Authors on the Air host Pam Stack welcomes the incomparable James W. Hall to the studio for a chat about his books, characters and what he's up to now!   Here's a little bit about Jim.    James W. Hall was born in Kentucky, and graduated from Florida Presbyterian College with a B.A. in literature, and a deep love of Florida. He went on to earn an M.A. from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. from the University of Utah, then returned to Florida to teach literature and creative writing at Florida International University for the next 36 years. During that time he published four books of poetry, a collection of short stories, a book of essays, and seventeen novels--most of which feature an enigmatic loner named Thorn. Hall was a Fulbright professor in Spain and is the winner of both the Edgar Award and the Shamus.

We'll be discussing Mr. Hall's just released book "Going Dark" and one  lucky listener will win a signed hard cover along with a bonus book.

I‘m a native Brit, currently living in Southern California. I’m an author of mysteries and thrillers, with three published novels, all set in one of my favorite cities: San Francisco. The city is so diverse and it’s so easy for a killer to move around, which makes it the perfect location for a mystery.

When I’m not busy writing, I’ll be off somewhere reading, doing a crossword (I can’t resist a puzzle), or people watching and plotting my next murder.

As you can tell from the title, my goal is to integrate physical and emotional protection in the way that we integrate our body, mind, and spirit when we think of holistic health. Thoughts, words, and actions are instrumental to our overall well-being, but they are also essential to our sense of emotional empowerment and tangible physical protection. Unfortunately, most people—including authors and teachers—separate the emotional and the physical into two distinct and barely relatable camps. We can easily find books to help us with grief, addiction, insecurity, relationships, and business; or show us how to beat the stuffing out of an attacker and escape physical violence; however, none of them make any attempt to integrate all of these human challenges into a unified set of concepts and strategies. It is not their purpose, but it is mine. A note from Peg:  When I was almost finished writing the first draft of THE MISSINGS, a character came into the story. I only intended him for a very small role. Instead, he threatened to derail the entire story and take it over. He was that strong, and I was that close to finishing. It was a battle. I promised him his own book if he would just back off. He did, and Mex Anderson got to play a much bigger role in THE SACRIFICE.  Beginning with my second book, I've tried to lightly touch on a social issue. My hope is that it could bring about some discussion, maybe even shed a little different perspective. With THE MISSINGS, it was illegal immigration and organ donation. With THE SACRIFICE, it's living with depression.

In 2011 he suffered an injury that limited his vision, making practicing law and writing difficult.  That did not stop him however, and using his computer he has written and illustrated three children's books:  There's an Elephant Following Me, ABCs of the Universe,and Santa's Home.  He has also written a modern re-telling of Little Red Riding Hoodie and Goldilocks and the Three Bears.  Steve also illustrated and co-wrote My Secret Superpower!" with the Honorable Natacha Seijas, a book about bullying.   Here is what Steve has to say:   I never really liked the messages in classic fairy tales.  My books have the characters exploring more modern virtues and dilemmas like greed, compassion, forgiveness and love.  Natacha Seijas and I co-wrote a book about bullying when she saw that there were no good books aimed at the K-3 audience.

Terry Ambrose started out skip tracing and collecting money from deadbeats and quickly learned that liars come from all walks of life. He never actually stole a car, but sometimes hired big guys with tow trucks and a penchant for working in the dark to "help" when negotiations failed.

A resident of Southern California, he loves spending time in Hawaii, especially on the Garden Island of Kauai, where he invents lies for others to read. Here is a little bit about David Rich:  David Rich has sold screenplays to most of the major studios, and to production companies in the U.S. and Europe.  He wrote the feature film, Renegades, starring Kiefer Sutherland and Lou Diamond Philips, as well as episodes of MacGyver and other shows.  He wrote three plays: The Interview, The Rescue, and W.A.R. (Women's Armed Resistance). Forsaking Los Angeles for small town Connecticut, David turned his attention to fiction.  Caravan of Thieves is the result.  Raised in Chicago, David received his B.A. from Tulane,and earned his M.A. in English from University of Colorado.

Carly  is a lapsed lawyer who says she "didn't enjoy herself".  She's written over 45 books and "Dare to Love"  is Carly's first self published book.  "I made the decision to self-publish my next series for one primary reason: YOU, my readers. The success of self-publishing has obviously made a huge impact on the industry, and many of my readers have reached out to me personally, encouraging me to make some changes". Our interview was punctuated by laughter and some serious talk about the difficulties of becoming a published author. Carly shared advice to those aspiring writers and said that her thoughts throughout the years have changed.  She recommends that you sit down and just write. Push through the blanks, and when you're done, hire an editor, proofer, and book jacket designer. Don't skimp.  It's a competitive market and you want your product to be the best it can be. Of course 4 lucky callers received signed copies of "Dare to Love".
