"U.S. Steel is a historic American company. And it is vital for our nation to maintain strong American steel companies. And I couldn't agree more with President Biden - U.S. Steel should remain American-owned and American-operated."
That was Vice President Kamala Harris campaigning in Pittsburgh on Labor Day in a joint appearance with President Joe Biden. She told the crowd of over 600 people at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local #5 union hall, "I will always have the back of America's steelworkers."
Harris and Biden have strongly opposed the sale of the U.S. Steel Corporation to Japanese company Nippon Steel, a $14.9 billion deal, threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of American steelworkers, with the potential loss of up to 600 jobs at the Granite City Works plant.
Harris and Biden stand firm with American workers, insisting that American steel remains in American hands.

(AURN News) — A recent survey by the Pew Research Center highlights significant differences in how Black Americans engage with and perceive local crime news compared to other racial and ethnic groups. The findings show that Black people not only consume local crime news more frequently but are also more likely to express concerns about its impact on their communities.
According to the survey, Black Americans are more engaged with local crime news than any other racial or ethnic group. They report seeing or hearing about violent crime in their communities more often, a trend that aligns with their general preference for closely following local and neighborhood news according to previous Pew Research Center studies. The other studies also found that the Black community believes that dealing with crime should be a top issue for the President and Congress.
Pew also found that Black people, more often than other races, believe the information coming from the police and local news remains biased and unfair.

(AURN News) — New data released Friday shows that in July, Americans saw a modest uptick in their wallets, according to the latest report from the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA). Personal income increased by $75.1 billion, or 0.3 percent, from the previous month. After taxes, the amount left for spending, known as disposable personal income (DPI), also rose by $54.8 billion, marking a similar 0.3 percent increase. Spending, however, outpaced income gains.
Personal consumption expenditures (PCE)—which include everything from groceries to rent—increased by $103.8 billion, or 0.5 percent. This boost in spending was driven largely by purchases of motor vehicles and parts, as well as everyday essentials like food and beverages. Despite the rise in spending, inflation remained steady.
The PCE price index, a key measure of inflation, inched up by just 0.2 percent in July. Even when volatile food and energy prices are excluded, the PCE price index held at the same 0.2 percent increase. These figures are particularly important for the Federal Reserve as it continues to monitor economic indicators in its ongoing battle against inflation. The steady inflation rate, coupled with rising spending, will likely influence the Fed's decisions on interest rates in the coming months. The slight increase in real purchasing power offers a glimpse of optimism for the economy, which remains an important topic heading into November’s presidential election. The BEA will release its next update on September 27.

(AURN News) — During a press conference following high-level meetings with Chinese officials including President Xi Jinping in Beijing, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan responded to questions about Chinese interest in Vice President Kamala Harris's role in U.S.-China relations. When asked if Chinese officials inquired about what a potential Harris administration might mean for U.S.-China relations, Sullivan declined to describe China's specific questions.
"Every time I meet with Chinese officials, I raise the issue of election interference and laying down a clear marker that it’s unacceptable for any nation to interfere in the U.S. election. And this trip was no different in that regard. I made that point once again. I won’t characterize what the PRC’s questions were with respect to Vice President Harris. They’ll have to speak for themselves on that,” Sullivan stated.
However, he did comment on Harris's involvement in U.S. foreign policy towards China. "Vice President Harris has been a central member of the Biden foreign policy team, a leading member, and has been part of the design and execution of the overall strategy in the Indo-Pacific and with respect to the responsible management of U.S.-China relations," Sullivan said.
He also emphasized that Harris shares President Biden's approach to U.S.-China relations. "What I will say is that Vice President Harris has been a central member of the Biden foreign policy team, a leading member, and has been part of the design and execution of the overall strategy in the Indo-Pacific and with respect to the responsible management of U.S.-China relations,” he said.
“She has had the opportunity to engage herself with President Xi and with Premier Li. So she is known to both of the top leaders in China. And she shares President Biden’s view that responsibly managing this competition, so it doesn’t veer into conflict or confrontation, is essential. And she also shares the view that maintaining high-level, open lines of communication is the way that you can achieve that responsible management," he added.

(AURN News) — The White House has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine's air defense capabilities this week, while stopping short of agreeing to lift restrictions on the use of U.S.-supplied missiles following recent Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
“Ukrainian officials report that this outrageous attack resulted in the deaths of Ukrainian civilians and targeted more than two dozen critical energy sites. I condemn, in the strongest possible terms, Russia’s continued war against Ukraine and its efforts to plunge the Ukrainian people into darkness. Let me be clear: Russia will never succeed in Ukraine, and the spirit of the Ukrainian people will never be broken,” President Joe Biden said Monday in a statement.
National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby condemned the assaults, describing them as "a classic play out of the playbook for Vladimir Putin" aimed at disrupting heat and power supplies as colder weather approaches.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s continued war against Ukraine and its efforts to plunge the Ukrainian people into darkness as the fall here sits upon us and as winter approaches. As the President has said, Russia will never succeed in Ukraine, and the spirit of the Ukrainian people will never be broken,” Kirby told the press. “We’re focused on looking at interceptors and air defense systems, not just from the United States, but from allies and partners," Kirby said.
However, when pressed on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's renewed calls for the West to lift restrictions on missile use, Kirby held firm. “As for our policies with respect to how U.S. weapons are used in Ukraine, I have no changes to those guidelines to speak to today," he stated.
The White House advisor acknowledged Zelenskyy's long-standing desire for expanded capabilities but insisted that such discussions would remain private.
