Georgia voters are turning out in record numbers as early voting kicks off for the upcoming presidential election. More than 328,000 residents cast their ballots on the first day—more than doubling the previous record of 136,000 set in 2020. Both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are fiercely campaigning for the state's 16 electoral votes, with polls showing it's a tight race.

Democrats typically gain an edge through early voting. But Trump holds a slim lead in Georgia—a state with a critical role in determining the election's outcome. Voters have until Nov. 1 to cast their ballots.

Meanwhile, a Georgia judge blocked an attempt by pro-Trump officials to have a hand count of over 5 million ballots. Judge Robert McBurney said the last-minute change would cause confusion and chaos.

In a major victory for Birmingham's Black communities, the Department of Justice has secured an $8 million settlement from Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation for discriminatory lending practices known as redlining. Fairway also faces a $1.9 million civil penalty. The settlement includes $7 million for affordable loan programs to help Black residents in Birmingham purchase or improve homes and an additional $1 million for community investment.

This is part of the Justice Department's broader Combatting Redlining Initiative, which has now surpassed $150 million in relief for impacted communities nationwide. Attorney General Merrick Garland emphasized that these actions aim to reverse historic discrimination and build wealth through home ownership in Black communities.

Fairway's practices show they directed less than 3 percent of advertising to majority Black areas. The case marks the 15th redlining settlement in three years.

Vice President Kamala Harris is expanding her media reach as the presidential campaign enters its final stretch. On Wednesday, she'll sit down for her first interview with Fox News, speaking with anchor Brett Baier during a visit to Pennsylvania. Threats against Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) workers responding to Hurricane Helene have temporarily halted aid in parts of North Carolina. A man found with a handgun and rifle was apprehended after threatening FEMA staff. He was arrested near a storm relief site and released on a $10,000 bond.

These threats have caused disruptions to relief efforts. FEMA said they are adjusting operations to keep safe while continuing to assist disaster survivors. Currently, over 1,200 FEMA personnel are working in North Carolina, having helped rescue or assist more than 3,200 people.

Last week, FEMA had to launch a rumor control page to counter misinformation. The page aims to clarify rumors, prevent confusion, and keep survivors informed with accurate disaster recovery information.

Some residents report not even applying for assistance because of rumors. FEMA has urged the public to verify information through trusted sources and avoid spreading unverified reports that could hurt or hinder recovery efforts.

On Oct. 14, 1964, Martin Luther King Jr. became the youngest recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize at age 35, recognized for his leadership in the civil rights movement. King’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance guided his efforts to fight for racial equality through peaceful protests, even in the face of violent opposition.

Upon receiving the award, King pledged to donate the $54,123 prize money to support the ongoing fight for civil rights. He remained a prominent advocate for justice until his assassination on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

King’s legacy of nonviolent activism continues to inspire movements for equality around the world.

With just 25 days until the general election, voting rights are under immense strain, particularly in the South, where Hurricanes Helene and Milton have severely disrupted election planning. North Carolina's election board made special accommodations for voters in 13 counties affected by Helene, while in South Carolina, a judge extended the voter registration deadline to Oct. 14.

However, Georgia and Florida saw similar requests denied, sparking concern for those affected by the storms. In other legal news, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a fringe right-wing theory that could have handed state legislators full control over federal elections. Meanwhile, a Georgia judge dismissed a lawsuit challenging the conduct of three MAGA members of the state's election board, although an appeal is expected.

With over 200 election-related lawsuits filed nationwide this cycle, voting access remains a key issue as the country prepares to head to the polls on Nov. 5.
