How many kids with ADHD does it take to change a lightbulb? We’ve all heard the joke in school, but in the dawn of cancel culture, ADHD’ers remain an evergreen target for inappropriate jokes for some reason. Am I suggesting we try to “cancel” people who yell “Squirrel!” to imply someone has ADHD insensitively? No. But I think I figured out why alopecia isn’t funny and chronic distraction is (shoutout to Will Smith). It’s all about visibility. As a society, if we can’t see it, it’s often not real to us.

With symptoms like depression, low-self esteem, a higher risk of suicide, and more frequent auto accidents, it’s clear that ADHD, for those who live with it, it’s not very funny. ADHD affects about 4% of the population. It’s a neurological difference (neurodivergence) that makes it difficult to sustain focus on specific tasks for extended periods. In 1999, a genetic make-up study was conducted on 2,320 people from 39 different groups at the University of Carolina-Irvine. The Mbuti tribe from Africa, the Hahn Chinese, and the North American Cheyenne natives were just a few. When they studied the migration patterns of their ancestors, they found that the groups with higher amounts of migration had a predominance of what scientists named “the long allele of the dopamine transmitter gene.” It’s a variant of the d4 receptor called 7 R. You don't need to understand all that; the point is scientists now say it’s a definitive precursor for ADHD (neurodivergence).
