  • "Everything you know is a lie!"

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

“Everything you know is a lie!”common comic book trope.

This week on Back Issue Bloodbath, we examine one of the most popular comic tropes of all time! The “everything you know is a lie” trope has fuelled a number of iconic retcons for the past 50 years or more. Sometimes, this device has been used correctly, leading to a new foundation of character growth. Other times, the execution of this element misfires and creates a new set of problems for writers to explain away the best they can. From the Saga of the Swamp Thing reveal to the Weapon X Files to The Real Truth About Krypton, this revelation remains a tricky beast.

Join Andrew and Sammy as they dive deep into the history of some of Comics’ most famous “Everything You Know Is a Lie” moments. We look at not only the stories themselves but the reasons that led to them. We also talk about some of the players involved. It’s a deconstruction of one of the biggest tricks of comic book writing! Give us a listen to find out the truth behind the lies on an all new Back Issue Bloodbath!

  • Marv Wolfman

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

This week on Bloodbath, we take a look back on the storied career of one of the best writers in comic history: Marv Wolfman. In the 70s, Marv was a Marvel guy! He took the horror comic Tomb of Dracula to the top of the sales charts and introduced the world to Blade. He also had a hand in creating both Bullseye and Black Cat. Not a bad track record. But Marv wasn’t done there. In the 1980s, Marv would jump to DC Comics and team up with artist George Perez to give the House of Ideas a run for its money. They relaunched The Teen Titans as the The New Teen Titans and created another sales giant. They would then relaunch the entire DC Universe with the event book Crisis on Infinite Earths!

Join Andrew and Sammy as they take a look at the many great comic works of Marv Wolfman. He got his start as a teenager along side best bud Len Wein. He went on to become a comic legend with decades of hits! Listen as we celebrate another icon of the industry on an all new Back Issue Bloodbath.

  • Black Canary and Zatanna Bloodspell

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

What do magic, a canary cry, fishnets and Paul Dini all have in common? They’re each a part of the original graphic novel Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell. Released in 2014, this one-shot hardcover told an out-of-continuity tale pairing Dinah Lance and Zatanna Zatara to solve a magic themed crime caper. A number of women involved in a heist gone wrong from a year before are ending up dead. Canary and Zatanna have to get to the bottom of this mystery before more blood is spilled. But this blood has been spelled! What? (That made a bit more sense in my head.) A Bloodspell ties this all together.

Join Andrew and Sammy as they take a look back on this graphic novel five years on. Written by the award winning Paul Dini and drawn by Joe Quinones, the dark subject matter of this story is balanced out by some fun action and colourful characters. Does this balance work on the page? Find out what we think on the latest episode of Back Issue Bloodbath. To quote Sammy, “It’s magic, baby!” So what are you waiting for? NETSIL OT TI THGIR WON!*

  • Cover by Bendis and Mack

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

This week on Bloodbath, Sammy’s back! We bid farewell to guest host month and welcome back Sammy Younan for some fun comic book analysis and shenanigans. He returns just in time to join Andrew for a look at Cover, a miniseries from the minds of Brian Michael Bendis and David Mack!

Released under the Jinxworld imprint (Bendis’s creator-owned line at DC Comics), Cover is the story of artist Max Field and his unlikely entry into the world of espionage. Who better to be a spy than a comic creator? They travel around the world to conventions on the regular. It’s an ordinary practice. And that’s why Max is the best choice for a job in the intelligence community. It’s an incredible tale with some amazing artwork that stands out as some of the best that Mack has ever produced.

Join Andrew and Sammy as they look at this miniseries and discuss the reinvigoration of Bendis’s career. There’s even talk of Brian’s near brush with death! It’s all waiting for you on the latest episode of Back Issue Bloodbath. This mission, if you choose to accept it, is to listen to the episode RIGHT NOW! Don’t blow your cover!

  • Did Franchise Expansion Ruin The Avengers Comic?

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

It’s the final episode of Guest Host Month as Andrew and his brother (and FUN FAIR co-host), Nathan Young, talk about a comic franchise near and dear to their hearts: The Avengers! It’s no secret that over the past 15 years The Avengers went from just another super team to mainstream icons! The movies had a lot to do with that. But the comics went from a single title to a eclectic line of books in various shapes and sizes. That begs the question, “Did this Franchise expansion ruin The Avengers?” Andrew and Nathan attempt to find the answer.

Starting at the birth of New Avengers in 2005, Andrew and Nathan follow the timeline to the introduction of additional Avengers titles, charting from two titles, to four titles, to seven titles. They look at the commercial success and the creative merit of each book and share their findings.

If you’re a fan of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, you might be interested in this short history lesson on the evolution of this super team and it’s impact on the comics market. Even if you’re not, it’s an interesting look on the effects of overexposure on the comic racks. Take a listen. You might learn something on an ALL NEW Back Issue Bloodbath.
