Back in Crime

In the Crimemas Volume I finale, Todd Hiles and Stewart Fillmore confront one of the most haunting and divisive crimes ever associated with the holiday season—the death of JonBenét Ramsey.

On Christmas night, in a quiet Colorado home filled with decorations and anticipation, something went terribly wrong. What followed was not just a murder investigation, but decades of suspicion, missteps, and unanswered questions that would fracture public trust and permanently alter how America views crimes behind closed doors.

This case became more than a tragedy—it became a mirror. Of media frenzy. Of investigative uncertainty. Of how quickly a moment meant for joy can descend into something unspeakable.

With careful restraint and respect for the gravity of the case, Back in Crime examines the known facts, the enduring controversies, and the silence that still surrounds what happened that night.

Some crimes never fade.
Some questions never rest.
And some Christmases are remembered for all the wrong reasons.

In a small Tennessee town near Nashville, a bank was targeted by someone wearing a costume no one expected. It wasn’t Christmas. It wasn’t even winter. But the disguise followed a familiar pattern—one tied to celebration, distraction, and the false comfort of tradition.

As investigators looked closer, they began to see something unsettling: this wasn’t a one-off. Different holidays. Different costumes. The same calculated approach. A rotating cast of seasonal characters used to lower suspicion and buy time.

What started as spectacle slowly revealed a deeper recklessness, pushing law enforcement into a chase that would test how far someone was willing to take the performance.

In Cisco, Texas, during a time meant for goodwill and generosity, a man walked into a bank dressed as Santa Claus. What followed was neither joyful nor accidental, but a calculated act that blurred the line between performance and crime.

The disguise worked because it was familiar. Trusted. Disarming. And by the time the illusion collapsed, the damage had already been done.

With careful storytelling and a darker holiday lens, Back in Crime examines how one festive costume became the perfect cover—and how a Christmas symbol was used to carry out a crime no one saw coming.

Todd Hiles and Stewart Fillmore step into the uneasy space where fear, patriotism, and tradition collided. During the height of the Red Scare, even the most beloved symbols of American life were not immune to suspicion.

In 1947, an FBI report quietly raised concerns about a holiday film cherished by generations—alleging that beneath its warmth and optimism lay something far more unsettling. Subtle messages. Questionable themes. A suggestion that the story Americans welcomed into their homes each Christmas might not be as innocent as it seemed.

The claim was never proven. But the shadow it cast lingered—revealing how paranoia could seep into even the safest corners of culture, and how fear had the power to rewrite intent.

With careful perspective and restrained analysis, Back in Crime examines a moment when celebration met suspicion—and when Christmas itself became part of the Cold War.

In Crimemas Case 02 – The Lone Ranger: Unmasked on Christmas Eve, Todd Hiles and Stewart Fillmore turn to a quieter kind of crime—one that struck not through violence, but through symbolism, timing, and audacity.

On Christmas Eve, 1986, in a Houston airport filled with travelers and holiday expectation, something vanished. Not just property—but an identity. What was taken belonged to a man who had spent a lifetime representing justice, heroism, and the triumph of good over evil.

The theft was swift. The setting was public. And the target was unmistakable. To steal from a hero on Christmas Eve wasn’t just a crime—it was a breach of something cultural, almost sacred.

As questions lingered and the loss rippled outward, the incident revealed how even icons are vulnerable, and how myth can be stripped away in the most ordinary places.

With measured insight and a darker holiday lens, Back in Crime explores a case where the mask came off—not by choice, but by circumstance—and where Christmas Eve became the stage for an unexpected unmasking.

In a special presentation from Back in Crime — Crimemas, Todd Hiles and Stewart Fillmore open a series unlike anything before it: a new episode released every day leading up to Christmas, each exploring a crime tied to the holiday season.

Case 01 - Silent Night...Deadly Bomber begins at a time meant for peace, reflection, and goodwill—when violence is least expected and trust is at its highest. During the holidays, packages arrive without suspicion. And for years, one man exploited that assumption.

This episode examines how a campaign of terror unfolded quietly, methodically, and often around moments meant for celebration. As investigators raced against time and tradition, the case became one of the longest and most complex manhunts in American history.

With careful restraint and measured insight, Back in Crime opens Crimemas by exploring how the darkest crimes can hide behind the most familiar rituals—and how even the season of giving can be weaponized.

In the Season Two finale, Case 22 – The Gambler Who Always Won, retired Secret Service agent Todd Hiles and retired FBI agent Stewart Fillmore close the season with the story of a man who made a living by turning risk into profit—and walking away untouched.

Known to the world as Titanic Thompson, he crisscrossed America wagering on cards, golf, and propositions designed to trap the unwary. He wasn’t just lucky—he was precise, patient, and always one step ahead. Wherever the game was played, Thompson seemed to control the outcome.

But behind the charm and the winning streak lay a darker reality. Violence followed him. Rumors clung to him. And the line between skill and survival was razor thin.

In this finale, Back in Crime examines how a man could win so often—and live so long—while skirting the edges of justice itself. For a gambler who always seemed to win… what was the cost of the game?

Retired Secret Service agent Todd Hiles and retired FBI agent Stewart Fillmore shift the focus away from the motorcade and into a quiet Dallas neighborhood—where another death would become inseparable from one of the most scrutinized days in American history.

Just forty-five minutes after President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, Dallas police officer J.D. Tippit was shot and killed in broad daylight. His murder, occurring miles from Dealey Plaza, would quickly be folded into the official narrative—yet key details have remained contested for decades.

Hiles and Fillmore examine what is known, what was assumed, and what was never fully reconciled. Witness accounts, timelines, and investigative decisions raise questions about how Tippit’s killing fit into the larger picture—and whether its significance has been overshadowed by history’s central crime.

With careful analysis and measured storytelling, Back in Crime explores a case that exists in the margins of the JFK assassination, where unanswered questions linger and the line between coincidence and consequence remains disturbingly unclear.

Retired Secret Service agent Todd Hiles and retired FBI agent Stewart Fillmore trace the hidden history of America’s most audacious counterfeiters—and the quiet war waged to stop them.

Beginning in the late 19th century with Emanuel Ninger, known to authorities as Joseph Gilbert, the story unfolds through an era when forged currency threatened the very trust that held the nation together. Ninger’s skill was unmatched, his methods elusive, and his work so convincing it forced law enforcement to rethink how money—and crime—were defined.

Decades later, the trail leads to Emerich Juettner, operating under the name Edward Mueller, a counterfeiter of a very different kind. His operation was smaller, quieter, and nearly invisible—yet it endured for years without detection, raising unsettling questions about how crime can hide in plain sight.

Hiles and Fillmore explore how these two men, separated by time but bound by deception, bookend the evolution of counterfeit crime in America. From master engravers to kitchen-table operations, this episode examines how the battle between counterfeiters and the government became a test of ingenuity, patience, and persistence.

In Case 19 – The Icebox Murders, retired Secret Service agent Todd Hiles and retired FBI agent Stewart Fillmore revisit one of Houston’s most unsettling and misunderstood homicide investigations—an ordinary home tied to a mystery far larger than the crime itself.

On Father’s Day, June 20, 1965, Fred and Edwina Rogers vanished from their quiet neighborhood. When neighbors alerted police, officers found nothing immediately amiss—yet the visit would soon place this case among the most disturbing in Texas history.

As the investigation unfolded, it revealed layers that extended well beyond a single crime scene. Connections emerged that brushed against powerful institutions, lingering questions from the Kennedy assassination, and a web of speculation that has endured for decades. What was coincidence, and what was something more?

Hiles and Fillmore examine the known facts, the unanswered questions, and the controversial theories that continue to surround the case—without losing sight of the victims at its center.

With measured insight and careful storytelling, Back in Crime explores how one Houston murder became entangled with one of America’s darkest chapters—and why the truth remains elusive.
