  • Avenue Red Podcast #050 - Keith Anderson
Avenue Red is 50!! And to celebrate this milestone of celestial mixed-up electronic music installments we present a hardened veteran from the London House/Techno scene, Keith Anderson. He is the man behind our favourite live-streaming DJ/artist platform, Timeline Music, which is home to Verdant Recordings and Steve S's own respective shows and very notably Brad P & Rai Scott's Mood Sync Radio among a great many talented others.
Keith started Timeline Music alongside Terry Mitchell to document futuristic, forward thinking music from both past and present, streaming and cataloguing live and pre-recorded audio/visual performances by DJs from around the world. Timeline Music also has the upfront reviews section, "Quality Control", filtering out the quality forthcoming releases from the ever increasing amount of background noise.
After being a huge Hip Hop fan in the mid-80's Keith moved on to listening to Acid House and started digging many forms of Detroit and Detroit-inspired Music. He then bought his first pair of decks a year later and has never looked back. He has played at some of the biggest Techno events in London including Ultimate Bass, Eurobeat 2000, Deep Space, Analogue City and many more.
"I have always focussed hard on the technical side of the DJ'ing game... I have always believed that the mixing is just as important as the music. This set shows the Deeper side of things, so hope you enjoy this tunnel experience." Keith Anderson, October 2015

  • Avenue Red 1210 Mk7 - Perseus Traxx
It's now 6 months since the last episode of our 1210 sister series, so first a recap of the concept: named after Technics 1210 turntables, this is all about the Oldskool. The DJ is to select exactly 12 records that are 10+ years old. For Mk7 we welcome Perseus Traxx (real name Nigel Rogers) from York, England, who has had vinyl releases on Bunker, M>O>S, Photic Fields, Boe Recordings, BoomChik, Chiwax, Sequencias and Future Flash to name a few. Here Nigel has delivered a portrait of the ground-zero early 80's House music that is now commonly referred to as "Proto-House". The rest is from the man himself...
"Ahhhh, sweet rebellion. I did this mix on a pair of 1200s. Podcasts and mixes forming a document which can be re-visited numerous times fill me with dread. Hearing things in my flat is a nightmare, not helped by the anxiety of whether the tone arm will be stuck or the bass pot on the other channel will play up, though I'm quite happy with this.
My concern was that it would become too house based, but I think the balance is about right. Actually the J.M. Silk record is the first record to vocally use the term 'House'. I got the Hanson & Davis record after Chris Duckenfield posted a link from Youtube called 'How People Originally Cut Shapes To House In The UK' which was shot in Manchester in 1986 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBYvWPdUOHM). I thought it was immense and he told me what it was, so I hit discogs, also picking up a copy of the house record he'd made using the bass line. This clip shows a legacy of music pre-dating the oft-told narrative of acid house emanating from London when a group of DJ's came back from Ibiza. It also shows how some weird ass funk sat so neatly next to house.
Music is for what the crowd are doing. Similarly, I picked up a copy of 'I Love You' by Yello the other week after hearing it on an episode of New York Dance Stand filmed at Danceteria in 1983 which was embedded in an article about Mark Kamins, the DJ there, and how he fused all kinds of music together as electronic music was starting to become even more prevalent (http://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2014/02/mark-kamins-interview). Inspiration comes from all over and some things just click into place. I wanted to do something different and I suppose this is the sort of thing I've been filling my head with. Listening back, the content of the records used is pretty much about love, sex and dancing, the main reasons people go to nightclubs. I hope you enjoy the mix and check out the links once you've finished." Nigel Rogers, August 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #048 - Rob Moller
We are pleased to release yet another Avenue Red Podcast episode from a local Newcastle DJ: Rob Moller. Rob is a resident alongside Nicky Mann and Damien Walker at the excellent CTRL parties that have graced Cosmic Ballroom and various other venues in the City with some very fine electronic music, with guests including Rødhåd, Mark Broom and a slew of other talented local music heads.
Rob's Soundcloud page became alight with some incredible recorded mixes this year, both titled as volumes 1 & 2 of "100ft Under"... This mix was destined to become volume 3 of his new series but rather naturally for pathological chancers like us, we nicked it for Avenue Red!! :D
We noticed in the accompanying texts that the theme of the two aforementioned mixes was "hangover vibes... hence feeling 100ft under!". We quizzed Rob about the reason for this obscure time to hit the record button: "I started 100ft under that way and I suppose it's now a bit of a ritual! I think it has worked rather well for me. My collection spans across lots of disparate styles and genres and it gives me some kind of structure as I think being hungover makes me select tracks with sounds that help to sooth my mind and allow me to float away on the musical journey!"
This mix certainly is soothing: loaded with blissful, melancholic melodies; dreamy, ghostly tracks that make you feel like you ate the wrong kind of mushrooms in your bolognese meal earlier; hypnotic, trippy passages and some downright beautiful ornaments of the deeper shades of House & Techno music! As always, enjoy the mix everyone, not being shy to share it to your friends. And not as always: Rob is playing at a mini Avenue Red "launch party" for this episode at The Tanners Arms in Newcastle this coming Saturday (22-08-2015) alongside Alec Pritchard. If you're in town, come along from 20:00-00:00!
"Sticking with the same theme as with my own little 100ft Under series (see Soundcloud link below) I wasn't focused on the genre so much, it's more about selecting tracks that evoke a certain type of feeling... very dreamy and evocative. The kind of tracks that help you forget what you're doing and allow you to get lost in the music." Rob Moller, August 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #047 - Chris Boardman
After a recent spate of gigs in his hometown of Nottingham, nearby Derby and slightly further afield Leeds, we welcome the return of Leftback Records homeboy Chris Boardman for a second round on the Avenue Red Podcast series. This mix provides a great summary of Chris' role in the Leftback label parties alongside his friends Dudley Strangeways & Michael McLardy; a deep, dubby Techno vibe to warm up and some mind-blowing minimal Techno rhythms & sounds for laters.
"We've got some Leftback gigs coming up in Notts including a Saltwater Rooftop Terrace party and some events lined up in a few other cities. I will be venturing over to Birmingham to play at some good-looking parties but it's all still to be confirmed at the moment. I really want to start pushing on with my productions and hopefully get my sound pressed onto wax!"
"I like to play the deep, dubby side of Techno which I really tried to prove in this mix. I begin with some warm Dub Techno vibes, bringing it up and down along the way and taking it up a gear at just the right moment. I love the stripped-back, looping kinds of 4/4 tracks that you can get all wrapped up in and lose your mind to... makes you forget about all of your troubles and worries and just enjoy a timeless moment in the music. This is one of the key things I love about House and Techno, it can be seriously transcendental!" Chris Boardman, August 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #046 - Luger
The 46th Avenue Red Podcast installment comes from Luger (real name Dorin Croitoru) from Bucharest, the sprawling capital city of Romania. Luger is a friend and musical peer of Profet, the man behind that awesome 17th installment in our series (https://soundcloud.com/avenue-red/podcast-017-profet). Through their events platform Chameleon and various other happenings at Bucharest’s Control Club, Luger and Profet have played alongside some incredible global acts, as Luger states himself: “We are working on bringing artists that we respect and are close to the directions we feel we must take in regards with our visions of quality music. Our last guest was XDB and in the past we brought over Marcellus Pittman, Hakim Murphy, John Heckle and Paul du Lac to mention a handful. I'm a regular at Control either with local players and movers on the scene or in supporting acts for control guest DJ’s such as Even Tuell, Ulf Eriksson, Legowelt, Gunnar Haslam, DJ TLR and so on”.
This mix is an incredibly smooth and dynamic mixture of eerie, trippy ambient soundscapes; curiously introspective moments; hypnotic minimal tracks and also some beautifully crafted melodic tracks too… it’s something that you can really lose yourself in and then re-find yourself an hour later after the silence has begun.
“The first thing that comes to mind about how this mix came out is balance. A podcast is a great opportunity to stop researching music outside of the box and concentrate on what is already inside the collection. The process of finding pieces of a jigsaw that fit perfectly and crafting a spot, a shape or a space for something else or around something is one of the best ways of getting a deeper knowledge and understanding of the music that lured you in. The way you map it all out is where the DJ shows their true creative edge.” Dorin Croitoru, August 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #045 - DJ Jes
The 45th Avenue Red Podcast comes from Chicago House music veteran, DJ Jes. Born in Mexico and raised in Chicago, Jes has been exposed to the vibrant Chicago music culture since the early 80's. It was very early on when he realised his passion for music and began working on his musical career. Growing up on the West side of Chicago he saw his peers choosing a lifestyle of gangs and guns, with daily activity of violence and crime. Embracing his negative childhood exposure, Jes chose a different road, using that negative to propel him into a life of musical expression.
Twenty five years later, Jes is still continuing his path of musical creativity. Since his first EP on Chicago Groove in 1995 Jes has developed a rich discography on some great labels such as NRK, Afterhours, Camouflage, Tango, Siesta, Concrete Music and his own imprint Fresca Recordings to name a few. Also notable is a more recent 2014 release on Tardis, a young label run by Oscar Schubaq & Eli Verveine. His presence on the old West Coast US House mainstay labels is particularly strong and it seems Jes has kept the essence of that incredible era of House music as part of his modern-day production style.
As a DJ, the Chicago underground has been moved by DJ Jes for over 25 years and he was an original House pioneer who played at Chicago's infamous House & Techno club "The Warehouse". Jes has the technical skills and musical talent to give us all the soulful energy that only music can communicate. The recent venture of Jes's label, Fresca recordings, has with its Twentieth release received well-deserved media and industry attention. Jes continues to showcase and collaborate with other talented producers world-wide, having previously worked on music with many true legends including Tyree Cooper, Fast Eddie, Robert Owens and Justin Long among others. This exclusive mix is a proper slammin' summer party session, Chicago-style! Enjoy the mix everyone and as always, don't be shy to Like, Repost & Share!
"This mix is a House Blend of tunes from the 90's mixed with the latest in House.
I have selected these incredible House Tracks for the ones who truly love our sound. Some of these selections were played at some amazing Underground Parties I have been lucky enough to spin at. Hope you enjoy my picks for my friend Alec and friends @ Avenue Red. Thank you, DJ Jes. Peace." Jes Galvez, July 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #044 - Josh Lentink
Avenue Red Podcast 044 comes from Josh Lentink, a vinyl collector, Techno enthusiast and 2-deck gymnast from London who has put together for us a real treat of deep, intricate 4/4 noise of the highest order. It's always nice to see a mix arriving in your inbox with tracks from the likes of Exos, Oz Artists, Makam, Dario Zenker etc. and this has been masterfully put together by the man behind the Reprise Podcast series that was credited to have been inspired by Avenue Red. Get into this!
"Lately I've been listening to a lot of Dub Techno but not necessarily mixing it. I enjoyed pulling some of those records out for this. I also concentrated quite a bit on the structure; I wanted the energy to build steadily but was also happy for it to drift into some more hypnotic sections. Often when my mixes start this way they become much heavier towards the peak. It was nice to keep this one fairly deep and dubby throughout." Josh Lentink, July 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #043 - Transition Crew
The next Avenue Red podcast comes from the 4-man Transition Crew based around the North London/Stevenage area. 4 true purveyors who have lived a life of music and all that follows... searching, digging, DJ'ing and producing sounds primarily focussed on House, Techno, Electro and IDM styles. These 4 have between them a Universe of music knowledge and have kept their ears to the ground for a long time, all the while unearthing the sweetest underground cuts found throughout a significant period of observable electronic music history. This mix is to promote their new Transition project, which is a fresh and exciting event/group/movement/page and also a monthly event in the Kings Cross area of London.
The mix enclosed is a blinding extravaganza of everything in their bag that they... well, chose to pull out for it. As you can probably tell, we don't want to say much else about it for now - the mix sells itself, as quality speaks for itself. The other information is from the Transition Crew, enjoy!
"We like techno, we like funk, we like a groove and we like it deep. We have a lot in common as purveyors and collectors of techno and so it seemed logical to put our hearts, ears and heads together for Transition. It's just a small party in a pub basement for our like-minded friends at this stage; a natural extension of our regular 'techno summits' of talking music and drinking ale together, as we have for the last few years when we realised we all lived in the same town and enjoyed each others friendship.
This recording came together a couple of weeks ago with 4 bags full of records largely unplanned for and the end result is this mix (it's the second take as we realised mic got left open on the first).
Transition part two is Saturday 4th July @ Star of Kings Cross.

Enjoy the mix and maybe see some of you on the 4th?

  • Avenue Red Podcast #042 - Alex Tasso
The Avenue Red Podcast is once again happy to deliver a fresh dosage of deep'n'dubby Techno vibes, with Italian artist/DJ Alex Tasso stepping up to the plate. Remember that mega-deep 25th episode in our series from Hydergine? Well, it turns out that Alex is a friend of his and also from the town of Taranto in southern Italy. After receiving this mix out of the blue, we only realised this detail after initially hearing and noting the connection in style to the Hydergine mix. Prepare to enter some trippy sonic landscapes which, with a little imagination, can make you feel as if you are detached, lost and alone on some mysterious alien planet with a strong and rather delightful sense of isolation - no drugs required!
"I am a passionate listener, collector and DJ from Taranto, southern Italy. Since 2007 my love for Dub and Detroit-influenced Techno sounds led me to experiment and express my passion as a self-taught producer. After several slots in the local scene I joined the Sound Department crew in 2014, spreading my idea of Dub/Techno music in one of the most active clubs in the south of Italy." Alex Tasso, June 2015
