  • Episode 190: Fr. Lawrence Tucker, SOLT, on his new song The Father's Lullaby (August 10, 2022)
    In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Fr. Lawrence Tucker, SOLT, on his new song The Father's Lullaby (August 10, 2022)

    In 1984, Cardinal Ratzinger reminded us that The Document of Puebla by John Paul ll pointed out that the preferential option for the poor is two-fold: for the poor... and for the young. Unfortunately, the "for the young" part has been almost universally ignored. The Father's Lullaby was written in response to the anxiety, stress, and spiritual turmoil young people have been suffering for the past three years due to the pandemic. The song, however, is not "age specific" and could be helpful for any person, regardless of their age, who needs a little help settling down before resting.

    In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Dr. Gerard Verschuuren on his book Faith That Makes You Think

    Doesn’t faith contradict thinking? Actually, no. The Catholic Church teaches that there is a strong relationship between faith and reason. In fact, it’s a characteristic of us rational creatures to practice a faith that seeks understanding. This book is specifically written for Catholics—fallen-away Catholics, lukewarm Catholics, struggling Catholics, would-be Catholics—for all those in search of the truth, as it gives life-saving answers to life-size questions.

  • Episode 188: Deanna Bartalini on Invite the Holy Spirit into Your Life (August 3, 2022)
    In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Deanna Bartalini on her bible study entitled Invite the Holy Spirit into Your Life: Growing in Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self-Control (Our Sunday Visitor, 2018).

    In Invite the Holy Spirit into Your Life, you will:

    learn how the Holy Spirit can change your life through the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control;

    explore the fruits of the Spirit through real-life stories, examples from the Old and New Testaments, and the wisdom of the Church;

    examine how you are cultivating the fruits of the Spirit in your own life.

    “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control,” St. Paul wrote to the Galatians. “If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit” (Galatians 5:22–23, 25). Those words are just as relevant and powerful for you today as they were for the Galatians. In Invite the Holy Spirit into Your Life, Deanna G. Bartalini draws on her own story, sacred Scripture, the lives of the saints, and the wisdom of the Church to explore how to grow in each of the fruits of the Spirit. You can record your own insights right in the journal, then bring those thoughts to your small faith-sharing group for further discussion. • Episode 187: Kevin Gary on Why Boredom Matters (August 1, 2022)
    In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Kevin Gary on his book Why Boredom Matters: Education, Leisure, and the Quest for a Meaningful Life (August 1, 2022)

    Boredom is an enduring problem. In response, schools often do one or both of the following: first, they endorse what novelist Walker Percy describes as a 'boredom avoidance scheme,' adopting new initiative after new initiative in the hope that boredom can be outrun altogether, or second, they compel students to accept boring situations as an inevitable part of life. Both strategies avoid serious reflection on this universal and troubling state of mind. In this book, Gary argues that schools should educate students on how to engage with boredom productively. Rather than being conditioned to avoid or blame boredom on something or someone else, students need to be given tools for dealing with their boredom. These tools provide them with internal resources that equip them to find worthwhile activities and practices to transform boredom into a more productive state of mind. This book addresses the ways students might gain these skills.

  • Episode 186: David Hajduk on Healing the Culture and the Family (July 25, 2022)
    In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson talks with David Hajduk on his book Healing the Culture and the Family.

    It is evident that the culture and the family need healing, but before we can offer a cure, we need to know the spiritual disease ailing us. Pope John Paul II offers a diagnosis in his Letter to Families: the human family is experiencing a “New Manichaeism,” a variant of an ancient heresy, that was released with the philosophical revolution of the 17th century philosopher René Descartes and has reached pandemic levels today. This New Manichaeism has deteriorated our understanding of ourselves, the world, and how we ought to live, and borne radical consequences especially in the areas of bioethics and sexual ethics. John Paul II believed the remedy was an “adequate anthropology” — an “integral vision of man” that includes the body within the structural whole of the person’s life and activity. This is what he offers in his popularly known Theology of the Body. In this book, Dr. David Hajduk details Pope John Paul II’s diagnosis and remedy, explaining how Descartes and the philosophical tradition that followed are at the source of the current crisis in the culture and the family. Dr. Hajduk demonstrates how all the symptoms point to a rejection of the philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, as well as how they bear a striking resemblance to the heretical ideas that throughout Christian history have typically been labeled as “Manichaean.” Finally, he presents John Paul II’s anthropology, particularly as expressed in his oft-misunderstood Theology of the Body, as a corrective especially suited to lead contemporary men and women to the truth about themselves and God’s plan for human love, as well as marking a return to the perennial philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, which John Paul II himself declared as the only way to get past the Cartesian watershed.

  • Episode 184: Shannon Sánchez on Xeno, Estro, Andro, Testo, WHAT?! (July 21, 2022)
    In this episode of Author to Author, Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Shannon Sánchez on her book Xeno, Estro, Andro, Testo, WHAT?!: My journey with PCOS and how I conquered the disease (July 21, 2022)

    Hormones are so confusing, especially for women who suffer from reproductive illnesses like PCOS. In Xeno, Estro, Andro, Testo, WHAT?!, author Shannon Sánchez describes her young and adult life living with PCOS, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, and how the Creighton Model FertilityCare System, Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN), and lifestyle alterations have helped her overcome this common autoimmune disease. If she can do it, you can do it too! If you or someone you know suffers from reproductive illnesses, or if you are a doctor who wishes to better understand your patients, this quick, easy-to-read book is for you!

    Cervical mucus texture was definitely never a topic discussed in high school or college science classes. But understanding it has taught me so much about my body -- physically, mentally, and emotionally. And who would have thought that taking the tiniest sliver of a Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) pill at night would help with menstrual, sleep, allergy, and sinus problems that have plagued me for decades?! Lifestyle tweaks like intermittent fasting to help with insulin resistance, diet, exercise, relaxation (getting my cortisol hormone under control), and taking the right supplements have also been monumental for me. Twenty-five years into getting my period and I finally have my body figured out!

    I'm a married, working mom of four little kids, so I get the lifestyle struggles that too many women have today -- balancing marriage, motherhood, laundry, cleaning, cooking, and careers. It's no wonder our hormones are out of whack! I have three daughters who will be nearing puberty in the coming years, so there are key things I do in my parenting to help my daughters avoid, if possible, developing PCOS or other reproductive illnesses -- all of that in chapter six.

    If sharing my story can help even just one girl avoid menstruation and hormonal struggles, to some degree, writing this book is well worth it to me! Just beware of TMI at times!

  • Episode 182: Fr. Paul Ezinando on Jesus Christ: A Man of Prayer (July11, 2022)
    In this episode of Author to Author, Dr. Cynthia Toolin-Wilson interviews Fr. Paul Ezinando on his book Jesus Christ: A Man of Prayer (July11, 2022)

    In this work, Fr. Paul Ezinando demonstrates that though we have knowledge of Jesus Christ from various perspectives, we cannot know Him enough. To help us come to a better knowledge of Jesus Christ, Fr Ezinando examines Him (Jesus) as a man of prayer in the light of St. Luke’s gospel, looking briefly at the concept of prayer from a historical perspective, analyzing certain moments of prayer in the life of Jesus – His baptism, withdrawal, choice of the apostles, transfiguration, institution of the lord’s prayer and passion – and reflecting on the significance these times of prayer for us.
