Is your work consuming you? Or maybe instead, are you constantly consuming, so you have to work? Yeah, read that again. This week, Erin interviews Ryan Sterling, CEO of Future You Wealth and author of "You're making other people rich" to talk about how you should be looking at your wealth management strategy in an entirely different way. He talks about the cycle of consumption and how that can distort your view of happiness and your path forward. This week, Erin interviews Ryan Sterling, CEO of Future You Wealth and author of "You're making other people rich" to talk about how you should be looking at your wealth management strategy in an entirely different way. He talks about the cycle of consumption and how that can distort your view of happiness and your path forward. Erin sits down with Ryan Sterling, the CEO of Future You Wealth, and a fellow TEDx speaker. Ryan is transforming and modernizing how we think about wealth accumulation and our mindset around it. They both share their experiences with TEDx, that it's like preparing for so long only to have it all finish in a flash. Were their Chili's margaritas the proper capstone to this life-long dream?! Ryan talks about his financial mindset journey over the last several years, where he went from being outcome-oriented, to focussing on the journey itself. He talks about setting a financial goal he had for himself, and the epiphany he had when he actually reached his goal. That joy he expected to have? It was nowhere to be found. He realized all he was doing was continuing to consume more and more things. When he took a step back, he realized that both he and his wife were on a path to nowhere (potentially, quite literally.) That's when he decided to clear his mind, starting by eating cleaner for a few months. That gave him just enough space and clarity for both he and his wife to start turning their life around. They both reconsidered how they were living, and that was the beginning of a powerful transformation. Erin follows this with a story of her own realization that she wanted to make a change in life, looking at her financial situation and thinking 'I could keep remodeling the house, or I could take the time and space to figure out what's really next in life.' Ryan asked himself "what do I want?" What did he want his days to look and feel like? Who did he want to spend time with? After he removed the constraints of money and material things, he realized it was autonomy, freedom, and agency over his life that he wanted most. From there he was then able to look at this actions and ask whether that would help him live the life he wanted or not. They move on to talk about a system that is designed for us to be consumers. Ryan asks "How do we fight back against an intentionally designed system? You can't buy your way to happiness, so what can you do to get there?" Ryan talks about his own experience - signing up for a marathon and starting to write more. He didn't do this because it was some guaranteed road to happiness. He did this because he was no longer consuming, he was creating. He had a hobby, he had goals, he had personal achievements that didn't require consumption (except maybe more calories for all that running.) They end with Erin asking more about Ryan's book "You're Making Other People Rich." Ryan explained that he hopes it will help people invest in their own future, and show people how to truly own their life.
