  • #ATChatAsks: Zach Turner-As an AT in your role, how do you take care of yourself?

I’ve come to learn and accept that if you are doing something to just check it off a list, maybe it doesn’t need to be on your list.

  • REPLAY: Ep. 116: Dr. Julie Stamm-Concussion Concerns

Dr. Stamm is an athletic trainer, neuroscientist and concussion researcher. She recently wrote a book on how concussions and repetitive impacts can affect the brain of the developing of young children. This is obviously a big deal and it has become even more of a discussion with some of the high profile injuries that have occurred in the NFL.

In this episode we talk about what has been happening with these injuries and a lot of the details around them and what it all means. We discuss the fencing response, second impact syndrome, and the ability for patients to make informed decisions after suffering a traumatic brain injury. Each of these topics is huge and could take an entire episode but we discuss the basics of each to create a baseline for discussion going forward and also highlight the importance of being conservative when managing these injuries.
Please enjoy this conversation with Dr. Stamm.

  • Ep. 162: Katie Lee-Staff Wellness & Burnout. Acrobatics.

Katie Lee is a doctoral student at Baylor University who is focusing her dissertation work on staff wellness, burnout, and caffeine consumption as it relates to a solution. In addition to this important conversation, we also discuss acrobatics, which Katie is working with while going through her program.

Burnout is obviously a big topic in the athletic training profession, rightfully so. Katie helps define burnout and talks about some of the comparisons to other professions that can experience something similar. She notes how it can be a very vicious cycle that impacts both the athletic trainer but how it can also move into patient care. Katie also talks about best practices to help identify and address burnout before it hopefully gets too far.
The discussion on acrobatics is also fascinating as a new sport. Katie defines what it is and how the athletic trainers who work with these athletes continue to work together to figure out best practices to care for this athlete population. A lot of great insight into an emerging sport. Check it out and thank you for listening.

  • REPLAY: Ep. 47: Race in Athletic Training-A Roundtable Discussion

Racism is wrong. Hate can’t be accepted. Just not being “racist” is not enough to propel change. In order to help create change, we have to listen, work to comprehend and accept the fact that those in privileged positions can never understand what diverse people go through.

ATChat hasn’t put a statement out because we needed to listen and learn from people that experience racism on potentially daily basis. We denounce any form or racism or hate, not only within the athletic training community but in the world in general. We will do more to help be part of the change that is needed to increase equality and work with our diverse professionals to succeed and feel safe while doing so.
This roundtable discussion on Race in Athletic Training is a starting point and we can’t think Krystal, Ryan, Mercedes, Andrew, Brandon, Susan, Mike and Austin for being a part of the conversation and education. We held this roundtable to listen, learn, and find opportunities to try and make things better.
#blacklivesmatter, racism and hate are still a problem. We need to do better and look forward to the opportunities to continue the conversation and do our part to make things better.
