  • The Legion of Superheroes

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

This week on Back Issue Bloodbath, Andrew is joined by another guest host: Adam Sikora! Adam is a longtime friend of Andrew’s. He’s also a former contributor to geekhardshow.com. Back in 2016, he provided deep comic book analysis in his column, All Along the Watchtower. Adam joins us this week to provide his knowledge on one of the more strange super teams to come out of the DC Comics pantheon, The Legion of Superheroes.

The Legion of Superheroes first appeared in Adventure Comics #247, all the way back in 1958. They originally debuted as supporting characters from the future for Superboy to pal around with. A group of teenage superheroes from the 30th Century. What’s says “Silver Age Comics” more than that?Shortly after, they proved popular enough to get their own comic series. Over the decades, they’ve had quite the storied yet bizarre history.

Has there been a more retconned super team than The Legion of Superheroes? They’ve been rebooted, revamped, relaunched, reimagined and any other kind of reshaping that can happen to a comic book. Various incarnations of the team have appeared over the past 30 years and each creative team has given it’s own unique spin. Now Brian Michael Bendis has launched his version The Legion of Superheroes, which has caused some fans to scratch their heads and ask, “just who the hell are The Legion of Superheroes, anyway?” Adam answers that question for you and Andrew, who is admittedly not a fan of the Legion.

Join Comic Boy and Literature Lad (two names that could totally be in a Legion comic) for the history of The Legion of Superheroes. Take a listen and you just might learn something. Andrew sure did.

  • The Works of Jason Aaron

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

After a brief hiatus, Back Issue Bloodbath‘s Creator Spotlight RETURNS! This week, we take a look at the works of a writer who’s made his mark on the comics world for the past two decades: Jason Aaron.

Originally discovered during a Marvel talent search in 2001, Jason Aaron has had success at Marvel, Image and Vertigo with gritty stories filled with heart. These days, he’s mainly associated with Thor, but he’s left an impression on a number of characters. He’s had memorable runs on Wolverine, PunisherMAX, Ghostrider, Doctor Strange, Wolverine and the X-Men, and even Star Wars. He’s also produced memorable creator-owned stories like The Other Side, Scalped, Southern Bastards and The Goddamned. The guy’s written some Conan stories as of late too. He knows his way around a bad-ass story. Aaron tells tales about tough guys with heart. That’s tough but fair.

Join Andrew and Sammy as they dissect some of the works of Jason Aaron. We give much love to his Punisher and Wolverine runs. We also show great respect for his beard. If you want to hear more about Aaron’s comic contributions, give Back Issue Bloodbath a listen. It’s good times. You don’t have to take my word for it. Listen right now! Just click the button. You can thank me later.

  • History of Horror Comics

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

Halloween is almost here. So is the end of our Horror theme with the month of October. For our last instalment, we take a look at the rise and fall and rise and fall of Horror comics!

Horror comics first rose to prominence in the aftermath of World War II. Fan attention for costumed superhero had waned and the audience looked for stories with a bit more bite. Horror and Crime comics were the order of the day. Over time, due to outside forces and industry meddling, Horror would see a rapid decline in the 60s, then a return to form in the 70s. The ups and downs of scary comics would not end there as even today, the popularity of horror comes in fits and bursts.

Join Andrew and Sammy as they examine the history of Horror Comics. From the heyday of EC Comics, to Marvel’s Tomb of Dracula, to the modern success of The Walking Dead, we touch on it all. We also discuss the trend of horror seeping into mainstream hero comics like Venom and Spawn. Sit back and enjoy some chills and thrills with us on an ALL NEW Back Issue Bloodbath!

  • Dead of Night Featuring The Man-Thing

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

Things are still scary as we continue our Horror theme for the month of October. This week, we’re looking back at a Marvel MAX miniseries from 2008: Dead of Night featuring The Man-Thing!

Created in 1971 by Roy Thomas and Gerry Conway, The Man-Thing is a creature from the Florida Swamp birthed from an experiment gone wrong. Biochemist Ted Salis and his team were on a mission to recreate the Super-Soldier serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America. But when Ted found out his team were secretly working for A.I.M., his attempt to protect the serum lead to him becoming The Man-Thing. Over the decades, new wrinkles to his story have emerged. The Man-Thing is drawn to fear and all who know fear burn at the touch of the Man-Thing. (That’s not sexual innuendo. It’s actually a part of his origin.)

Over time, Man-Thing’s continuity has become increasingly dense. He is not an easily accessible character. Thankfully, in 2008 Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa put together a straightforward take on Man-Thing that leaned into the horror aspects of the character. This was a whole decade before the writer would bring horror to Riverdale. Join Andrew and Sammy as they take a look at “a radical re-imagining” of The Man-Thing in Dead of Night!

  • Night Moves

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

    Text

It’s October! That’s the month where we like to scare ourselves with tales of horror! We here at Back Issue Bloodbath would like to help you out with that by reviewing a comic that’s the perfect blend of horror and noir: Night Moves.

Don’t get this comic confused with the Bob Seager tune. (Sorry if that song is playing in your head right now. That was not my intent.) Written by VJ and Justin Boyd with art by Clay McCormick, Night Moves is the story of small-time Vegas grifter Chris Dundee. A chance confrontation at a bar with a pack of shotgun-toting priests leads to a tangled web of danger and occult. Chris has had his fair share of dust-ups with hoods and bangers on the strip. This time, he’s way out of his element. He’s never had to face off with a demon before. He may not again if he ends up dead.

Join Andrew and Sammy as they take a look at the five issue IDW miniseries Night Moves and let you know if you should put the moves on getting the trade. If you like crime and horror in equal measure, you might want to hear what we have to say. It’s all coming your way on an all new Back Issue Bloodbath.

A special thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for providing a copy of Night Moves, available now. Pick up yours today.
