  • Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist & Author Dave Barry
Authors on the Air host Pam Stack welcomes Pulitzer prize winning columnist and author Dave Barry. Dave has been a professional humorist ever since he discovered that professional humor was a lot easier than working. For many years he wrote a newspaper column that appeared in more than 500 newspapers and generated thousands of letters from readers who thought he should be fired. Despite this, Barry won the Pulitzer Prize for commentary, although he misplaced it for several years, which is why his wife now keeps it in a secure location that he does not know about. One of Barry's columns was largely responsible for the movement to observe International Talk Like a Pirate Day every year on September 19. This is probably his most enduring achievement.
Barry has written more than 30 books, including the novels Big Trouble, Lunatics, Tricky Business and, most recently, Insane City. He has also written a number of books with titles like I'll Mature When I'm Dead, which are technically classified as nonfiction, although they contain numerous lies. Two of Barry's books were the basis for the CBS sitcom Dave's World, which can probably still be seen on cable TV in certain underdeveloped nations.

  • Criminal Mischief: Episode #16: Arsenic: An Historical and Modern Poison
Toxicology is a relatively new science that stands on the shoulders of its predecessors: anatomy, physiology, chemistry, and medicine. Our knowledge in these sciences had to reach a certain level of sophistication before toxicology could become a reality. It slowly evolved over more than two hundred years of testing, starting with tests for arsenic.
Arsenic had been a common poison for centuries, but there was no way to prove that arsenic was the culprit in a suspicious death. Scientist had to isolate and then identify arsenic trioxide—the most common toxic form of arsenic— in the human body before arsenic poisoning became a provable cause of death. The steps that led to a reliable test for arsenic are indicative of how many toxicological procedures developed.

  • Wine Women & Writing: Mack Little & PROGENIE with Pamela Fagan Hutchins
Zenobia Grant – Doctor, daughter, lover, warrior. And not quite human.
Zen has been trained from birth to defend herself against a terrible threat. And to be careful to not injure the fragile humans that surround her. She uses her skills to heal, not harm, and to keep the questions that haunt her at bay.
Zen doesn’t know what she really is or what happened to her mother. But the answers will put her in the crosshairs of some of the most powerful and malevolent beings in existence. Djinn, dhampyrs, and vampires all stalk Zen for their own reasons.
Visions inspired by an ancient book lead her to discoveries. Not only of who and what she is, but it identifies the creatures who attack her and her family. What it doesn’t tell her is how to defeat them before any more loved ones are destroyed.
Set against the rich tapestries of the ancient world and present day, Progenie is an epic journey of self-discovery, love, and betrayal.
Mack Little is full of wanderlust. And what better way to find inspiration than visiting as many locations in her series as she can.
Born in Conyers, GA, Mack lived in Seville, Spain while a student. As a soldier, she was stationed in Wurzburg, Germany. Her studies and career have taken her all over the United States, and she has taken jaunts across the pond.
Mack is currently on the Board of Directors for the Houston Writer's Guild. Progenie is her first novel, and she co-authored Disaster Planning: A How-to-Do-It Manual, published by Neal Schuman. She has also authored several articles for professional library journals.
Mack holds an undergraduate degree in English Literature as well as a Masters of Information Science.
She now resides in Houston, Texas with her husband and a playful papillon.
