Avenue Red

The unluckily numbered Avenue Red Podcast is a heads-down session of modernist Tech House & Techno from Grimsby-based Connor Hall AKA Conrad. Having started DJ'ing 3 years ago, Connor has become heavily engrossed in his musical passion and alongside his vinyl-junkie-ism he has made strides in the world of producing music too, having put out a debut release on Bosnia & Herzegovina-based @gentlemen-lounge-records, and he has another due out soon on Kadinsky Records too. He plays at various gigs around his hometown alongside Carl Hardy and has played at numerous spots around Sheffield and is steadily working up his profile as a DJ.

He sent us this mix over and we instantly took a shine to his steady workflow through sequences of groove-laden trippy music that strongly leans towards the Fear Of Flying label sound - to us, this can only be a very good thing! Check out this heady mix from a name to watch out for!

The third episode of the Avenue Red 1210 series is another 12 records, 10+ years old from another uber-vinyl-junkie DJ. This time we have one of our very favourite underground selectors out there, Dieter Mit Platten from Vienna, Austria - a notorious crate digger since year 2000 with the utmost taste in all shades of house and techno music. Dieter is a member of the Funkroom collective and DJ's at some of the finest parties in Vienna, most notably the monthly Window Shopping nights at Club Auslage where he has played alongside some prestigious names including Eli Verveine and Julietta.

We want to highlight his ability to flow through house records with an impulsive fluency and zest by making specific reference to his "All Night Long" mix, released last year: https://soundcloud.com/dietermitplatten/all-night-long - 5 hours of premium quality house music. Dieter has put a lot of time and consideration into this mix, having dug deep through his vast collection (pictured in the artwork for this podcast) to create a delightful journey through an hour of old gems and lost oddities. It's been beautifully crafted and is a seriously essential download for repeat listening. As far as we are concerned, this is pretty much as good as it gets.

The 12th instalment of the Avenue Red Podcast comes from Roberto Vitrani, a 40 year-old veteran DJ and long-time record collector from the coastal town of Manfredonia in the South-Eastern region of Italy. Roberto plays at his own events in various intimate and cosy surroundings in bars and small clubs in his hometown.

Roberto was previously unknown to us but we noticed him popping up in the comments of our previous episodes and checked out a mix he had recently uploaded - we asked him to dig through his records, record us a mix and send the wav over. What we have is a one-take session of Roberto playing from his impulses to create a nice set of grooving techy house and some tougher-edged techno records that all glow with character and rhythmic energy. We think it's a really nice trip, one that is best appreciated in one sitting - if you skip through you'll miss the flow, which is very expertly crafted in this mix. **Download button!**

Following on from a veteran in the previous episode, we now have a fresh-faced youngster pushing the wax for the 11th Avenue Red Podcast. From Derry, Northern Ireland we introduce 20 year-old Jordan Magee, a passionate DJ/vinyl collector who has played for various events in the UK & Ireland with his name sharing flyers with some very prominent DJ's including: Prosumer; Âme; Metro Area; Domenic Cappello; Gavin Herlihy and Move D among others.

Also busy cutting his teeth as a producer, Jordan heads to Leeds in September to do the final year of his Music Tech course. Also keeping him busy is the Harmonic Motion project that he runs with some friends, which is a music blog and event based in Derry that kicks off on 15th March with guests Michael Bustard and Thomas Faulkner. Jordan plans for it to be developed further in Leeds, where there is of course a much broader scope for the project to gain momentum and attract larger audiences.

We love this mix, a tasteful selection of music that is deep, intricate, edgy, techy. A nice warm groove is sustained throughout the session and we love how it was recorded too...

The Avenue Red Podcast reaches double figures with an instalment from Malta-based DJ, Producer and label boss Owen Jay. His Batti Batti imprint began as a digital label in 2009 with a dozen releases before it developed into a vinyl label in 2012. It's a project he has built from the ground up and the quality of output has been exceptional from the start, pushing a discerning style of house music full of groove and melody and a strong penchant for warm analogue sounds.

As a producer, Owen has EP's out on a range of labels including Underground Quality, Minuendo and Moods & Grooves as well as his own label. As a DJ he has played all over the shop and has gigs upcoming at Panorama Bar in Berlin for an Underground Quality label party (28-02-2014) and also at Siroco in Madrid (21-03-2014). This mix sums up exactly how he works it on the 1's and 2's. Take a listen!

The 9th episode of the Avenue Red Podcast is an all-vinyl mix that comes from someone previously unknown to us - a local underground vinyl junkie, Techno DJ and producer from the city of Lyon in France who goes by the name Ennony. We liked the deep, turbulent, tunnel-like techno vibes on this mix he sent our way - something we could really get lost in. So here it is.

The 8th episode of the Avenue Red Podcast comes from UK underground hero Carl_H (real name Carl Hardy) from Cleethorpes in the lower North East of England (though officially classed as "somewhere down South" to the folk from up here in Newcastle).

Along with musical cohort Brendan Clark, Carl runs and is resident at a London-based Deep House night called Northern Purpose, which alongside its own highly respected podcast series of the same name has a stunning roster of past guests including Daniel Bell, Mike Huckaby, Dubbyman and Jane Fitz. You get the idea! Carl also co-runs and spins records at Collective Minds in Birmingham, yet another name clearly established on the map of the UK underground music scene having had 2 big events last year that drew a lot of attention with their dazzlingly good line-ups.

When we received this stunning all-vinyl mix we couldn't identify a single track. That was a first. Anyway, in his's own words...

Avenue Red podcast 007 is an all-vinyl mix of deep dubby techno from Gavin Marks who runs the Chicago-based MOSHItaka label, which has just had its first vinyl release in 2013 with the sublimely accomplished Road To River EP from Moscow dub techno artist Doyeq.

MOSHItaka is also a well established podcast with the MOSHImix series, which has featured the talents of well-respected names in the dub techno/deep techno scene including Martin Schulte, Anton Kubikov, Alessandro Crimi (who did our previous episode - https://soundcloud.com/avenue-red/podcast-006-alessandro-crimi) and Sven Laux, to name a few. A series that has got our attention for sure!

We were very pleased that in amongst this fresh selection Gavin included some very special older tracks too, with Bvdub's blissfully ambient "Wish I Was Here" from 2008 flowing into "Floatation Verb" by Sven Weisemann, which was originally released on Smallfish in 2008 also. You can never go wrong with the inclusion of a Rhythm & Sound track either - timeless, just the way we like it!

Get ready for some serious DEEPNESS. Based in the city of St. Gallen, high up amid the Alps of eastern Switzerland, Austrian-born Alessandro Crimi delivers a 1-hour transmission of the kind of techno you'd imagine more likely to have eminated from somewhere in the depths of the Mariana Trench in an all-vinyl mix of exquisite taste.

With his distinctive sound of dub-infused house and techno that is rich in spacey pads, echoey chords, sinuous melodic structures and discerning beats, he is often found skirting along the territorial borders of quintessential Dub Techno stylings. Alessandro has made a name for himself with his strong productions and remixes and also his gigs at prestigious venues including: Harry Klein Club in Munich; Club Home in Amsterdam; Rohstofflager in Zurich and Macarena Club in Barcelona, to name a few. He is hailed as a true specialist for playing warm-up sets, which requires a delicate touch and a good mind for developing a pathway through records to build the energy levels steadily.

Last year Alessandro set up vinyl label Waehlscheibe, that along with the help of his friends he has now driven to the cusp of it's 4th release - we have heard the samples and are sure it will make some big waves!
