  • Avenue Red Podcast #020 - Esther Duijn
As we hit episode 20 of the Avenue Red Podcast series we welcome a veteran of Deep House & Techno, Esther Duijn from Amsterdam, Holland. Esther has been busy with her musical mission from a young age and has honed in on her own distinctive style of House & Techno with lots of groove and atmosphere with distinct dubby overtones, sometimes skirting along the fringes of the true Dub Techno sound.
As a solo artist and also together with her partner Steady Douglas under their Duijn&Douglas moniker, Esther has 18 vinyl releases to her name across a range of solid labels including Earth Tones, Exquisite Music, Soul People Music, Feelharmonic Records and Housewax to name a few.
Esther is a resident DJ at Sisyphos, Berlin, co-organiser of Donker at Club Up in Amsterdam and also hosts a Berlin night called Another Earth that has had the likes of Moritz von Oswald, Anton Zap and Tom Ellis as guests. Panorama Bar, Zur Wilden Renate, Wanted! (clubs in Berlin); Berns, Kruthuset (clubs in Stockholm); Studio 80, Trouw (clubs in Amsterdam) are a few of the other more noteworthy nightspots to have embraced her sound to date. She is also playing at Freerotation Festival (England) and Tomorrowland Festival (Belgium) this summer, so make sure you catch her playing if you're lucky enough to make it to either of these events!
This mix is just over an hours-worth of Esther doing what she does best - ripping through a bunch of dancefloor-friendly house and techno records and keeping things interesting, atmospheric, deep, raw and never loosing her focus on the groove. Enjoy the mix!

  • Avenue Red Podcast #019 - Ben Boe
This summer-fresh installment of the Avenue Red Podcast series comes from London-based DJ, producer and label-owner Ben Parkinson, AKA Ben Boe to those in the Knoe! His Boe Recordings label has gathered some seriously high-grade moss since it's inception back in 2008 with a juggernaught discography of releases from heavy-hitters and underground talents including Burnski; KiNK; Leif; Iron Curtis; Kris Wadsworth and Nick Lawson to select a few. There is a new release coming from Anaxander on 11th August on limited 12" vinyl called Travelogues EP, which also features a remix from Ben himself. We advise keeping a diary entry for that!
Last year Ben also opened a secondary tube line with a sub-label called For Those That Knoe - in Ben's own words... "For Those That Knoe is a House and Techno label from the UK focusing on under the radar tracks recorded by unsung heroes, ripped from dusty DATs and lovingly re-mastered and pressed onto vinyl for like-minded people and music collectors alike". Just the kind of project that Avenue Red has got full support for.
You can catch Ben playing at the intimate and rather intriguing Field Maneuvers festival at the end of August that is held "in a beautiful riverside location 60 minutes outside of London" (unspecified). But as a precursor to that, dive into this mix from the man himself. An all-vinyl mix that is a diverse and nutritious stew of house, techno and electro that will leave even the most hungry and connoisseur-like music heads out there feeling fulfilled and coming back for seconds and thirds, no doubt! Enjoy the mix people, we certainly did.

  • Avenue Red Podcast #018 - Emma Champion
London-based vinyl DJ Emma Champion spins us 16 records, 10+ years old with a fine selection of House and Garage from a golden era. This mix really captures the kinds of House/Garage hybrid sounds that were burning away nicely in the 90's, an area of music that Emma has totally nailed and she has made it a mission to track down all the music that was so influential and exciting for her during those years as a garage raver in London.
Emma asked us to keep this write-up brief but we will finally say that you can catch her spinning her niche wax selection on her weekly Friday night radio show, which is broadcast live from 22:00 till 00:00 on VisionRadioUK.com - enjoy the mix and do check out her shows, they are awesome!

  • Avenue Red Podcast #017 - Profet
Moving on from the last fine installment of the Avenue Red Podcast by Exos in Reykjavik, Iceland, we travel to another capital city in the opposite corner of Europe for this new addition. For number 017, we have a very interesting mixture of Detroit-tinged deep house records from a DJ from Bucharest, Romania who goes by the name of Profet. We first noticed Profet from a recent promo mix he put out for his Bucharest-based agency Sonus Discis, and we know quality when we hear it. With a confident swagger through distinctly jazzy and techy swathes of house music with a rich musicality, Profet has a really unique way of smoothly shifting through the gears and gets a really good eclectic vibe going in his sets. This mix for Avenue Red is no exception.
He plays regularly at prolific gigs in the Romanian capital, most notably for the Chameleon parties for which he is a resident at the prestigious Control club. He has played alongside some world-renowned underground DJ's including: Even Tuell; Scott Grooves; Marcellus Pittman; Hakim Murphy; John Heckle and FUNKINEVEN to name a few. Also worth noting - Profet along with his friend and Chameleon co-resident Luger have busily amalgamated a hardware-only setup and are staring down the barrels of production work too, so this is yet another staple in the burgeoning Romanian music scene to look out for! We are very pleased to have his contribution to our series as here he demonstrates a really unique and fresh approach to constructing a story with pure wax.
"A selection of special, beloved tracks that I love to play. I don't think in terms of 'house' or 'techno'... I just think the only criteria should be 'good music!'" Profet, June 2014

  • Avenue Red Podcast #016 - Exos
16 isn't a particularly special number. But this is a particularly special installment! From Reykjavik, Iceland - the world's northernmost capital dubbed as "The Worlds Biggest Little Metropolis" as the city holds two thirds of the Icelandic population - we present Exos (real name Arnviður Snorrason), a unique and creative techno innovator who has become well-known for his uber-quality releases on respected labels such as Force Inc. Music Works, Mosaic, Symbolism and also Thule Records, a cult-status Icelandic techno label that has been recently reincarnated under a new name, Strobelight Network.
This 75-minute vinyl mix is the product of a great deal of care and attention. As per usual we asked Exos to dig deep in his collection to come up with something truly special and what we have here is a treasure trove of techno gems and lost oddities that are deep, dubby, blissful, melodic, bold, strange and at times completely "far-out" (Iceland style!). We are pleased that he has paid some homage to the music that has originated from his Icelandic peers as we have records here from his friends Yagya (Aðalsteinn Guðmundsson), Thor (Þórhallur Skúlason) and also his father who is known as Octal (Snorri Arnarson).
As we were digging through the submitted tracklist to normalise it to our usual format and resolution of detail, we realised that the collective value of all these records is in the region of £1000+ on current discogs prices. But musically, end-product-wise, this mix is much greater than the sum of it's parts thanks to the wizardry of Exos on the decks and we are glad to deliver something priceless that you can download for free. These incredible records... they are in good hands already.
"In my life, I am experiencing a touch of timeless awareness. The time is speeding up, I am confusing time and there is something happening to the "Now" as I understand it. That is something that I try to explain in this mix. Music from different directions from here to there. It's also a Spring-time soundtrack for my favorite time of the year when April, May and June hits their magic with sunshine, lollipops and rainbows. The highlight in my life is my unborn nephew who will come to light in 2 weeks. Happy summer to all of you." Exos, May 2014

  • Avenue Red Podcast #015 - Chris Boardman
The 15th Avenue Red Podcast comes from Chris Boardman, a Nottingham-based DJ who has caught our attention recently with his new residency at Dudley Strangeways & Michael McLardy's Leftback record label parties. After an eye-opening trip to Back To Basics in Leeds as a youngster in the year 2000, Chris got hooked on proper House and Techno music and later began DJ'ing in 2007 and developed his own unique style of deep, brooding, groove-laden techno.
Chris regularly plays gigs around his hometown of Nottingham and the nearby city of Derby and has gigs upcoming at Strawberry Fields Festival in Leicestershire and one in Greece later this year too.

  • Avenue Red Podcast #014 - Pawel Kobak
For the 14th Avenue Red Podcast we have a 72-minute vinyl mix from Pawel Kobak: an accomplished pianist; flutist; guitarist; DJ; producer and the owner of the record label Route 33, which was nominated for a Swedish Grammy award in 2000 and 2001. Pawel started as a musician, DJ and club promotor in his hometown of Stockholm, Sweden in the early 1990's and had his first record released in 1995 on Fluid Records. He then went on to make releases on some good labels such as i! Records, Lace, Metamorphic, Deeplay, Tricircle and Manuscript. He then spent some years in Paris, London and then Barcelona on a mission DJ'ing and promoting Swedish house music and artists. From his first release to the present day his style has remained consistent: a distinctive and unique blend of grooving House with soulful elements meshed in with deep, techy ingredients. His disparate range of disciplines and influences bleed into his music nicely, it seems.
This mix is Pawel's first podcast mix - we contacted him and asked for a raw vinyl mix with plenty of material "from the archives" and that is exactly what we got. Note that track 5 is one of Pawel's older tracks under his City Dreams alias with Fredrik Stark. There is some newer material on this mix too from Stockholm-based Romb records, a project run by Pawel's friend that he is now releasing his music on - the mix includes one of his more recent tracks "Got Me Burning" on the Romb label, which was his first vinyl release in several years. Pawel has plenty of new releases to come later in 2014 including more on Romb and a remix for Finest Blend Records. Keep a look out!
