          • 209. Changed Instructional Habits: Featuring Kevin J. Butler
This week’s guest, Kevin J. Butler, shares how he lost his passion to teach and how he transformed his teaching style to become more engaging. While teachers don’t train to be entertainers, teaching must capture students’ attention and at times entertain them. This doesn’t mean that every lesson has to be a Broadway musical number, but it does require educators to be intentional when engaging students in active learning. We discuss Kevin’s new book, Lights, Cameras, TEACH!, and how he brings the magic of the movies to the classroom, presenting a scene-by-scene script packed with film-inspired ideas for educators.
            In this episode, we discuss:
            • Community Building Strategies
            • Reigniting your Passions as a Teacher.
            • And his new book, Lights, Cameras, TEACH!

            • About Kevin Butler:
Kevin began teaching in 2002 in New York at a suburban public school on Long Island. He relocated to California to  consult and teach at a startup charter school. For the last six years, Kevin taught fifth grade at an independent school in Los Angeles and was a member of the school's administrative team, serving as K-6  Director of Curriculum and Instruction. Kevin's classroom instruction focuses on creating authentic learning experiences while engaging his students in content-driven instruction. In the spring of 2020, Kevin was a guest on the Kelly Clarkson Show, where Kelly highlighted his dedication to his students during the Covid-19 crisis.  In addition to teaching, Kevin speaks and presents at national educator conferences throughout the United States, including Teach Better, ASCD, and Teach Your Heart Out.  Kevin also enjoys visiting schools and facilitating sessions and workshops on student engagement, classroom culture, and the importance of building relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.  This fall, Kevin is extremely excited to be kicking off his twentieth year teaching sixth grade at a school in the city of West Hollywood.

                      • 208. Helping Parents and Educators with Students who Struggle: Featuring Kyle Hill
This week’s guest, Kyle Hill, shares how his role as a Special Education Lead and parent has uncovered a huge gap in the communication and relationship between the school, parents, and the student. Kyle provides wonderful advice and resources to help all parties succeed in creating an effective plan for our struggling students.
                        In this episode, we discuss:
                        • Strategies to help students with their classroom behavior
                        • Resources for parents to assist their special education meetings
                        • And his podcast, Xhausted Educators!

                        • About Kyle Hill:
School was a struggle for Kyle Hill.  In fact, as someone with undiagnosed ADHD, school was more of a chore than an opportunity.  Due to his own experiences with academic and behavior challenges, Kyle decided to become an elementary, special education teacher to support students with their own unique needs.  He served in this role for 19 years in both co-taught general education classrooms and self contained special education classrooms.  Since then, he has become a district-wide resource lead, specializing in intervention programs, mentoring programs, transition services, and instructional or behavioral support coaching, all in an attempt to assist educators from Pre-K to 12th grade.  His ultimate goal is to provide support and guidance for those who help students who struggle in some capacity.
Kyle’s most important job and passion though, is being a father of 3 children who have their own unique challenges.  Through learning how to support his own children, both he and his wife have learned the importance of working with outside organizations in order to help children and their families.  He packages both of his passions into one organization as the founder of the RechargED Family.  This allows Kyle to provide free content and resources for parents and educators who want to find ways to support kids.  Whether it be through his podcasts like the Xhausted Educators show, the Parents RechargED show or the RechargED Family YouTube channel, Kyle aims to provide content for others so that children and teens get the support that they deserve.  Also a part of the RechargED Family organization is Holding On To Learning LLC.   As the owner, he works with individual families to answer any education or outside service related questions and provide them with resources to help their child who may be struggling in some capacity. You can connect with Kyle on Instagram and Twitter @rechargedfamily or by visiting https://www.rechargedfamily.com/

                                          In this episode, we discuss:
                                          • Setting Fire to the “Comfort Box”
                                          • Showing Vulnerability and Transparency to your Staff
                                          • And his podcast, Unapologetic Leadership

                                          • About Dr. Marcus Belin:
Born and raised on the Southside of Chicago, Dr. Belin learned the value of education at a very young age. That belief has carried him into my career as an educator and my commitment to making an indelible mark on the lives of my students and colleagues.
He attended Bradley University, where he received his bachelor’s in elementary education followed by a master’s in education administration. He completed his doctorate at National Louis University in July 2020.
His career as a 5th- and 6th-grade social studies teacher at Quest Charter Academy, a brand new charter school that was opening its doors in Peoria.  He then became the Dean of Students at the newly opened Quest Charter Academy High School, and after two years was named the school’s assistant principal. As a young administrator, he had the opportunity to help build the culture and structure of a new high school.
Just a few years later he became the assistant principal at Dunlap High School. With much to learn, he quickly became connected to the community and focused his work on creating opportunities for students at Dunlap. Working as part of an administrative team of exceptional leaders, his efforts were focused on building a culture of opportunity, including the formation of an alternative education program for students who were credit-deficient.
In 2018, he became principal at Huntley High School, a large and forward-thinking high school in the far northwest suburbs of Chicago that has built a national reputation as a leader in revolutionizing how students learn. This role has been the biggest and most rewarding experience in his education career so far. His goal is to create and maintain a learning environment that is full of opportunity for all students, an equitable and supportive community, and a place where every student knows they are loved and cared about.
While climbing the ranks of administration. He currently serves as the first black President-elect of the Illinois Principals Association. He has dedicated time to IPA by serving the Central Illinois Valley Region of IPA as a board member,  the membership chair of the Kishwaukee Region, and as Legislative Chair on the State Board. In 2014, he was named one of Peoria’s 40 Leaders Under 40. In 2020, awarded Illinois Principals Association Kishwaukee Region Principal of The Year award. Belin became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. during his time at Bradley.
Dr. Belin has a beautiful wife who is an awesome educator who loves kids and has a passion to help develop her fellow educators. The Belin team consists of three beautiful children, Maliyah, Makenzie, Mekhi.
Belin's drive and passion as a servant leader guide his commitment to the work as an educator and school leader. His ultimate goal is to serve as the United States Secretary of Education.
