We chat to Sean from Future Magic Brewing, one of the latest new craft breweries to enter the Queensland scene. We discuss the effort that goes into starting a new brewery, and get Sean's thoughts on crowd funding and whether it's proved worthwhile.

You might have seen the kegs hanging around various breweries being used as door stops, chairs or tables, but there's a lot that goes into running a keg business for the craft beer industry. Adsy first met Ben like many people these days meet their partners, over the internet. Mutual Instagram followers led to a few conversations and eventually a catch up to drink some beers in person. It was during this first catch up that Adsy heard about Ben's exciting plan to go professional, touting his landlord's love of the home brew he was making in their garage.

Hound & Stag has been open since late December of 2022 and has already made a stack of good mates with beers pouring from the taps every day. The venue itself features a massive cold room, abundant seating, 2 custom VIP rooms (one with it's on beer taps and bartender), a stage for musical acts to perform, excellent outdoor space and even more to come! If you're on the Gold Coast, you would have heard of this brewery by now, having been featured in many publications and media appearances.

It was never going to be long before Adsy sat down to chat to Reece from 4 Hearts Brewing. Reece and Adsy have known each other for almost 4 years, with Adsy being present for some of Reece’s first recipes and brewing experiences. This chat was always going to be fun, but it was also good to see Reece on a professional level, having attained the Head Brewer role in a relatively short amount of time in this industry. 

4 Hearts Brewing has been around since 2013 and grew from a couple of craft beer nuts who wanted somewhere where they could drink those beers. They decided to started microbrewery, and Wade Curtis who was a local amateur brewer at the time had 4 Hearts Brewing as his own small brand. They signed a deal to start at The Pumpyard and have Wade as Head Brewer.

After some time Wade left to go back to his love of Marketing and a man called Ken Friend, who was a classically German trained brewer took over the role. Reece was his assistant, having come from learning brewing from none other than Charlie from Helios, and then Reece became the main man. Reece now has the opportunity to stamp his own mark on the brewery and the beers. He loves his beers, he loves his brewing, but he doesn’t really love chatting but we made him talk to Adsy anyway.

In this episode, Adsy sits down to chat to Amberlyn from Craftapped Australia, the brand new social beer app that’s landed on our shores. Currently available to use in both New South Wales, and recently released in December 2022 in Queensland, it’s an exciting app that gets you out and about drinking beers in your local area. On our first ever episode, Adsy chats with one of Australia's most experienced brewers, and good mate, Charlie Hodgson. 

At the time of the interview, Charlie was just finishing up as head brewer at Helios Brewing Company in Brisbane. He has since moved on to the head brewer role at Woolgooga Brewing Company, not far from Coffs Harbour in NSW.  

Adsy also runs through some different types of kegs...a key part of getting beer into your glass and to your lips!
