  • Comic Covers That Make You Feel Like A Perv

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

Ever pick up a comic, look at the sexy cover and think, “maybe this is a bit too sexy for a comic about Emma Frost going to boarding school”?

They always say you should never judge a book by it’s cover. In comics, the opposite is usually the case. Cover art is designed to be eye-catching. The publishers want you to see the cover on the comic racks and pick it up. Some of the most dynamic artists in the business create some of the most interesting and exciting cover art. Sometimes, that’s at the expense of the comic art inside. The cover shows off a woman in a provocative pose but the interior is a regular story with no sexual connotations. While the cover is alluring, it makes it hard to read on the subway without getting strange looks.

Join Andrew and Petula as they talk about some of the most famous comic covers that have made them feel like pervs while reading in public. The works of Greg Horn, Jim Balent, and Adam Hughes are covered. There’s also a look back on the cover controversies of Frank Cho from a few years ago. It’s all coming your way on a very pervy edition of Back Issue Bloodbath. Enjoy the show!

  • Kevin Smith and Comics

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

It’s no secret that Kevin Smith is a comic book fan. Ever since the release of Mallrats in 1995, Smith has been a flag-waving fanboy for the House of Ideas and the Distinguished Competition. It wasn’t long after that that Kevin’s love of comics lead to a notable side career writing for both companies and more! This week on Bloodbath, we look back on the career of Kevin Smith in comics!

In the world of comics, Kevin’s biggest contribution is still 1998’s Guardian Devil story that launched the Marvel Knights‘ Daredevil series. Kevin also made a splash at Oni Press that year, bringing characters from his View Askew films to the comics page. Clerks‘ Dante and Randal had 3 one shots. Jay and Silent Bob got their own miniseries that was later released as a graphic novel called Chasing Dogma. Our journey starts all the way back at this exciting year and takes us to present day.

Join Andrew and Petula as they look at the many comics written by Kevin Smith. His Green Arrow Run. The plans and eventual fallout with the Black Cat. His unfinished Batman story from the past decade. It’s all covered here on the latest episode of Back Issue Bloodbath. Give it a listen!

  • Selina's Big Score

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

If you’re a long time listen to Back Issue Bloodbath, you already know that Andrew loves all things Noir. If you’re a comic book fan, you know that Darwyn Cooke was one of the greats of the modern era. His classic style was a throwback to yesteryears of the funny book business yet always felt relevant. He left this world far too soon, leaving behind some of the best comics and graphic novels any comic fan could ask for. One such graphic novel is Catwoman: Selina’s Big Score.

Before Darwyn became a big name at DC with his masterpiece The New Frontier, he produced a graphic novel in 2002 that would help redefine Catwoman for the 21st Century. Selina’s Big Score is the heist story we always wanted, showcasing the cat burglar’s grand ambitions. Everyone thinks Selina Kyle is dead. She takes advantage of this and plans a great train robbery to steal a large amount of unmarked cash from the mob. Nice work if you can get it. In order to pull off such a feat, she needs a plan, a crew, and a little bit of luck. That last one is a bit hard to come by.

Listen as Andrew and Petula dissect this graphic novel that helped set the table for the Catwoman series by Cooke and Ed Brubaker that would shortly follow. Get ready for some fun as we talk Selina’s Big Score on an ALL NEW Back Issue Bloodbath!

  • Harley Quinn – Breaking Glass

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

This week on Bloodbath, we take a trip into the world of Young Adult Graphic Novels! DC Ink, an imprint of DC Comics, has a new line of graphic novels geared toward pre-teen and teenage readers showcasing some of the company’s biggest characters. Over the past year, they released books starring Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman), Raven from Teen Titans, Mera, and Batman. Each of these books have great production value and sport awesome creative talent. Back in September, they did it again with Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass.

Written by Mariko Tamaki and featuring the artwork of Steve Pugh, Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass is the retelling of Harley’s origin and her introduction to Gotham City. With only 5 dollars and a knapsack, 15 year old Harleen Quinzel is sent to live with her estranged Grandmother. When she arrives, she finds out that her granny is dead. But things are not all that bad when she’s taken in by Mama, Gotham’s finest Drag Queen. She also enrols at Gotham High and meets her new best friend, Ivy. Things are great until they’re not. A story of gentrification, anarchy and true friendship follows.

Join Andrew and Petula as they look at Harley Quinn: Breaking Glass and give their thoughts on the story and art. There’s also talk of drag shows, film clubs and creepy guys in masks. What else would you expect from Back Issue Bloodbath? Give it a listen!

  • Ground Up Reboots

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Petula Neale as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

On this week’s Bloodbath, we revisit everybody’s favourite topic: REBOOTS! That is, everyone except Andrew. Much like retcons and event books, reboots are a staple of the comics industry. They are a complicated endeavour when done right and a dumpster fire when handled incorrectly. Of all the types of reboots out there, “Ground Up Reboots” are the hardest to pull off.

What’s a Ground Up Reboot? That’s when you start the character back at zero, throwing away most or all of the previous continuity. We’ve seen it recently with House of X and Buffy The Vampire Slayer. We’ve seen it back in the day with Hawkman. DC and Marvel have done Ground Up Reboots on their entire lines. Crisis on Infinite Earths, The New 52, and the 2015 Secret Wars were all Ground Up Reboots that might as well have been Scorched Earth attempts. The Ultimate Universe at Marvel was an imprint line but it almost replaced the 616 Universe. As previously stated, Ground Up Reboots are just a staple of the business.

Join Andrew and Petula as they look back on the more popular Ground Up Reboots. Some are good. Some are bad. All left their mark on the comics industry. It’s all coming your way on an ALL NEW, ALL DIFFERENT episode of Back Issue Bloodbath.
