What a way to kick off 2023 with a fantastic chat on Sports Legends with Bevo with Sam Powell-Pepper fresh off signing a contract extension at the Port Adelaide Football Club until 2025.
We spoke about how becoming a Dad has changed his life, his footy journey, funny team mates and a common interest in our love of Weet-Bix!
Thanks so much to Sam for his time, to Loukas Founten for arranging the chat and the team at PodBooth for a great job of filming and editing the video!

Imagine you live downstream from a factory that makes widgets. You keep seeing widgets in the river near where you live. Your natural solution to this problem would be to go upstream to the factory, make them aware of the problem, and insist or help them fix it.
We don’t do that with our children. Instead, to solve behavioural issues we often resort to spankings, detentions, timeouts, suspensions, even restraint.
Collaborative & Proactive Solutions is an evidence-based model of psychosocial treatment that doesn’t focus on kids’ challenging behaviours but on the problems causing those behaviours. A solution that goes upstream, not downstream.

Imagine your child still hasn’t cleaned their room although you’ve asked them to numerous times. You probably don’t need to imagine. You remind them again, this time in a stronger tone, perhaps even demanding. And they either don’t or they do but the communication between you is strained.
Another approach to this might be the “Curiosity Approach.” Your child doesn’t care about a clean room, they care that it’s THEIR room. They care about the ownership of it. So imagine interacting with your child on the possibilities they could do with THEIR room. Possibilities they realize for themselves can only happen if they straighten some things up.
The Curiosity Approach is just one of the tools Life Coach Ellie Bambury uses working with parents and their kids to help them forge real communication.

Dr Stanley Greenspan was a specialist in children’s social / emotional health. He proved it’s our social and emotional systems that drive childhood development. Not just our emotional health but also our neurological and physical health. Dr Greenspan went on to create a model to identify what social / emotional health is.
His son Jake became involved as he became older and started his career as a teacher working with children who had developmental challenges. Jake saw that the systems in place to help, weren’t helping at all. Instead, they were built to work around the child’s challenges.
In this episode Jake explains that with a better understanding of neuroplasticity we now understand that we don’t need to “work around” the challenges children have – they can genuinely take on those challenges and overcome them.

Kristalle Dumesny was 18 years old when her car collided with a truck after the 2017 Easter long weekend. Kristalle received fatal injuries and sadly died at the scene. She was driving home from her family’s holiday home when she failed to give way to a heavy vehicle at the intersection of the Augusta Highway and Copper Coast Highway, Port Augusta. Her father Steve Dumesny saw the crash site on a media report and knew that it was his daughter’s vehicle. He then phoned his good mate Superintendent Scott Denny who was the Office in Charge of the Local Service Area where the crash occurred asking him if his worst fear was true.
The truck drive, Troy Oakes was not injured in the crash but on his way home from the scene with his boss Jayne Mills, he was injured in a second crash when an insecure load fell off a truck and crashed through Jayne’s window causing her vehicle to roll.

Much maligned are New Year’s resolutions. But that overall idea of setting time aside to plot life goals, specifically goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely, is a good one.
In this episode Kate and guest Tracy Noon talk through the ideas of goal setting at year-end, and how that concept may or may not work for specific personalities.

Pretty amazing way to sign off our year with Socceroo and World Cup Star, Mat Leckie. An incredible World Cup campaign which was led with some of Leckie's brilliance and of course the important goal against Denmark which sent the Socceroos into the knockout stages which we talk through. Lecks is now back in Aus and ready to soar with Melbourne City as we discuss his career to date, his return to the A-League and the recent crazy Melbourne Derby. An episode filled with so much all soccer and sporting fans will love! We hope you enjoy the show and please don't forget to leave us a review and subscribe to the show :) xx
