The Cardinals finally had an easy peasy win over the Rockies in this series, but all it got them was a series split. That's not what was needed when the series began, but by Sunday, of course, it was the most they were eligible to do.

How do you feel about the split and the state of the team as they continue to tread water in the standings during a portion of the schedule that should have been a building block toward contender status?

In Ep. 585 of B-Schaeff Daily, Brenden Schaeffer discusses the Cardinals 6-5 loss to the Rockies on Saturday, June 8, 2024.

The Rockies did everything in their power to hand the game to the Cardinals on a platter and the Cardinals politely declined to win it.

A three-run throwing error helped give STL the lead, but the Cardinals had a rare mishap by Andrew Kittredge that contributed to the loss. But it would not be fair to blame it solely on the usually steady reliever.

The Cardinals let an opposing starting pitcher dominate them who had no business doing it. The offense was anemic. And the fundamentals in several areas of the game, particularly on defense, have evaporated.

All of it led to a very testy postgame presser with Oli Marmol, which we will discuss here in this episode. Strap in, it's a long one.

But the takeaway: This day was a bad, bad look for the Cardinals.

But the Cardinals kept battling and had a key eighth inning that saw Oli Marmol make a gutsy decision to pull Nolan Gorman for a pinch runner... And it paid off in a major way.

With Carlson chipping in a 2-RBI double at that point to solidify the game for Ryan Helsley in the ninth, is the monkey off DC's back? Can he become a more prominent contributor for the Cardinals moving forward?

Sonny Gray came apart at the seams in the fifth inning as he walked three batters with two wild pitches and a pair of stolen bases allowed. He was candid with his frustration after the game, but didn't offer a ton in the way of an explanation for why things went so wrong.

You'll hear from the Cards starter in this episode, and we'll talk through his outing as well as the struggles for his catcher Ivan Herrera in helping to limit the damage in that frustrating fifth inning. Herrera's management of the running game is becoming a glaring issue for St. Louis.

And of course, so is their un-timely offense as Thursday was another night where RISP was a real issue.

Brenden Schaeffer discusses Wednesday's 4-2 win for the Cardinals over the Astros as Miles Mikolas earned the W for his six strong innings of two-run baseball.

It was a bit of a quirk to see Mikolas pulled from the game after only 62 pitches, but Oli Marmol explained why it was about factors other than pitch count that led to him determining that it was the right time to turn to his bullpen at that point.

And, of course, the Triumvirate came through with JoJo, Kit and Hels Bells finishing the job. And newsflash, Helsley looked back-back when it comes to that fastball velo and location. He seemed to trust the command of the pitch again which is bad news for NL hitters.

Plus, some good fundies and small ball by the Cardinals helped to establish a lead in this one. And Nolan Arenado found the Crawford boxes before he left H-Town.

Andre Pallante turned into a pumpkin one start after his brilliant game against the Reds. This one wasn't very sharp as he allowed six earned runs in three innings of work while giving away far too many freebies to the Houston lineup.

Does Pallante's rough night shed further spotlight on the reality that the Cardinals need to take action with this fifth rotation spot? It certainly reminds us of Mozeliak's failed gamble on the 'We hope our five (starters) can go' strategy of just hoping the penciled-in top five wouldn't miss any time due to injury this year.

The Cardinals are also dealing with other issues that we break down in this episode, including the general problem with fundamentals for this team right now, Arenado's overall struggles, and Donovan taking one of the worst at-bats we've seen from anyone all season.
