  • कटुवचनं न युक्तम्

    कस्यचित् मठस्य व्यवस्थापकः कञ्चित् युवकं चन्दनस्य उद्घर्षणं क्रियताम् इति आदिशत् । प्रतिवचनं किमपि अनुक्त्वा सः उद्घर्षणं कुर्वन् रामनामजपम् अकरोत् । किञ्चित् कालानन्तरम् अज्ञाततया अग्निसूक्तपठनम् आरब्धम् । तावता चन्दनलेपः सिद्धः आसीत् । वेदज्ञाः तद् लिप्तवन्तः, किन्तु तेषां देहे तापः अभवत् । व्यवस्थापकः युवकं क्षमां प्रार्थितवान्, युवकः वरुणसूक्तम् अपठत् । ततः वेदज्ञाः शीतलताम् अनुभूतवन्तः । एषः युवकः 'राघवेन्द्राचार्यः' इति ख्यातः अभवत्।

    The manager of a certain monastery instructed a young man to grind sandalwood. Without saying anything in response, he began the grinding while chanting the name of Lord Rama. After a while, he unknowingly started reciting the Agni Suktam. By the time the sandalwood paste was ready, the scholars who applied it felt heat on their bodies. The manager asked the young man for forgiveness and the young man recited the Varuna Suktam. Then, the scholars experienced a cooling effect. This young man became famous as 'Raghavendra Swami'.

  • तल्लीनता

    कस्मिंश्चित् ग्रामे एकः विद्यालयः आसीत्, यत्र गणितविषयस्य अध्यापकः बहुकष्टं सूत्रं छात्रेभ्यः अयच्छत् । विद्यालयात् बहिः मङ्गलवाद्यध्वनिं श्रुत्वा अध्यापकः कञ्चित् छात्रं घटनां ज्ञातुम् प्रेषयति ।  छात्रः प्रत्यागत्य कथितवान् यत् महाराजः ग्रामं प्रति आगतः इति। अन्ये छात्राः महाराजं द्रष्टुम् इच्छन्तः अध्यापकात् अनुमतिं प्राप्तवन्तः । सर्वे छात्राः महाराजं द्र्ष्टुं गतवन्तः । कक्ष्यायां केवलं एकः छात्रः गणितसमस्यायाः परिहारकार्यं कुर्वन् आसीत् । अध्यापकः तस्य निकटे गत्वा कारणं पृष्टवान्, तदा छात्रः 'गणितसूत्रसमस्यापरिहारे मग्नः अस्मि' इति प्रत्युत्तरं अयच्छत् ।  तस्य वचनं श्रुत्वा अध्यापकः महत् आश्चर्यं प्राप्नोत् ।

    In a certain village, there was a school where the mathematics teacher gave a difficult problem to the students. Upon hearing the sound of drums outside the school, the teacher sent a student to find out what was happening. The student returned and informed that the king had arrived in the village. The other students, eager to see the king, sought permission from the teacher and went to see him. Only one student remained in the classroom, working on the math problem. The teacher approached him and asked for the reason. The student replied, ‘I am engrossed in solving the math problem’. Hearing this, the teacher was greatly astonished.

  • आज्ञापालकः शिष्यः

    समर्थरामदासस्य गुरुकुले अम्बादासः नाम कश्चन शिष्यः आसीत् यस्य अप्रतिमा गुरुभक्तिः आसीत् । अतः एव रामदासस्य विशेषप्रीतिः असीत् तस्मिन् । किन्तु अन्ये शिष्याः एतत् न सहन्ते स्म । कदाचित् रामदासः अम्बादासं बिल्ववृक्षस्य शाखां कर्तयितुम् अवदत् ।  अम्बादासः गुरोः आज्ञाम् अनुसृत्य, तद्वृक्षस्य शाखां कर्तयितुम् आरूढवान् । भाराधिक्यात् शाखा छिन्ना जाता । सः कूपे अपतत्। पतनसमये श्रीरामस्य स्मरणं अकरोत् । कूपे तु भगवान् श्रीरामः दृष्टः । अन्ये शिष्याः कूपे पतितं तं दृष्ट्वा रामदासं गृहीत्वा आगतवन्तः । सहपाठिभिः प्रेषितायाः रज्ज्वाः साहाय्येन उपरि आगतवन्तम् अम्बादासं आलिङ्ग्य अवदत् - 'वत्स! आज्ञपालकः शिष्यः भवान् ।  इतः परं भवतः नाम 'कल्याणः' इति ।

    In the gurukul of Samarth Ramdas, there was a disciple named Ambadas who had absolute dedication to his guru. Thus, Ramdas had special affection for him. However, the other disciples could not tolerate this. One day, Ramdas instructed Ambadas to cut a branch of a bilva tree. Following his guru's command, Ambadas climbed the tree to cut the branch. Due to his weight, the branch broke and he fell into a well. As he fell, he remembered Lord Shri Ram and saw Lord Shri Ram in the well. With the help of a rope sent by his companions, Ambadas came up and embraced Ramdas, who said, "Child, you are a disciple who follows orders. From now on, your name will be 'Kalyan'.

  • परिवर्तनम्

    अमरावतीनगरे कस्मिंश्चित् आश्रमे बहवः शिष्याः अध्ययनं कुर्वन्ति स्म । एकः शिष्यः चौर्याभ्यासे लिप्तः आसीत् । अन्यैः शिष्यैः सः द्विवारं चौर्यसमये गृहीतः । तदा सर्वे तं बहिष्कर्तुं गुरुं प्रार्थितवन्तः ।  किन्तु गुरुः तस्य बहिष्करणं न अनुमोदितवान् । 'एषः आश्रमात् बहिष्कृतः चेत् को वा एतम् आहूय विद्यां बोधयेत् ?’ इति अवदत् । एतानि वचनानि श्रुत्वा चोरशिष्यस्य मनः परिवृत्तम् । सः गुरोः पादौ गृहीत्वा अश्रुधारया क्षालितवान् ।

    In the city of Amaravati, there was an ashram where many disciples studied. One of the disciples was involved in theft. He was caught stealing twice by the other disciples. They all requested the guru to expel him from the ashram. However, the guru did not approve of his expulsion. He said, "If he is expelled from the ashram, who will call him and teach him?" Hearing these words, the thief disciple's mind changed and held the guru's feet.

  • भगवतः कार्ये हस्तक्षेपः

    कश्चन कृषिकः महादेवभक्तः आसीत् । तस्य ज्येष्ठा पुत्री कृषिकाय, कनिष्ठा पुत्री कुम्भकाराय च दत्ता तेन । सः यदा ज्येष्ठपुत्र्याः गृहम् अगच्छत्, तदा पुत्र्या वृष्टेः प्रार्थनां कर्तुम् उक्तम् । तदनन्तरं सः कनिष्ठपुत्र्याः गृहम् गतवान् । कनिष्ठा तु पितरं वृष्टिः न भवेत् इति प्रार्थनां कर्तुं प्रार्थयति । तयोः अपेक्षयोः परस्परविरोधे सति सः कृषिकः गुरोः समीपं गत्वा मार्गम् अपृच्छत् । गुरुः तं लोकहितं मनसि निधाय प्रार्थनां कर्तुम् उपदिष्टवान् । ततः सः कृषिकः निष्कल्मषबुद्धया भगवन्तम् उद्दिश्य प्रार्थनां कृतवान् ।

    Once there was a farmer who was a devotee of Lord Mahadev. He had given his elder daughter in marriage to a farmer, and his younger daughter to a potter. When he visited his elder daughter, she requested him to pray for rain. Later, when he visited his younger daughter, she requested him to pray that it does not rain. Faced with these contradictory requests, the farmer sought the advice of his Guru. The Guru, considering the welfare of everyone, instructed him to pray with a pure heart to the Lord. Following this advice, the farmer prayed to the Lord with a clear conscience.

  • योग्यः उत्तराधिकारी

    कस्यचित् राज्यस्य महाराजस्य त्रयः पुत्राः आसन् । तेषु कस्मै देयम् इति प्रश्ने मन्त्रिणा सूचितं यत् अपत्यानि परीक्षितव्यानि इति । अपरस्मिन् दिने पुत्रान् आहूय शतं रूप्यकाणि दत्त्वा सायङ्कालाभ्यन्तरे स्वप्रासादः पूरणीयः इति अवदत् राजा ।  प्रथमः पुत्रः, तैः रूप्यकैः इष्टानि वस्तूनि क्रीतवान् ।  द्वितीयः पुत्रः पितुः आज्ञा पालनीया एव इति धिया धूल्या प्रासादम् अपूरयत् । तृतीयः पुत्रः चतुरः आसीत् । सः केन प्रासादं पूरितवान् यत् दृष्ट्वा राजा सः एव राज्यस्य उत्तराधिकारी भवितुम् अर्हति इति निश्चिनोति ? इति सर्वं कथां श्रुत्वा जानन्तु ।

    A king of a certain kingdom had three sons. When the question of who should inherit the kingdom arose, the minister suggested that the sons should be tested. The next day, the king summoned his sons and gave each of them a hundred silver coins, instructing them to fill the royal palace by the evening. The first son bought various desirable items with the coins. The second son, thinking that the father's command must be obeyed, filled the palace with dust. The third son was clever. What did he fill the palace with that made the king decide that he was the one worthy of being the successor to the kingdom? Listen to the entire story to find out".

  • सुहृदयः महाशयः

    कश्चित् आजीविकाम् अन्विष्यन् ग्रामतः मुम्बापुरीम् आगत्य श्रमिकैः सम्मिल्य कस्याञ्चित् निर्माणशालायां कार्यं करोति स्म। स्वकीयधारणाय अपेक्षितं धनं स्वसमीपे संरक्ष्य शेषं ग्रामे निवसन्त्यै मात्रे प्रेषयति स्म । कदाचित् सः शतरूप्यकाणि मात्रे प्रेषयितुम् इच्छन् एकं संक्षिप्तं लखं विलिख्य रूप्यकैः सह पत्रम् एकस्मिन् पुटके निधाय गृहगमनाय लोकयानम् आरूढवान् ।  लेखेन आर्जितद्रव्येण च सहितं पुटकं केनापि चातुर्येण चोरितम् आसीत् । किन्तु यः तं धनं चोरितवान् सः पत्रं पठित्वा द्रुतहृदयः जातः । सप्तानां दिनानाम् अनन्तरं शतरूप्यकैः सह मातुः चिकित्सायै सहस्ररूप्यकाणि अपि प्रेषितवान् ।

    A man searching for a livelihood came to Mumbai from a village and started working in a construction site among laborers. He saved the money he needed for his expenses and sent the rest to his mother residing in the village. Once, wishing to send a hundred rupees to his mother, he wrote a brief letter and placed it with the money in a small pouch, then boarded a bus to go home. The pouch containing the letter and the earned money was cleverly stolen by someone. However, the thief's heart melted after reading the letter. Seven days later, in addition to sending a hundred rupees, the thief also sent a thousand rupees for the mother's treatment."

  • सो Sपि अहमेव

    गोस्वामी तुलसीदासः यदा जगन्नाथस्य दर्शनं कर्तुं गतवान् तदा तस्य हस्तपादविहीनां काष्ठमयीं मूर्तिं दृष्ट्वा निराशतां प्राप्तवान् ।  नीलाम्बुदश्यामरूपस्य देवस्य दर्शनम् इच्छन् भगवतः प्रार्थनायां निरतः जातः । दिनद्वयम् अन्नं जलं च विना तेन एवमेव विलपनं कृतम् । तावता कश्चित् बालकः जगन्नाथस्य प्रसादं तुलसीदासाय दत्त्वा - 'अहमेव रामः ।  जगन्नथरूपमपि ममैव' इति वदति । भक्त्या प्रसादं सेवित्वा अनन्तरदिने यदा पुनरपि मदिरं गतवान् तदा तेन जगन्नाथ-बलभद्र-सुभद्राणां स्थाने राम-लक्ष्मण-जानक्यः दृष्टाः ।

    When Goswami Tulsidas went to see Lord Jagannath, he felt disheartened upon seeing the wooden idol without hands and feet. Desiring a vision of the dark-blue colored deity, he immersed himself in prayer. For two days, he remained in lamentation without food or water. Then, a boy gave him Jagannath's prasad and said, 'I am indeed Rama. The form of Jagannath is also mine.' Having partaken of the prasad with devotion, when Tulsidas went to the temple again the next day, he saw Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita in place of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra."

  • कर्तव्यपरायणता

    कदाचित् पूणास्थेन केनचित् विद्यालयेन महादेवगोविन्दरानडेवर्यः मुख्यातिथित्वेन निमन्त्रितः आसीत् । जनसम्मर्दस्य निवारणाय कार्यक्रमे निमन्त्रणपत्रेण सह आगतवतामेव प्रवेशः इति निश्चितम् आसीत् । तस्याः व्यवस्थायाः निर्वहणाय नियुक्तः कश्चन स्वयंसेवकः रानडेवर्यम् अपि विना आमन्त्रणपत्रम् अन्तः प्रवेष्टुम् न अनुमतवान् । तावता कश्चन व्यवस्थापकः कुतश्चित् पत्रमेकं रानडेवर्यस्य हस्ते स्थापितवान् ।  तस्य स्वयंसेवकस्य कर्तव्यनिष्ठाम् अभिनन्दन् तस्य स्कन्धे हस्तं स्थापितवान् रानडेवर्यः।

    This story beautifully illustrates the principles of duty and respect. Once, Mahadev Govind Ranade was invited as the chief guest by a school in Pune. To avoid overcrowding, it was decided that only those who had an invitation card would be allowed to enter the event. A volunteer appointed to manage this arrangement did not allow Ranade to enter without an invitation card. Meanwhile, an organizer placed an invitation card in Ranade's hand from somewhere. Appreciating the volunteer's sense of duty, Ranade placed his hand on the volunteer's shoulder in commendation."

  • अपूर्वं भिक्षापात्रम्

    प्रातः प्रथमं राजगृहं प्रविष्टवते भिक्षुकाय सुवर्णमुद्राः, तदनन्तरं आगतेभ्यः भिक्षुकेभ्यः रजतमुद्राः दीयन्ते स्म भोजमहाराजस्य शासनकाले । एकस्मिन् दिने अगवते भिक्षुकाय राज्ञा दत्ताभिः सुवर्णमुद्राभिः लघु भिक्षापात्रं पूर्णं न अभवत् । एतेन राज्ञा ज्ञातं यत् आगतः भिक्षुकः सामान्यः न, अपि च परीक्षार्थमेव आगतः इति । अतः तं पादस्पर्शपूर्वकं नमस्कृत्य तत् पात्रं केन निर्मितमिति पृष्टवान् । तदा हसन् सः भिक्षुकः कानिचन हितवचनानि उक्तवान् । तत् श्रुत्वा राजा वदति - 'जीवने भवान् प्रथमः जनः यः मां सन्तोषस्य अर्थं बोधितवान् । भवान् मम ज्ञानचक्षुषी उन्मीलितवान् । धन्योऽस्मि' इति ।

    "In the reign of King Bhoja, the first beggar to enter the royal palace in the morning would receive gold coins, and subsequent beggars would be given silver coins. One day, the small begging bowl of a beggar who arrived first did not fill up despite the king's gift of gold coins. From this, the king realized that the beggar was not an ordinary person but had come to test him. Therefore, the king bowed down and respectfully touched the feet of the beggar, asking who had made the bowl. Smiling, the beggar spoke some kind words. Hearing this, the king said, 'In my life, you are the first person who has taught me the meaning of contentment. You have opened my eyes of wisdom. I am grateful.'
