children, and our Veterans. Much of the violence we are experiencing in schools is blamed on students diagnosed with a mental disorder. However, society must take on some responsibility for the exposure to violence in early childhood. Join Dr. Applewhite and Special Guest Midge Noble, Child and Family Therapist and Author in a very candid discussion that will help us understand how violent tendencies may begin and how to manage them.

  • The Impact of Stress, As It Relates to War, School, and Work
Students in classes from pre-school to graduate levels experience the impact of stress related to war, violence, and/or trauma. However, stress is subjective and all human beings react differently based on their genetic make-up, personality, experiences, and environment.  Adult Learners with PTSD or post-traumatic stress disorder experience stress or anxiety. People suffering from PTSD experience paranoia, flashbacks and generally have difficulty handling everyday pressures of work and school schedules. In addition, the competition for present and future jobs is another source of great stress for most Adult Learners. Dr. Applewhite and guests will discuss ways to minimize the impact of stress reported by Adult Learners and Student Veterans regarding conflicts in Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, African countries and other places around the world.   Listen to the episodes of the Student2Teacher™ show any day of the week and our schedule of LIVE shows by visitinghttp://blogtalkradio.com/student2teacher. • Threatening and Shooting Students Gets Attention
Listen to what Adult Learners, Teachers and Student Veterans are saying about why attention is finally being paid to persons with mental illness. Michael Hill was arrested for firearm possession on school premises in Decatur, Georgia. Unfortunately, there is more emphasis being placed on his diagnoses of Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia than the violence in our society. It is an injustice that no one paid attention to his needs until he became a “real” threat.
