  • The Works of Len Wein

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

On this week’s Back Issue Bloodbath, we take some time for another creator spotlight episode! Since the last one focused on Marv Wolfman, it’s only fair that this time round we focus on his late, great writing pal, Len Wein!

Probably known best as the writer who co-created Wolverine and Swamp Thing, Len Wein made major contributions to the way comics were written in the 1970s and 80s. His work as an editor was just as important as his writing as he helped usher in the Bronze Age style of comics. He’s also the guy who brought us the “international” version of the X-Men in Giant Sized X-Men #1. He co-created Storm, Nightcrawler and Colossus. It safe to say that his effect on the comic industry can still be felt today.

Join Andrew and Sammy as they look back on the many great works of Len Wein. From his days as teenage comic writer to his time as a respected editor, it’s all covered here. There’s also a strange little aside about the best-left-forgotten late 90s band Len. (What else would you expect on this show?) It’s all coming your way on an ALL NEW episode of Back Issue Bloodbath. Give it a listen and enjoy your life.

  • Moonshadow by Dematteis and Muth

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

It’s always a great feeling when they finally re-release a long out of print series in a new hardcover. It gives a whole new generation of readers the chance to discover a classic story. Such is the case with the recent release of Moonshadow: The Definitive Edition from Dark Horse Comics. Written by J.M. DeMatteis with artwork from Jon J. Muth, this 12 issue Sci-Fi Fantasy Epic has had quite the publication history.

Originally published by Epic in the mid to late 1980s, the series would be re-released almost a decade later through Vertigo Comics. A couple of years after that, a graphic novella called Farewell, Moonshadow was also printed under the Vertigo Imprint to wrap up the series. Now, over 20 years later, the entire series and novella have been collected by Dark Horse. That is a journey fitting for a story about one boy’s journey across the cosmos into manhood.

Take a listen to the latest Back Issue Bloodbath to hear Andrew and Sammy’s review of Moonshadow. Is this another fine piece of fantasy? The answer is waiting for you on an ALL NEW Bloodbath!

  • Nightwing Knight Terrors

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

In the history of the DC Universe, there isn’t a more hopeful hero than Nightwing. Dick Grayson has always been the quintessential masked crimefighter. His wit is sharp. His morals are true. He’s the guy that you hope is protecting your streets. At least, he was.

After a gunshot wound to the head, Ric Grayson isn’t in the hero game anymore. He’s walked away from being Nightwing and is now slummin’ it on the streets of Bludhaven as a homeless cabbie. (No really, he is!) That doesn’t mean that there isn’t a Nightwing. There’s a new hero in town. In fact, there’s a new team in town!

Join Andrew and Sammy as they give their review of Nightwing: Knight Terrors. Written by Fabian Nicieza and Scott Lobdell, the story is steeped in 90s nostalgia. But how much nostalgia is too much nostalgia? Find out on the latest episode of Back Issue Bloodbath!

  • The Green Lantern by Morrison and Sharp

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

If you’ve been listening to Back Issue Bloodbath for a long time now, you already know that Andrew is a big fan of Grant Morrison. Sammy’s a fan as well. When you pair this writer with certain characters, you get magic! Allstar Superman, JLA and New X-Men are great examples of Grant Morrison bringing something to a title that needed it. The same can be said of his current run on Green Lantern with artist Liam Sharp.

Focusing on the “Super Cop” aspect of Hal Jordan’s persona, Morrison’s Green Lantern is part police procedural, part social commentary on the use of authority in the modern world. Whether it’s arresting God Almighty for crimes against the Earth or saving a pocket universe from destruction by using pure force of will, Hal Jordan is the John McClean of the cosmos and it shows. It’s nice to have some bad-ass space-cop stories once again!

Join Andrew and Sammy as they take a look at the legendary lantern’s current adventures. We also discuss the beautiful artwork of Liam Sharp. There’s even an appearance by a giant-sized Green Arrow. Loads of fun is waiting for you on the latest episode of Back Issue Bloodbath.
