Gruner Veltliner, Zweigelt and Blaufrankish…these are 3 of the grapes grown in Austrian wine country. If you haven’t tried them yet you need to! This week Klaus Wittauer of KW Selections joins Laurie to talk about the delicious and food friendly wines coming from Austria and why they are such a great value. Wines we tasted on the show: Tegernseerhof T26 Gruner Veltliner 2013, Federspiel, Wachau, Austria $17  Winemaker’s Notes: Sandy and gravel soils form the complex and classic Grüner Veltliner. The reserve substances stored in the old wood are reflected in the subtle minerality of the wine – weather conditions are responsible for fine and elegant fruit flavours. All that merges the FRAUENWEINGARTEN GRÜNER VELTLINER into a complex, delicious and balanced wine. Anton Bauer Zweigelt   2011, Feuersbrunn, Wagram, Austria $14  Winemaker’s Notes: Shining ruby with shimmering crimson; in the nose cherry fruit with berry undertones, fine aroma; on the palate multi-layered – a vegetable touch joins the young berry fruit to add additional fine spice: ripe, with extract sweetness coated tannin; tones of Mon Cheri and chocolate finish the expressive range of flavors. Hillinger Leithaberg Blaufrankisch 2011, Burgenland, Austria $35 Winemaker’s Notes: Blaufränkisch Leithaberg DAC presents a dark Rubin red and a black core. Ripe cherry, blackberry, graphite, licorice and spicy notes. Fresh cherry-fruits on the plate, tight structure. A Wine with elegant tannin, and good acidity. Dark berries and spicy finish.
