  • From Apprentice to Abandoned: SCOTUS Halts Midnight Deportation Deadline

A last-minute intervention from Chief Justice John Roberts has paused the midnight deadline that could determine the life or death of Kilmar Garcia – a Maryland man mistakenly deported to one of El Salvador's deadliest prisons.

Garcia, 29, was ripped from his home despite a 2019 court order that barred his removal due to likely persecution. He had no criminal record, was legally working as a sheet metal apprentice, and was married to a U.S. citizen. Still, the Trump administration deported him, labeling it an administrative error, but also accusing him without evidence of being tied to MS-13.

Even the federal appeals court wasn't buying it, calling the government's actions "lawless" and admitting bluntly that the government screwed up. Now, the Trump Justice Department is asking the Supreme Court to let it continue deporting others under an obscure wartime law from the 1700s.

Roberts’ pause gives the high court time to consider whether the lower court went too far in demanding the U.S. get Garcia back. But here's the kicker: the administration claims they can't bring him home because he's no longer in U.S. custody.

  • Trump Tariffs Trigger Panic Monday

It's Panic Monday on Wall Street. The Dow Jones Industrial Average has plunged 1,200 points, the S&P 500 is down nearly 4%, and the Nasdaq composite is deep in the red, adding to the worst financial week since COVID-19 rocked the world in 2020.

The latest sell-off: blame it on President Donald Trump's new round of tariffs. He's digging in on his trade war and the global economy is reeling.

Hong Kong stocks nosedived 13%, the worst day since 1997. In Europe, Germany's DAX dropped more than 10% at the bell and U.S. crude oil prices briefly dipped below $60 a barrel, the lowest since 2021.

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon warns the tariffs will slow down growth and fuel inflation. Goldman Sachs says the fallout may already be irreversible, even if Trump backtracks.

But Trump's not backing down. On Truth Social, he called tariffs "medicine" and blamed past leaders for allowing this to happen.

Markets are shaky, global trust is cracking, and the president is doubling down.

  • Trump-Era Shakeup: 275K Jobs Gone in One Month

(AURN News) — Federal employees continue to face sweeping shakeups under the Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, the Elon Musk-led initiative aimed at overhauling the federal workforce.

U.S.-based employers announced 275,240 job cuts in March, a 209% increase from the same month in 2024, making it the highest monthly total recorded this year, according to a new report from outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

“Job cut announcements were dominated last month by Department of Government Efficiency [DOGE] plans to eliminate positions in the federal government. It would have otherwise been a fairly quiet month for layoffs,” said Andrew Challenger, senior vice president and workplace expert at the firm.

DOGE-led actions over the last two months have been responsible for 280,253 planned layoffs of federal workers and contractors across 27 agencies, the report said.

Challenger called March the third-highest month for job cuts ever recorded, behind only April and May 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“So far this year, employers have announced 497,052 [cuts], the highest year-to-date and quarterly total since Q1 2009,” the firm said.

The government sector accounted for the bulk of the job reductions in March, with 216,215 cuts at the federal level.

Other sectors with significant March layoffs included finance, with 15,982 cuts; technology, with 15,055; and retail, with 11,709.

“‘DOGE Impact’ leads job cut reasons this year with 280,253, 216,670 in March. Market/Economic Conditions followed with 47,851 job cuts attributed to this reason in the first quarter,” the report stated.

President Donald Trump’s administration has leaned heavily on DOGE to drive deep cuts in the federal workforce, with March marking the most significant wave of layoffs so far.

  • NMAAHC Director Kevin Young on Leave Amid Trump Order Targeting Smithsonian

According to The Guardian, Kevin Young, director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), has been on personal leave since March 14.

His absence, first reported by The Washington Post, comes as President Donald Trump targets the Smithsonian with an executive order to eliminate what he calls divisive or anti-American ideology.

Shanita Brackett is now serving as interim director. Though there’s no official link between Young’s leave and the order, the timing has raised questions.

The order specifically criticized the NMAAHC for its portrayal of aspects of white culture. Kevin Young has led the museum since 2021.

  • "Hands Off!" Protests Target Trump in Massive Nationwide Showdown

Fences are going up, and frustration is boiling. The White House has surrounded itself with anti-scaling barricades ahead of Saturday's mass protests against President Donald Trump, expected to be the largest single-day demonstrations since he returned to power.

Organized by handsoff2025.com, the movement has galvanized nearly 250,000 RSVPs across all 50 states with over 1,000 rallies planned in D.C. More than 10,000 demonstrators are expected to flood the National Mall.

The group isn't holding back, accusing Trump, Elon Musk, and their billionaire allies of staging a hostile takeover of government, gutting Social Security, slashing Medicaid, firing federal workers, and handing the country over to the ultra-wealthy.

Even the White House is taking notice — spring garden tours were abruptly rescheduled. The message is clear: protesters are done watching their rights, communities, and paychecks get steamrolled.

  • Musk Out? Trump Said To Be Eying Exit Ramp for the Tech Mogul

Could Elon Musk's government ride be pulling into the station? According to Politico, President Donald Trump has told his inner circle that Musk is set to step back from his full-time role in the administration within weeks, just as his special government employee status, which skirts ethics rules, expires.

And while Trump has nothing but public praise for the billionaire, behind the scenes it's a different tune. Some in Trump's camp are reportedly fed up with Musk's unpredictability, chaotic chain of command style, and unfiltered social media outbursts that have blindsided the White House, like the controversial "five things" email blast to federal workers or Musk's off-the-cuff slam of Social Security on Joe Rogan's podcast, calling it the biggest Ponzi scheme of all time.

The final straw: Musk's deep-pocketed support of a losing conservative judge in Wisconsin—a loss some allies say Musk helped to seal.

  • Your Temu and Shein Orders Just Got Pricier With Tariffs

(AURN News) — If you love shopping on Temu and Shein, get ready to pay more. President Donald Trump's "Liberation Day" tariffs are putting an end to a key tax exemption that has allowed cheap shipments from China to reach your doorstep without extra costs.

A rule called the "de minimis" provision lets Chinese e-commerce companies ship products under $800 directly to U.S. customers without paying customs duties. That’s changing.

"Imported goods sent through means other than the international postal network that are valued at or under $800 and that would otherwise qualify for the de minimis exemption will be subject to all applicable duties, which shall be paid in accordance with applicable entry and payment procedures," the White House said in a fact sheet.

Starting May 2, anything that used to qualify for this exemption will now come with a duty of either 30% of its value or $25 per item. That jumps to $50 per item on June 1.

The executive order makes it clear: "Duty-free de minimis treatment under 19 U.S.C. 1321(a)(2)(C) shall no longer be available for products of the PRC (which include products of Hong Kong) described in section 2(a) of Executive Order 14195, as amended by Executive Order 14228."

This change affects all Chinese goods, whether they arrive through regular shipping methods or the postal system.

"All relevant postal items containing goods that are sent through the international postal network that are valued at or under $800 and that would otherwise qualify for the de minimis exemption are subject to a duty rate of either 30% of their value or $25 per item (increasing to $50 per item after June 1, 2025). This is in lieu of any other duties, including those imposed by prior Orders," according to the White House fact sheet.

So if you've been scoring deals on inexpensive clothes, accessories, and gadgets from China, expect to see higher prices at checkout soon.

  • Trump's Tariff Tsunami Hits Global Trade

"Effective at midnight, we will impose a 25% tariff on all foreign-made automobiles," President Donald Trump said.

Additional tariffs include a 10% baseline on all imports, with steeper rates for key partners: Japan at 24%, South Korea at 25%, the European Union at 20%, and China at 54%.

The president targeted over 60 countries with retaliatory tariffs.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney responded, "We are going to fight these tariffs with countermeasures."

There's even pushback within his own party. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul says, "Tariffs have also led to political decimation, so they're not only bad economically, they're bad politically."

As the president was making the announcement, financial markets reacted and U.S. stock futures plunged. The question remains: Is the president pushing the U.S. into a recession and how much can the people take?
