  • Avenue Red Podcast #057 - Josh Lentink
We welcome the return of London selector Josh Lentink for his second mix on the Avenue Red Podcast. Here Josh starts off with a golden electro cut and slides through some smooth 4/4 deepness for over an hour. A pleasure as always, keep an eye on this young lad, he has 100% "got something".
Also, make sure you cast your screens over to https://soundcloud.com/reprise - this is Josh's own podcast series, which was apparently inspired into being by Avenue Red. We are flattered Josh! He has obviously worked much harder than us over here, with the latest 30th episode coming within the first year! We'll both keep working to bring quality sounds to your ears, rest assured. Enjoy the mix everyone, the first of 2016 - a solid start.
"Not much to say really, here's a mixture of old and new tracks that came together over a couple of evenings. I wanted to include a variety of genres throughout the mix which helped provide some unexpected changes. Enjoy x" Josh Lentink, January 2016

  • Avenue Red Podcast #056 - Marc Cotterell
As with last year, we sneak in another episode on New Year's Eve! This stunning contribution to our series comes from Marc Cotterell from Alberquerque, New Mexico, USA... yep, the town where Breaking Bad was set! Unusually it just snowed really heavily there (inc. the time when this mix was recorded), hence the unusual picture of Marc's normally desert-like hometown setting.
Marc's Plastik People label was established in 2012 and pays homage to his roots in the various swathes of quality 90's House & Garage music he was/still is into. It's a proper underground vinyl label whose music policy dovetails nicely with Avenue Red's, with artists on the roster including some of our true heroes Julien Jabre and Aqua Bassino amid others that Plastik People first introduced us to including Trinidadian Deep, Life Recorder, Mike Sharon and SoulBasics. The label is also a platform for Marc's own productions.
This set is proper party fodder: starting off in soulful, groovin' House terrain; going through some rugged, bumpty Housey/Garagey stuff; then back into soulful jazzy House again for the finale. Perfectly mixed and excellently crafted, as is the case with everything that Marc puts his hand to. We hope you enjoy this mix and have a great new year ahead! Stay with us, some ace stuff forthcoming :)
"As a DJ I play US House & Garage with a little UK flava thrown into the blender, all mixed on that splendid & mighty Rane MP-2015 mixer, which I just got my hands on recently." Marc Cotterell, December 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #055 - Mist
For the 55th Avenue Red Podcast we welcome a mysterious DJ/producer from Athens, Greece known as "Mist" and also as "Mist Soundscapes". In this 67-minute vinyl session he takes us through a dreamy, floaty, spacey selection of Deep House & Techno records with a very unique style of DJ'ing. Very trippy and relaxing.
"My musical influences range from dub/deep techno/deep house/ambient/downtempo/modern classical/shoegaze/alternative rock. For this mix I wanted to show my way of creating a journey through music, trying to keep a balance from deep to dope. Enjoy!" Elias Vourlias, December 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #054 - Andrew Duke
For the 54th Avenue Red Podcast we welcome a truly talented, hard-working and well-respected veteran of the underground music scene - Andrew Duke from Halifax in Nova Scotia, Canada. Andrew is a music collector, DJ, artist, remixer, sound designer, radio/mix show host and has also been writing about music since 1981.
Andrew Duke In The Mix is his mixshow, which began way back in 1987 during the emergence of true House & Techno initially as a weekly radio show on CKDU 88.1FM Halifax NS Canada and ran through until 2004. He has continued the show independently since then to this very day on various platforms.
As a producer, Andrew had a very nice record out on Own Jay's Batti Batti imprint, which comes with a remix from XDB. Well worth tracking down a copy! In this explosive mix of raw 80's Electro/Freestyle/Hip-House, Andrew has made 7 edits especially for this smoking hot mix for Avenue Red. Get involved and make sure to Like/Share if you're digging it ;)
"A mix of some of my favourite freestyle and early electro cuts, including some edits I did personally for this mix. Dedicated to the memory of the late great New York editing genius, Bad Boy Jose "Chep" Nunez (born 1964, died 8th December 1990)." Andrew Duke, December 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #053 - Mr. Shadow
For 53rd Avenue Red Podcast we present a deep, grooving, soulful mix from Mr. Shadow (real name Mark McFarlane), the man behind the London House cult known as "The Brotherhood Of House". Mark's show runs on Deepvibes Radio and has had some great guests featured, including Avenue Red's Alec Pritchard (https://soundcloud.com/alecpritchard/the-brotherhood-of-house-034-alec-pritchard). The rest is from Mark himself, hope you all dig the selection!
"Being asked to contribute a mix to this immense series has been an honour & hopefully lives up to the very high standards set by the past contributors that have graced this series. I try not to pre-plan my mixes & this one was no different. A lot of my stuff is solidly rooted in the old-school but also appreciating the new as a means to cover a wide spectrum of the House sound in a way that flows. Kicking off with two stone-cold classics from Logic & Mood ll Swing, the mix moves onto some newer cuts that I'm personally feeling at the moment, including Angelo Draetta & Luigi Egitto's “Frozen Eyes” on SP Recordings, also Cocoared's "Funk'N EvaMo" (Only Essence Re-Grooves) on Vital Grooves. A big highlight for me was being able to include two tracks from around '94 that I have never quite managed to incorporate into a set before: The Beloved's "1000 Years From Today" (Todd Edwards Remix) and one for the true veterans at the end - Da Cuban Heelz's "Da Theme".
Hopefully you enjoy this mix as much as I enjoyed mixing it for this wonderful podcast series.
I run a Radio show on Deepvibes Radio called The Brotherhood Of House. The whole ethos of the group/show/events are about promoting that House movement vibe which is severely lacking in today's industry. The shows attempt to showcase lesser-known but non the less talented DJ's & Producers to give them a platform to be heard alongside some very established names, such as Harold Heath, Daniel Ward, Roland Nights, Dweller, DJ Caspa, Dudley Strangeways & many many more." • Avenue Red Podcast #052 - July
The Avenue Red Podcast welcomes the second coming of Frankfurt-based DJ July (real name Julian Hopp) who has put together an uber-deep vinyl mix of obscure, cavernous, hypnotic Techno to follow up on his previous selection of gourmet Deep House cuts. Don't forget your scuba gear!
"For me, Techno music represents an equally broad spectrum of emotions as Classical Music. It is in the same way powerful in creating grandiose fantasies as it is straining in it's energy and exorbitance. It contains all of the emotional diversity that I want to perceive within electronic music." Julian Hopp, November 2015

  • Avenue Red Podcast #051 - Rob Cesar
After yet another intentional pause in our output, where we have left the 50th episode simmering at the surface of a rich stock of mixes for 5 whole weeks, Avenue Red are back to deliver more underground audio cargo to your iPods, hi-fi's, memories and minds! For the 51st installment we present a delightfully groovy, shiny, melodic deep House selection from Rob Cesar, a music collector, DJ, physicist and high school teacher from Luxembourg.
We had heard some of Rob's mixes before he sent this one over, with him having recently delivered the goods for our podcasting contemporaries at Hello Strange (https://soundcloud.com/hello_strange/rob-cesar-hello-strange-podcast-134), Smile This Sound (https://soundcloud.com/smile-this-sound/rob-cesar-smile-this-mixtape-49) and a stunning edition for Deep Afterhour (https://soundcloud.com/deepafterhour/rob-cesar-deep-afterhour-proposal) around a year ago. He didn't need to work too hard introducing himself to us.
Rob is an 80's kid and has been into music and specifically dance music ever since he can remember. Creating VHS-mixtapes from MTV's "Party Zone" was his favourite pastime before he fell under the spell of the Technics MKII's in the late 90's. Noted for the accuracy of his mixing style, he earned himself regular appearances in Luxembourg-based clubs and festivals in the early 2000's. Rob tells us he is less active in his night-life shenanigans today, what with the responsibilities of adult life... but he hasn't lost an inch of his interest in music, as his output on Soundcloud readily testifies.
"The story about this mix is quite simple: about two weeks ago, I was spinning some house tunes at home and, when I listened to the recording, I was like 'DAMN!! We got something going here!'. But as it was all spontaneous and stuff, there were parts in the set where mixing wasn't all good and one or two tracks didn't totally feel right, so I started a new recording, this time with a clear line in mind and then there it was, a collection of pure timeless house music, nothing more, nothing less...
Hey, you know, I come from a generation where we used tapes, in order to get our music together, you know, just, doing your own mix-tapes and stuff, and I was sitting at home, listening to the radio, and, waiting for my favourite song to come up, and, when it did, they always, the radio stations always had to fade in and fade out early so you weren't able to get the whole piece together, so what I did was trying to get, find all the missing pieces in the radio, and I spent like, hours, just to get it all together you know, and I never did, actually, because, the radio stations weren't allowed to use the beginnings, the very beginnings and the very ends, but I didn't know that as a kid so I was like naive and I was waiting and waiting for hours to fulfil my, my mix-tape, my collection of songs, you know, hum, and that was home taping for me, you know..."
