  • Bad Reputations

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

It’s always important to protect your rep. But what if you have a reputation for being an ass? There are a few comic creators, very successful ones, that are known for some particularly bad behavior. If you’re caught doing this a number of times, you’ll always have that reputation in the eyes of the fans. Some creators would want to get away from bad press. Others don’t care, as long as they’re still making money. Does anybody truly care about their bad reputations?

This week, Sammy presents the case for five comic creators – Todd McFarlane, Salvidor Larroca, Dan Slott, John Byrne and Neal Adams – to see if they’ve truly earned their bad reputations. Andrew gives his two cents on each as well. Sammy will present the evidence and the pair will decide what category they fall under from three choices:

    * Classy – The creator is victim of a false narrative.* Gassy – Depends on what day of the week you bump into them.* Assy – The Creator has rightfully earned their bad reputation.

Find out where each of these creators fall on this very scientific scale. Andrew even shares a couple of stories about meeting some of these creators at conventions. Take a listen as Back Issue Bloodbath brings you another classy episode all about Bad Reputations!

  • Fortune and Glory by Brian Michael Bendis

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

Brian Michael Bendis is one of the most prolific comic creators of the modern era. After a long and successful run at the House of Ideas, he now makes his home at the Distinguished Competition. It’s hard to believe that at one time, he was an indie darling best known for crime comics. But that was Bendis in a nutshell back in the late 90s. His work even caught the eye of Hollywood back in the day. None of his comics were every made into movies, but they definitely were optioned for them. Which brings us to our comic this week: Fortune and Glory!

Fortune and Glory: A True Hollywood Comic Book Story was written and drawn by Bendis and released as a three part series and then graphic novel by Oni Press in 2000. The comic is a retelling of Bendis’s own experiences in the world of development limbo at various Hollywood studios. Now back in print at Jinxworld, we thought it was the right time to re-visit this now classic funny book. Or in Sammy’s case, read it for the first time.

Join Andrew and Sammy as they delve into Brian Michael Bendis’s cartooning days with their review of Fortune and Glory. It’s coming your way on an all new Bloodbath!

A special thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for providing a copy of Fortune and Glory: A True Hollwood Comic Book Story, available now. Pick up yours today.

  • Catwoman by Joelle Jones

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

If there is a character that has Batman’s number, it’s Catwoman. Literally! Selina Kyle is without a doubt, one of the coolest characters in the DCU. But even cool cats get the blues. Ever since Selina left Bruce, she’s been living pretty rough. But if living rough is the price to pay for your own series, I don’t think she’s complaining.

Written and drawn by Joelle Jones (with additional artwork by Fernando Blanco), the latest Catwoman ongoing series started up last Fall. Selina has left Gotham and taken up residence in the coastal city of Villa Hermosa. She just wants to be left alone. The local crime family, headed up by the governor’s wife, Raina Creel, is not interested in leaving her be. They drag her into a fight she didn’t ask for. She might not have asked for this fight, but she’s damn sure gonna win it.

Take a listen to the latest Back Issue Bloodbath to hear Andrew and Sammy’s thoughts on Copycats, the first story arc of the current Catwoman series. It’s the purrrrfect way to spend your time. As a bonus, Andrew also reveals the type of Batman story he actually likes. Now you have to listen!

  • Avengers Forever

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

It’s safe to say that Avengers: Endgame is ripping up the box office right now. It’s an epic that combines superheroes, deep character moments, big battles and time travel! That brings a certain comic series to mind that packs a healthy dose of all of the above: Avengers Forever!

Published in 1999, Avengers Forever was a maxi-series that revolved around Rick Jones and the potential of the human race. The Time Keepers and Immortas wanted to kill Jones. Kang and The Supreme Intelligence, for their own selfish reasons, wanted to keep him alive. The only thing that stood in the way of Rick Jones and certain doom were seven Avengers from throughout time. Kurt Busiek and Carlos Pacheco created a masterpiece that dived deep into Avengers lore.

This week on Bloodbath, Andrew and Sammy take a closer look at Avengers Forever and it’s long lasting impact on the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Find out why Andrew thinks it is the Avengers epic to end all epics. It packs a lot of story into just 12 issues. There is also much praise to the continuity gods on Sammy’s part. It’s all coming your way on an ALL NEW edition of Back Issue Bloodbath.

  • An Interview with Steve Englehart

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

Last month, Andrew and Sammy went “on the road”! In reality, they just went down the street to the Metro Toronto Convention Centre to attend Toronto Comicon 2019! Three fun-filled days of comics and more! While at the show, they got to chat with a few comic creators. These are their stories.

This week, you get to hear Andrew’s sit down interview with legendary comic writer Steve Englehart. There are many great creators who have worked on the Avengers. Many have left their mark. But it was Steve Englehart’s work on the title in the 1970s that took this team from a Justice League rip-off to the backbone of the Marvel Universe. Introducing a bit of personality to his characters, strengthening the charisma of Scarlet Witch and Moondragon, and introducing new members like Mantis and Hellcat attracted new readers to the book and left a lasting impression on the series.

Listen as Andrew talks with Steve Englehart about his contributions to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, his work on Doctor Strange and Shang-Chi, and the differences between writing for comics and other mediums. It’s all coming you way on an ALL NEW Back Issue Bloodbath.

Thanks to Toronto Comicon for having Back Issue Bloodbath (and Geek Hard) at the show. We had a lot of fun covering this event as always. Looking forward to next year!
