  • Publicly Democrats Brush Off Calls for Biden To Drop Out of Presidential Race

Over the weekend, House Speaker Hakeem Jeffries dismissed the notion that Democrats want President Joe Biden out of the 2024 presidential race after a lackluster debate last week.

"It was an underwhelming performance on Thursday during the debate, as President Biden and his campaign have acknowledged, it certainly was a setback, but of course, I believe a setback is nothing more than a setup for a comeback," said Jeffries on MSNBC over the weekend.

The Biden family gathered at Camp David to discuss the president's future, and they are said to believe he is the best person to beat Donald Trump.

Congressman Steve Fetterman also weighed in on Fox News Sunday.

"There was that same kind of a freak out after my debate. And in fact, I might even say that I had a more difficult evening than the president did. And here I am right now having this conversation. And I really like to remind everybody watching that right now Biden is one and Trump is still zero. And he's the only person that's ever beaten Trump."

  • Supreme Court Grants Ex-Presidents Limited Immunity from Prosecution in Landmark Ruling

The U.S. Supreme Court, in a landmark 6-3 decision, recognized for the first time that ex-presidents have immunity from prosecution for certain actions taken in office, as it dismissed a lower court's ruling that had denied Donald Trump's attempt to shield himself from criminal charges related to his efforts to reverse his 2020 election defeat.

The court clarified that while former presidents are protected for actions within their constitutional authority, they are not immune for actions taken in a private capacity.

This ruling marks the first instance since the nation's founding in the 18th century that the Supreme Court has declared that former presidents may be immune from criminal charges in specific circumstances.

  • Poll Shows Bad News for Biden After Debate

(AURN NEWS) - President Joe Biden faces an uphill battle following the first presidential debate in Atlanta, as a recent poll indicates a significant shift in voter sentiment toward former President Donald Trump. A CNN poll of registered voters who watched Thursday's debate revealed that 67% believed Trump outperformed Biden, compared to just 33% who favored the incumbent's performance.

When it comes to the partisan divide, the difference was stark, with 96% of Republicans praising Trump's showing, while only 69% of Democrats felt Biden had a strong performance. But despite the perceived debate victory for Trump, 81% of respondents stated that the debate would not sway their voting intentions. However, 14% indicated they might reconsider their choice, with 5% reporting a definite change in their decision.

A pre-debate Gallup poll further compounds the challenges that Biden faces. Trump led in favorability ratings at 46%, compared to Biden's 37%. Among independents, a crucial voting bloc, Trump held an 8-point pre-debate advantage in perceived leadership qualities and personality. Another major problem - age continues to be a significant concern for the Biden campaign, with 67% of those polled by Gallup believing he is too old for the presidency, nearly double the 37% who express similar concerns about Trump.

  • SCOTUS Sleeping Ban Could Affect Over 600K Without Homes

Over 650,000 people in the U.S. are currently homeless, and now the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that cities can enforce bans on homeless people sleeping outdoors, even where shelter space is insufficient.

In a 6-3 decision, the nation's highest court reversed a previous ruling that found such bans were cruel and unusual punishment. The decision affects nine western states, including California, which has a large homeless population.

Supporters of the ruling argue that it's necessary so they can manage public space, while critics contend it criminalizes homelessness and exasperates the crisis.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in her dissent, emphasized that punishing people for their homeless status is unconstitutional.

The ruling comes as homelessness in the U.S. has surged by 12 percent in the past year.

  • Debate Marks Biden Campaign Crisis

(AURN NEWS) - President Joe Biden's underwhelming performance in Thursday night's debate has sent ripples through Democratic circles, potentially reshaping the landscape of the 2024 presidential race and raising questions about the party's strategy moving forward. The debate, which saw Biden struggling with a hoarse voice and at times - meandering responses, highlighted a stark contrast with former President Donald Trump. Will President Biden’s weak showing during Thursday night’s debate shake up the race? That's the big question many Democrats are asking after the debate which wasn’t Biden’s strongest moment in the 2024 election.

A pre-debate poll conducted by Leger and the New York Post revealed a virtual tie between the two candidates, with Biden holding a slim lead of 45% to Trump's 43%. Perhaps more telling, 39% of Americans believed that Trump would ultimately win the election, compared to 32% for Biden. The same survey indicated that 42% of respondents expected Trump to win the debate, while only 29% anticipated a Biden victory.

In response to growing concerns about the President's performance, NBC News reports that the White House has attributed Biden's struggles to a cold. As the Democratic National Convention in Chicago approaches this August, speculation is mounting about the possibility of an open convention. The debate performance and subsequent fallout come at a critical juncture in the campaign, with both candidates seeking to solidify their base while appealing to undecided voters. With only five months to go before Election Day, this is a critical moment for the Biden campaign as they plan their next steps forward.

  • Black Press Excluded From Presidential Debate?

(AURN NEWS) — The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) is calling out CNN for allegedly denying credentials to local Black-owned media outlets for Thursday's presidential debate in Atlanta. In a statement released Thursday, hours before the big event, NABJ expressed concern over reports that Black Press organizations were not granted access to cover the debate on-site.

"We urge CNN to make accommodations for Black-owned media and allow them access to tonight’s debate," the NABJ said.

"CNN is hosting the debate in a place that is commonly called the “Black Mecca” of the U.S. because of the rich and influential Black culture there. It is critical to ensure Black-owned and operated media are present and have prime placement to record, create, and share content for their audiences," they added.

CNN Communications reportedly informed NABJ and other Black organizations that more than 800 journalists from around the world would be covering the debate on-site. While CNN offered access to transcripts and visuals for outlets not approved for credentials, NABJ emphasized the importance of real-time access to news events. The organization acknowledged CNN's offer but maintained that on-site presence holds significant value for media coverage.
