  • 326. Shaping a Student-Centered School Ecosystem: Featuring Dr. Layne Dillard
What if the key to student success lies in the environment we create? In this episode of Aspire to Lead, Dr. Layne Dillard shares how building a strong, student-centered learning environment is essential for growth. She introduces the LEAD Framework, a powerful approach that emphasizes leadership and vision, engaged instruction, and data-driven accountability—all with students at the core.
Dr. Dillard also dives into innovative programs like Ready, Set, Work!, a simulated workforce experience designed to prepare students for real-world success, and discusses alternative education models that support at-risk students. Whether you’re an educator, administrator, or school leader, this episode is packed with insights on how to cultivate a thriving school ecosystem that fosters meaningful learning and lasting success.
    About Dr. Layne Dillard:
With 28 years in education, Dr. Layne Dillard has dedicated her career to transforming learning environments to drive student success. She holds a Doctorate in Learning Organizations and Strategic Change from Lipscomb University, an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership and Administration, and a B.S. in Secondary Education from the University of North Alabama. Her mission has always been clear—improving the lives of children through a student-centered approach to school.
Currently serving as an Educational Administrator in the Office of School Improvement with the Alabama State Department of Education, Layne brings 18 years of experience as a principal and district-level director. Before transitioning to ALSDE, she led a high-poverty school in a remarkable transformation—raising its state report card grade from an F to a B and achieving 100% proficiency in ACAP Reading for all 3rd-grade students, earning recognition as Alabama’s most improved school.
Layne’s expertise lies in high-performing, high-poverty schools, where she focuses on identifying and implementing strategies that break barriers to success. Over the past two decades, she has shared her insights at numerous conferences and was honored to speak at Alabama’s Dropout Prevention Summit, invited by the Governor in recognition of her outstanding work with at-risk youth. Recently, she was appointed by the Governor to the Board of Directors for the Children’s Trust Fund/Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board, furthering her commitment to student well-being and advocacy.
A sought-after thought leader in education, Layne has been featured as a guest on several of the nation’s top educational leadership podcasts, sharing her expertise in K-12 innovation, school improvement, and leadership.
With more than half of her career spent working directly with at-risk children—including over a decade leading alternative education—Layne is a relentless advocate for students. She firmly believes:
"We should never let what is difficult for adults become a reason for not doing what is right for children."

  • 325. Respecting Tradition While Driving Change: Featuring Adriano Di Prato
Society is evolving at an unprecedented pace, but are our schools keeping up? In this compelling conversation, Adriano Di Prato, co-author of Game Changers: Leading Today’s Learning for Tomorrow’s World, explores the balance between honoring our traditions and exploring innovation in education. We discuss how school leaders can adapt to a rapidly changing world, what it means to be a "game-changing" leader, and the role courage and purpose play in transforming schools for a future-ready model. If you're ready to challenge the status quo and rethink leadership in education, this deep and impactful conversation is for you!
    About Adriano Di Prato:
Adriano Di Prato serves as the Campus Director at LCI Melbourne, a progressive art, design, and enterprise institute of higher education that is part of a global network of 23 campuses, originally founded as LaSalle College International in Montreal, Canada, over 65 years ago.
Adriano is the co-author of the bestselling book Game Changers: Leading Today’s Learning for Tomorrow’s World, where he advocates for a bold new social contract for learning—one grounded in regenerative, long-term interactions that prioritise human-centred innovation, ecological sustainability, and the transformative potential of education. His work challenges the status quo, emphasising the importance of designing learning ecosystems that nurture both individual growth and collective wellbeing.
An influential thought leader, Adriano was named one of the Edruptors of 2022 by ISC Research UK and has been recognised as one of Australia’s Top 50 Most Influential Educators by The Educator magazine in both 2022 and 2023. In 2024, he was invited to deliver a keynote at the Second Arab International Conference on AI in Education in Tunisia, where he explored the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in reshaping education while emphasising unlocking the human dimension within educational ecosystems.
In 2023, Adriano's collaboration with Catholic Education South Australia led to the creation of Limitless Possibilities, a social entrepreneurial learning model that earned recognition in the inaugural ACER Teacher Awards for Curriculum Design and Implementation. Grounded in Catholic Social Teaching Principles and underpinned by Project-Based Learning (PBL) and Design Thinking methodologies, this innovative framework empowers students to create socially just and sustainable solutions for a better future.
Throughout his extensive 26-year career in secondary education, Adriano has held key leadership roles in curriculum, operations, and student well-being. This includes 12 years as Deputy Principal at Marcellin College, where his leadership helped establish the school as one of Victoria’s top-performing Catholic boys’ schools. He also served for 10 years at Caroline Chisholm Catholic College, including four years as Deputy Principal, where he contributed to the development of a vibrant and inclusive learning community.
Academically, Adriano holds a Bachelor of Arts (Design) from Monash University, a Teaching degree, a Master of School Leadership from the University of Melbourne, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Not-for-Profit Management from Australian Catholic University. He also completed a Theology study audit at the ACU Centre in Rome in 2017, deepening his commitment to Catholic education, which earned him Honorary Life Membership from the VCSSDPA in 2015.
Adriano’s vision for education is both hope-filled and deeply purposeful, as he believes education’s greatest calling is not merely to inform but to transform. He remains a sought-after keynote speaker, dedicated to fostering a culture of significance, innovation, and renewal in education.

          • We dive into the delicate balance of supporting struggling staff while recognizing when a different path may be best for both the educator and the school community. We also explore how to shift the evaluation process from a source of fear to an opportunity for growth, ensuring teachers feel supported rather than judged. • 322. Leading With Intention: Featuring Michael D. Nelson & Peter DeWitt
What does it truly mean to lead with intention in today’s fast-paced educational landscape? In this powerful episode of Aspire to Lead, I’m joined by Michael D. Nelson and Peter DeWitt, authors of Leading With Intention: How School Leaders Can Unlock Deeper Collaboration and Drive Results. Together, we explore how school leaders can move beyond just checking off tasks to reconnecting with their core purpose and fostering meaningful engagement in their work.
We dive into practical strategies for setting personal and professional goals using success criteria, building deeper academic and social-emotional connections within school communities, and overcoming common barriers that hinder intentional leadership. This conversation is packed with insights to help you reignite your passion, strengthen collaboration, and drive impactful change in your school community.
                      About Michael D. Nelson:
Michael Nelson co-facilitates coaching, keynotes, and workshops with Peter DeWitt. He is co-author of the best-selling book, Leading With Intention: How School Leaders Can Unlock Deeper Collaboration and Drive Results (Corwin. 2024) that he wrote with Peter DeWitt.
Michael is the co-host of Corwin's Leaders Coaching Leaders podcast, and the co-author of the Finding Common Ground blog for Education Week. He created the Instructional Leadership Network for the Washington Association of School Administrators. Read more about him here.
There is no more noble profession than that of an educator was what Michael Nelson’s mom said almost every day while he was growing up. For almost 40 years,
Michael has been an educator. His mom would be pleased.
Even though Michael still considers “teacher” as his primary title, he has served in roles of principal, district instructional leader, superintendent, and currently as assistant executive director developing programs and initiatives for superintendents and district leaders in the state of Washington.
One foundational leadership value in which Michael leads is the development of a kind, compassionate, and empathetic culture rooted in belonging and equity. He describes his leadership work as building human connectedness, recognizing you must always model what you lead as you build teams of individuals supporting students in their learning. The Muckleshoot Indian Tribe awarded him with their official blanket for building a collaborative partnership between the Tribe and school district, the highest honor of the Tribe and the first non-Tribal member to receive this blanket.
Michael has received many state and national awards during his time as a principal and superintendent. As a principal, he was acknowledged by Pacific Lutheran University as its Outstanding Recent Alumni in 1997. At the same time, the school he was leading as principal received the National Blue Ribbon Award from the United States Department of Education.
As a superintendent, he was named Washington state’s 2019 Superintendent of the Year. During his tenure as superintendent, Michael was elected President of the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) by his peers.
While WASA President, he was one of two superintendents in the nation selected to participate in the Embark Program facilitated by the United States Navy. He spent time on the USS Ronald Reagan learning from all levels of the men and women serving on this aircraft carrier. He also has received the Washington State Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development Educating the Whole Child Award.

What does it truly mean to emerge as a middle leader? In this episode of Aspire to Lead, Gavin Grift, author of Emerge: Overcoming Common Challenges Associated with Middle Leadership, joins us to reimagine leadership in today’s educational landscape.
We explore the profound concept that "Clarity Precedes Competence," reframing hardships as stepping stones to growth, and the role self-awareness plays in transformative leadership. Gavin unpacks how busyness has become the modern-day "I'm fine" and reveals how leaders can reclaim their time for what truly matters.
Dive into Gavin’s fascinating Leadership Archetypes—the Pleaser, Ostrich, Imposter, Dynamo, and the Judge & Juror—and learn practical ways to recognize and grow beyond these tendencies.
Whether you're navigating the complexities of middle leadership or looking to refine your approach, this episode delivers a fresh perspective and powerful strategies to help you emerge stronger and more focused than ever. Don’t miss this engaging conversation with one of education's most inspiring voices!
                        About Gavin Grift:
Gavin Grift’s career in education began in 1992 as a primary school teacher, where he spent 15 years fostering student agency and empowering students to take ownership of their learning. His innovative practices and dedication to improving teaching led him to roles beyond the classroom, including serving as a cluster educator, where he supported eight schools in developing instructional strategies to enhance student outcomes. This pivotal role marked Gavin’s transition from classroom teaching to educational leadership, focusing on systemic improvements in teaching and learning.
In 2007, Gavin co-authored Assessing the Whole Child with Jane Satchwell, emphasizing student-led portfolios and conferences to empower students in their assessment processes. The book’s success sparked invitations to present their work nationally, leading to partnerships with Hawker Brownlow Education to expand their reach. Around this time, Gavin’s interest in cognitive development deepened after attending a Cognitive Coaching seminar with Thinking Collaborative. This experience shaped his approach to education and leadership, ultimately prompting him to transition into full-time consultancy, working with schools to strengthen teaching practices.
Gavin’s career reached new heights as he became Executive Director of a professional development venture created by Hawker Brownlow Education and Solution Tree. Under the mentorship of Richard and Rebecca DuFour, Gavin helped schools across Australia implement Professional Learning Communities, fostering collaboration and transforming teaching practices. During this period, he co-authored Teachers as Architects of Learning and deepened his international influence as a Cognitive Coaching training associate, supporting educators globally in reflective practices and leadership development. His widely praised books, including Emerge, Transformative Collaboration, Collaborative Teams That Transform Schools, Five Ways of Being, and Collaborative Teams That Work, have further cemented his reputation as a thought leader in education.
In 2018, Gavin founded Grift Education, offering professional learning programs focused on collaboration, leadership, and teacher development. Today, Grift Education continues to grow and evolve, providing resources and programs that help systems and schools achieve the best outcomes for their students. This growth recently culminated in the establishment of Grift Education as a publishing house, further expanding its impact on education. Through Grift Education, Gavin has solidified his reputation as a leading author, consultant, and educational leader, empowering schools to navigate the complexities of modern education while staying true to the values of student agency, teacher reflection, and professional growth.

Leaders face external pressures and internal doubts like “What if I’m not good enough?” or “What if I say the wrong thing and lose credibility?” These challenges can leave even the strongest leaders feeling stuck and unseen.
This is why LaVonna Roth redefines what’s possible for leaders, especially women, who are ready to ditch self-doubt, break through barriers, and step boldly into their shine.

As a self-proclaimed collector of mugs with powerful sayings and an ever-growing love for plants (even if not all of them thrive), LaVonna embraces the leadership journey with warmth, humor, and wisdom gained through a lifetime of lessons (and definitely some mistakes).
Her mission is simple: When we S.H.I.N.E., we create a Firefly Effect that transforms lives, workplaces, and communities.
