  • Black TV Legend Breaks Silence on Workplace Discrimination in YouTube Series

(AURN News) – In a candid revelation, former legendary WTHR-TV main news anchor Andrea Morehead is sharing her journey as a Black woman in the television industry, shedding light on the challenges she faced during her 21-year tenure at the Indianapolis station. Morehead has launched a new YouTube series titled "My Silence is Not for Sale," where she courageously details instances of gaslighting, hostile treatment, abuse, and more, with the aim of empowering others who may have faced similar experiences.

“I really feel the weight of my traumatic past, finally being overshadowed by my sincere desire to use this form to save others,” she said in the first episode.

“I know there are millions of people who are exhausted, we are tired of being exhausted by toxicity in the workplace. In fact, when it was time to return to the workplace full-time post-COVID, many of us were like, 'No thank you,' because maybe you realize you didn't want to put up with the microaggressions, the gaslighting, the lies, the disparate treatment in the workplace,” she added.

The veteran journalist, renowned for her Emmy and Murrow awards, addresses the weight of her traumatic past in the series' inaugural episode. Amidst the revelations, Morehead reflects on the broader issue of workplace toxicity.

The former news anchor took legal action against WTHR and its owner, Tegna, filing a discrimination lawsuit in 2021. By sharing her story, she underscores and sheds light publicly on the systemic challenges faced by far too many Black professionals in the local television news industry.

Through "My Silence is Not for Sale," Morehead emerges as a powerful advocate for workplace equity, aiming to inspire change and provide a platform for those who have been silenced.

  • Study Reveals Racial Disparities in Alzheimer's Diagnoses and Imaging Access

(AURN News) – Important new research presented at the Annual Meeting of the Radiological Society of North America this week highlights a significant racial disparity in the timing of an Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and access to imaging. The study, led by Dr. Joshua Wibecan, a radiology resident at Boston Medical Center, sheds light on the challenges faced by Black Americans in receiving timely diagnoses for Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.

"If disparity in obtaining access to neuroimaging is one possible barrier that delays diagnosis, it is important to identify this and figure out possible solutions to benefit these patients and prevent a delayed diagnosis," Dr. Wibecan said in a statement.

According to the findings, Black Americans face a higher risk of Alzheimer's and various dementia types. The study shows that the Black community is not only less likely to receive a diagnosis but also experiences delays compared to their white counterparts.

The research revealed striking differences in the age at which imaging services were utilized among various ethnic groups. On average, African American patients underwent imaging at 72.5 years old, compared to 67.8 years old for white patients and 66.5 years old for Hispanic patients. Additionally, the study found that only 50.9% of Black patients underwent MRI scans, while 60% of white patients and 67% of Hispanic patients received the same diagnostic procedure.

  • Is Inflation Easing?

(AURN News) – A report released Thursday from the U.S. Department of Commerce is offering new insight into the state of inflation and the American economy. The data highlights an increase in personal income by over $57 billion in October, coupled with a 0.2% rise in overall spending.

The Federal Reserve, in its ongoing efforts to gauge inflation, places particular emphasis on Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) data. The report underscores progress being made in lowering inflation to the goal target of 2%.

Just weeks ago, the Fed, following a series of interest rate hikes, officially declared that there would be no further increases at the time. The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) is scheduled to meet again on December 12th and 13th, when we’ll find out the Federal Reserve's next decision on interest rates. And while Thursday’s report from the Commerce Department may signal good news in the fight against inflation closer to home, everyday Americans continue to feel a tight economic squeeze, especially at grocery stores where food prices remain high.

  • 36th Anniversary of World AIDS Day: Reflecting on Progress and Ongoing Challenges in HIV/AIDS Fight

Today is World AIDS Day. Every year on December 1, the world unites to observe World AIDS Day — a solemn yet hopeful occasion that serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS and a call to action to support those affected by this global pandemic.

The inception of World AIDS Day traces back to December 1, 1988, making this year its 36th anniversary. Conceived by the World Health Organization (WHO), the day was established to raise awareness, commemorate those who have lost their lives to AIDS-related illnesses, and show solidarity with individuals living with HIV/AIDS.

As we mark this day in the calendar, it's crucial to reflect on the progress made in the fight against HIV/AIDS. However, challenges persist, including disparities in access to healthcare, persistent stigma, and the need for continued advocacy to eradicate the disease.

  • Hero & Villain: Henry Kissinger Dead at 100

Henry Kissinger, a towering figure in American foreign policy and a key architect of U.S. diplomacy during the Cold War, died at his home in Connecticut at the age of 100. Kissinger's death marks the end of an era in international politics, with his legacy characterized by significant achievements and enduring controversies.

Serving under Presidents Nixon and Ford, Kissinger was instrumental in shaping U.S. foreign policy. His tenure as Secretary of State was marked by a series of diplomatic maneuvers that significantly impacted international relations.

A Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Kissinger's most notable accomplishments include brokering the Paris Peace Accords, which effectively ended U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. His approach to diplomacy, often referred to as 'realpolitik,' emphasized practical and pragmatic solutions over ideological commitments, a stance that would shape American foreign policy for decades.

However, Kissinger's legacy is not without controversy. His role in the U.S. bombing campaign in Cambodia and allegations of involvement in human rights abuses have sparked significant debate and criticism. These actions continue to be a subject of contention among historians and political analysts.

Kissinger's death comes at a time when the world is still grappling with many of the geopolitical realities he helped shape. His influence on international relations and U.S. foreign policy will be a subject of study and discussion for years to come.

Kissinger is survived by his family and a legacy that, while celebrated for its achievements, remains complex and polarizing.

  • Ceasefire Extended in Israel-Gaza Conflict; Hostages Released

In a critical development, Israel and Hamas have agreed to extend their ceasefire for a seventh day. The last-minute decision comes as mediators worked hard to free more hostages and get much-needed aid into Gaza.

Since the ceasefire began, there's been a pause in the bombings, allowing some relief to the battered region. The truce continued despite a recent attack in Jerusalem by Hamas militants, which Israel cited as further justification for their tough stance.

Yesterday, Hamas released 16 hostages, while Israel freed 30 Palestinian prisoners. The total count now stands at 97 hostages freed by militants during the truce, 70 Israeli women and children, plus 27 foreign nationals. With fewer women and children left, the focus may shift to Israeli men, including soldiers, for future release.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, currently in Israel, has praised the truce's effectiveness in reuniting families and facilitating aid to Gaza. He has also urged Israel to prioritize the safety of Palestinian civilians.

  • CBC Members Push for Federal Holiday Honoring Rosa Parks

Representative Terri Sewell of Alabama, joined by Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) Chairman Steve Horsford and other CBC members, is urging the passage of the Rosa Parks Day Act to make December 1 a federal holiday commemorating the arrest of Parks.

On December 1, 1955, Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a public bus, sparking the Montgomery bus boycott and galvanizing the civil rights movement.

Here's Rep. Sewell on the potential new holiday:

"By commemorating the arrest of Rosa Parks with a new federal holiday, we will help ensure that her brave sacrifice is never forgotten. Each year, Rosa Parks Day will serve as a reminder of the power of ordinary Americans to achieve extraordinary social change. It will become the first federal holiday in our nation's history to honor a woman and to honor a Black woman."
