FRONTIER TALES WITH ACTION AND ROMANCE

Hearts of the West is a unique collection of classic Western tales that combine action and romance. This anthology showcases nine stirring, long-forgotten frontier tales with appeal to both men and women. So here are nine classic ranchland romances – a unique collection of nine classic frontier stories that combine action and romance.

In "Guardian Angel," a cowboy who doesn't think he needs anyone's help, and a woman who thinks he does, must deal with the treachery and cunning of a criminal family.

In "Frontier Spirit," a well-bred society girl proves she's got that very quality to a doubting cowboy, but not until they have both faced bandit guns.

In "Pioneer Woman" by John and Ward Hawkins (latterly stalwarts of television's Bonanza and Little House on the Prairie), a woman and frontiersman discover that their greatest peril on a wagon train west is not the hardships of the trail but her abusive, murderous husband.

In "Cup of Happiness," a woman determined to succeed on her own in the far northwest and a man keeping a secret, must battle nature, epidemic and claim-jumpers if they are to live and quaff their own cup of happiness.

In "Blue Eyes and Blue Steel," a spirited cowgirl doesn't turn back when she finds herself on the trail of desperado Diamond Jack McLernan, while the man she's after finds himself falling in love with her.

In "The Marquis and Miss Sally," cow camp friendship turns to romance despite a seemingly impossible obstacle in a rollicking tale only the inimitable master of literary surprise, O. Henry, could have penned.

In "The End of the Trail,"a man of mixed parentage learns from a storekeeper's daughter – with the assistance of one of the West's real-life heroines – that it isn't what you do before a fight, but afterward that determines who the winner is.

In "The B-girl, the Battle and the Bar-D," two people who have been deeply scarred by life discover why, if they can survive it, the West is the ideal place for starting over.

In "Big Nose Kate's Man,"the famous, if slightly shady, lady shows why she's earned her own place in frontier legend when her lover, the legendary Doc Holliday, faces a lynching (based on an actual event).

If you enjoy the romance and action of the old frontier days, you'll love Hearts of the West.

WERE THE NEW MEN AND WOMEN HUMAN … OR MONSTER?

Brought back to life via vitaplasm, did they have souls? Or were they somehow less than human, people minus X?

Here's what Amazing Stories had to say about this moving, thoughtful, highly-prophetic novel of the future by three-time Nebula nominee Raymond Z. Gallun: "This is a novel with a cosmic theme that has always been of interest to all people at all times: the process of regeneration and recreation. Through vitaplasm innocent victims of disaster are restored almost to their own selves.... Then humans begin to realize that the artificial people are their superiors in every respect. Mob feeling changes Mitchell Prell, one of vitaplasm's inventors, into a scapegoat and forces him to flee the human community. Ed Dukas, his nephew, and Ed's wife, Barbara, try to use reason to combat the mounting hysteria which threatens to explode into a war of annihilation. When failure seems near, Ed, Barbara and Prell sacrifice their humanity by becoming artificial people in order to function more effectively. ...a suspenseful plot, unusual characterizations, relevant soul-searching on the place of scientific advances in everyday life."

The Detroit Times raved that, "Gallun depicts scientific experiments on the Moon...an explosion that sears Earth...restoring persons through personality records...a struggle between restored people and natural humanity...life on the asteroids...thought reading machines...a journey to Mars...a starship expedition to Sirius... [Dawn of the Demi-Gods] is packed with action scientific style." (Also published as People Minus X, but Dawn of the Demi-Gods is the author's preferred title.)

Raymond Z. Gallun (1911-94) began writing science fiction in 1929, produced his first acknowledged classic, the much-anthologized Old Faithful, in 1934, stopped writing in the 1950s and then returned for a triumphant last decade in the mid-1970s-80s, that would see him nominated three times for the Nebula Award

MURDER, MAYHEM AND INTRIGUE AT THE PLAZA ROYALE!

"A suspenseful, gripping yarn." (The New York Times)

It was just another busy day at the Plaza Royale ― until a pretty hotel manicurist, white with terror, suddenly fled through the lobby and disappeared into the crowded Manhattan streets. Her unexplained flight, and the discovery of some bloodstained pillowslips, gave Gil Vine, the hotel's detective, the tipoff that trouble was brewing. Its source turned out to be the suite of a secretive South American mogul and his entourage including a beautiful señorita, a vicious monkey, a muscular valet, and an elusive character known as Miguel. When Gil investigated, he walked into one of the most explosive situations in his career. For the Latin was really an ousted dictator, loaded with stolen money and jewels, and with a host of assassins pledged to kill him!

The Body in the Bed is one of the most exciting of the classic 1950s Gil Vine mystery novels.

"Plenty of action . . . never fails to be interesting." (San Francisco Chronicle)

Stewart Sterling is credited by leading reviewers with having been one of the originators of the "specialized" or modus operandi school of detective story writers as opposed to the private investigator who has no background in any particular field of criminal activity. His Special Squad stories in Black Mask were the first to make use of inside techniques as used by the Loft Squad, the Bomb and Forgery Squad, the Criminal Identification Bureau, and the Stolen Property Bureau of the New York Police Department. His Fire Marshal Pedley stories were acclaimed by Thomas Brophy, New York City's most celebrated Fire Marshal, as being true to the modern methods employed in the detection of arsonists. His hotel detective tales, with Gil Vine as Chief Security Officer of a swank Fifth Avenue hotel, have been published in many foreign countries - and Sterling received letters from all over the world, with the Oliver Twist request for "more."

MEET A DIFFERENT KIND OF DETECTIVE

Rick O'Shea's intuitive nature and sense of curiosity led him into a career as an investigator. Not a private eye, not that kind of investigator. He's one who is a "seeker" and "finder" of things that have been lost, stolen, or hidden. His methods may be unusual, but he gets the job done when no one else has been able to, and is rewarded with lucrative finder's fees or found treasures for his trouble. Due to his fame and the substantial worth of the items he seeks to recover, Rick's seemingly innocuous livelihood has its share of dangerous situations and harrowing experiences - hazardous encounters with hijackers, kidnappers, thieves, and drug dealers, to name a few.

Good as he is at what he does, Rick would not have been nearly so successful without the Prof and "Q" providing invaluable research and technical backup. In this adventure, lovely aerospace expert Helga Lange and boyhood chum Luther (call me Lute) Martin also join his team and help him solve challenging mysteries in Europe, the Rockies, and Mexico. Of course, romance develops between Rick and Helga, although neither one seems quite ready to fully embrace a commitment.

A SUPERIOR SPACE OPERA FAR AHEAD OF ITS TIME!

From the hallowed pages of Amazing Stories in 1942, here is the first of the adult space operas. Written by the legendary, and highly controversial science fiction editor Raymond A. Palmer, The Vengeance of Martin Brand has never before appeared in any audiobook edition. In this book, Palmer took a giant stride forward from his contemporaries, replacing the noble, uncomplicated heroes of the first space operas, with the tormented anti-hero, "Suicide" Martin Brand, one of science fiction's most memorable characters. The half-crazed Brand, who likes to play classical music while rocketing toward a half-dozen enemy ships, atomic cannons blasting, is Earth's only hope. The embittered former spy for the Interplanetary Patrol is the only one who knows about the Martian spaceships waiting in the hidden cavern on the Moon. It would be easy to make himself the most powerful man in the system and become its master. But, to warn Earth Brand would have to forsake vengeance on the man who betrayed him and cost him everything he held dear, then survive two women, one who has sworn to kill him and one who has sworn to arrest him dead or alive, and if he made it that far, he'd have to fight his way to the surface through ten thousand Martians. But that's why they call him "Suicide" Martin Brand. And even if he does succeed in warning Earth, war will flare across three worlds! From its advanced flashback within a flashback technique, to the adult passions and emotions of the characters, The Vengeance of Martin Brand is superior space opera far ahead of its time!
