  • Avenue Red Podcast #034 - MA.XIM
For the 34th Avenue Red Podcast we present Maxim Sukhanov AKA MA.XIM from Rostov-on-Don in South-West Russia. Like many other DJ's on the Avenue Red series, we discovered Maxim simply through his Soundcloud page after he released 2 mixes (currently not available) a couple of years ago and were really taken by his uber-deep, very dark style of dub-infused House & Techno music and were blown away by his slick and charismatic DJ'ing style. This new mix follows the same kind of path as what we first heard.
Maxim has toured across various cities of Russia and CIS countries and co-founded a party and music movement in his hometown of Rostov called HOT-BOX, where he has been the steady-handed resident DJ since it's inception hosting a wide plethora of international guests including Jody Wisternoff, Echonomist, Lola Palmer and Neil Quigley to name a few. He also hosts 2 radio shows on his local station - 161.FM Rostov-on-Don - where he regularly invites guests from the underground music scene across Russia to participate. We really dig his vibe and music choices and the way he ties it all together like only a true DJ knows how to. Enjoy the mix everyone, links to his music pages below!

  • Avenue Red Podcast #033.3̅ - Mark Nicholas O.
This is Avenue Red Podcast 033.3¯, precisely 3 hours, 33 minutes, 33 seconds, 333 milliseconds of wild music from the Ringrose Records boss Mark Nicholas O. Mark played at an Avenue Red event at The Tanners up here in Newcastle, England just before the turn of the New Year and has kindly provided us with this mix to follow up, injecting something very different to our series.
This epic 3½ hour session of music showcases a number Mark's own productions, woven into a fabric of lively roots House, nice Garage, weird Garage and all manner of miscellaneous abstract electronic music presented in Mark's trademark style with irregular pacing - sometimes disjointed - but always exciting on the ear and distinctly danceable. Every crease of warm distortion is intentional and part of the sound design that Mark has developed. There's a lot to take in here... It takes some commitment but it's worth it as there are some truly golden moments contained within - stay with it and please do comment, like and share it far and wide!

  • Avenue Red 1210 Mk6 - Steve S
For the 6th installment of the Avenue Red 1210 series, we present a stunning mix from Stephen Sherdel AKA "Steve S", who delivered us a solid selection of deep, dubby 90's Techno and Tech House sounds.
"From my lifetime's base here in sunny Stevenage in Hertfordshire, England I have been listening, buying, DJ'ing and clubbing since the mid-90's. My musical tastes have varied from Hardcore to Techno to House and now a combination of them all. With influences ranging from artists/deejays like Andrew Weatherall, Laurent Garnier, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin & Derrick Carter, I hope to think that my style and musical choices incorporate the best of them all and my mixes take you on a trip from nothing to something!
As of February 2015 I've been let loose on Timeline-Music.net (every last Tuesday of the month) and Househeadsradio.com where you can catch me spinning regularly. I heard about Avenue Red through my good friend Andy Green (AKA Verdant Recordings, who did the 4th episode in this series) and thought that the 1210 series (12 records 10+ years old) is a great concept and decided I had plenty of vinyl within that criteria to produce a quality hours blend... hope you enjoy the selection I came up with!" • Avenue Red Podcast #031 - Jonna (City Fly)
For the 31st Avenue Red Podcast we present Jon Iliffe, better known simply as "Jonna", the man behind the long-running Leicester-based club night, radio show and record label, City Fly. Alec from Avenue Red went to University in Leicester and was a regular attendee at the early City Fly parties that began in 2004 and became noticed immediately with solid bookings (including Phil Weeks from Robsoul Recordings, Paris) coming to hit the City of Leicester hard with a heavy dosage of high quality house music.
Fast forward over 10 years of consistent hard work... Jonna, along with cohorts Dale Tonks and Ashley Stevenson have put an enormous amount of energy into the artistic direction of their promotions and created a uniquely holistic brand identity for their music. They have managed to remotely run successful events in London (100 miles from Leicester) at venues like Basing House and Bar 54 and have ruddered City Fly into becoming a proper record label, pressing vinyl and hosting music from renowned House music artists including Andrés, Flori, DJ Nature, Fred P, Red Rack'Em, Iron Curtis and Leif to name a few... City Fly is a name that puts Leicester on the underground music map and a label to watch out for.
In this exclusive 1-hour session, Jonna takes us on a journey through what's been happening in his box over the last year with every track in the mix being from 2014. We have been listening to this mix on heavy repeat over the last couple of weeks and can testify that it's about as addictive as Crystal Meth mixed with Krokodil. This is true house music - City Fly style!
"I've not been very prolific with my output of mixes over the past year so I decided to go in full-wack with the kind of set that I play at my club event City Fly, which is based in Leicester. Ruff beats & basslines with plenty of groove & soul. Hope you enjoy!" Jonna Iliffe, January 2015

  • Avenue Red 1210 Mk5 - Red D
Next up in Avenue Red 1210 series, where 12 records are played that are 10+ years old, we have Red D AKA Bart Van Neste from Gent, Belgium. Also known as FCL in allegiance with fellow Belgian DJ/producer San Soda, Bart is the owner of We Play House Records and did the 5th episode of the main Avenue Red Podcast series.
"Here I present 12 x 12”, all older than 10 years. I took a while to curate this set of records - I finally decided on making a mix of Belgian club classics from the early-to-mid 90's when there were not forests of sub-genres and Trance was not yet a dirty word!
So what you're getting is the raw sound of the Belgian underground clubs around 94/95, very much what inspired me to take up DJ'ing more seriously..." Bart Van Neste, January 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #030 - Kammerton
It's New Year's Eve 2014 and we have just managed to get to our 30th episode thanks to the handy-work of Kammerton (real name Stepan Chernov), a diverse musical talent who hails from the Russian city of Ulyanovsk, located on the Volga River 900 kilometres east of Moscow. Now living in Moscow, Stepan is an accomplished pianist, kapellmeister (chapel master/director of a choir), electronic music producer, DJ, sound engineer, sound designer for films & cartoons and he also runs the video podcast www.friendly-vibes.com, which is as he puts it: "for all lovers of warm groove and high spirits".
Stepan has played at many clubs across central Russia and has held residencies at Moscow clubs Shanti and Propaganda and also on RTS.FM Moscow. He first caught our interest with his slick production work, most notably the amazing Take Me For Granted EP from 2012 that was released on Housewax, from which the track "A Rising Tide Lifts All Boats" was played on Avenue Red Radio show 004: https://soundcloud.com/avenue-red/radio-show-004. This mix is a mega deep, dark and groovy session of mysterious House and Techno, with lots of new music featured. Crank it on at high volume for your NYE celebrations, and be sure to download a copy... you may find that this mix really grows on you!
"This mix is written spontaneously, one Sunday evening. I felt the need to unwind and leave the house. Quickly gathering my DJ bag, I went to a nice friendly bar in my home town of Ulyanovsk where I could play at any time. The venue did not want anything too active and energetic, the more so because it was Sunday, so I played deep and groovy styles. In recent times, I have found that I absolutely do not want to drink alcohol and I have been getting into different tea drinks, such as oolong. It gets me into an amazing deep meditative state and it helps me to really swing it in the mix." Stepan Chernov, December 2014

  • Avenue Red 1210 Mk4 - Verdant Recordings
It has been 8 months since we released Dieter Mit Platten's excellent trainspotters selection for the Avenue Red 1210 series, where 12 records are played that are 10+ years old. Now we can update this sister series playlist with a new selection of 12 choice gems from Andy Green AKA Verdant Recordings, who is based in Hitchin, England.
"I have been listening to the Avenue Red series for a while and when I spotted the invite to put together a digger's selection it piqued my interest. Frankly, I'm a bit of a junkie for new music and having skipped most of the late 90's for "serious" record collecting this was a good challenge to accept. By default I’m a Deep Techno head but have mellowed into house and more so Dub Techno in recent years, so these selections sit somewhere in that space. The Hexagon is a good example; I bought that on release for the acidic Burning Trash Floor and ignored the B's until much later and much prefer those now.
I picked out Daniel Bell's Elevate too since he's partly responsible for developing my taste in recent years. I heard several sets by various DJs within a few months of each other (his at Bloc about 5 years ago) that really made me feel House music in a different way. A gem from John Harvey too, a wonderful producer of emotive deep music which leads onto Delsin; I challenge anyone to find a mediocre release from Marsel. Artemis is my favourite and it blends beautifully with UR's Transitions... but that would have made it 13! Enjoy!" Andy "Verdant Recordings" Green, December 2014

  • Avenue Red Podcast #029 - Jori Hulkkonen
Avenue Red Podcast 029 is an exclusive mix by Jori Hulkkonen, recorded live at a recent event called "My House Is Your House" at a venue called Portti, playing a vinyl-only set at a rare appearance in his hometown of Turku in Finland. Originally hailing from the rather remote Northern town of Kemi in the Lapland region (a place from which The Northern Lights can be seen on 100 days per year), Jori has consistently been a truly inspired innovator throughout a productive music career spanning over two decades, rendering a rich and eclectic discography of releases including a dozen full studio albums, dozens of singles and remix projects counting into the 200's.
A mainstay artist on Eric Morand & Laurent Garnier's (sadly now defunct) F Communications label, Jori's musical output has bled into many different genres and styles, mostly ranging from House to Techno and Electro to Ambient. He has done some conceptual artistic work too, having assembled the Acid Symphony Orchestra in 2007 - an experimental, avant-garde, 11-man techno ensemble featuring ten Roland TB-303's - performing a raw score all written, conducted and mixed by Jori.
As a DJ, Jori has played all over the world and played at hundreds of clubs and festivals throughout the years since the early 90's. His luscious style of high quality, melodic, groovin' House music was brilliantly captured on his famed Radio One Essential Mix from 2002 (https://soundcloud.com/blanche/jori-hulkkonen-essential-mix-2002-02-03) and this mix for our series has distinct echoes of that brilliant session and that era of House music in general. Hope you're ready to hear some classic and obscure House gems woven in true style by a master of the business... Enjoy the mix everyone!
"The fact that it was a party rather than something recorded at home makes it feel like a bit of hit-compilation vibe. But the crowd who were there were so young, I'd guess they'd never heard any of this classic stuff before so my idea was to show them the best of what true Deep House has to offer rather than play curiosities for the connoisseurs. Deep House in 2014 has a very different ring than it did say 15 years ago and I used this session to show them how it used to be. The tracklist is included in full - I have no secrets on this one." • Avenue Red Podcast #028 - Rubsilent
The 28th Avenue Red Podcast is an extravagant 160-minute selection of House & Techno goodies from the vast record collection - and very capable hands - of a veteran DJ known as Rubsilent (real name Hamza Solim) from Istanbul, Turkey. A part-time DJ and a full-time vinyl junkie, Rubsilent started collecting records back in 1996 and it has been his obsession ever since.
Rubsilent was first bought to our attention with his incredible tribute mix of Chicago's Relief Records (https://soundcloud.com/rubsilent/relief-records-chicago-1994), a juggernaut session that really did justice to the sounds of the label and illustrated how hard-edged and unique this Chicago brand of music was. It is interesting to note that Hamza had actually moved to Chicago for University in year 2000, which he notes was partially motivated by his desire to pay a musical pilgrimage to this enormous factory of house music. He moved back to Istanbul in 2007 with a much advanced record collection and inevitably a better knowledge of the rich musical heritage of the sprawling US megacity that is rarely disputed to be the birthplace of house music.
From listening to his Relief mix we had a dig through his other mixes... seemingly a 1-man mix machine delivering music with flowing consistency, intelligent sequencing and unreal selections. We're very used to these types, but even for us this guy is pretty intense. Soak it up in your headphones or on your soundsystem at high volume and enjoy this rare fusion of DJ'ing talent in a truly banging mix!
"I enjoy manipulating tracks with longer transitions, taking listeners on long journeys, never limiting my selections to a specific sub-genre. My primary focus is on House and Techno and anything in between, as my mixes contain a blend of new tunes mixed with timeless out-of-print cuts from yesteryear and yesterdecades." Hamza Solim, November 2014.
