  • The Umbrella Academy

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

Seven children with super powers raised by an eccentric millionaire to “save the world”. It does not get more comic booky than that. The Umbrella Academy, created by Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba and distributed by Dark Horse Comics, is a presentation of silver age sensibilities seen through the self aware and cynical lens of modern day. The first two stories, Apocalypse Suite and Dallas, were release a decade ago and garnered quite the cult following.

Now, The Umbrella Academy is popular as ever with a new comic series wrapping up soon and a Netflix show available for streaming. So what can one expect from a typical Umbrella Academy tale? How about heroes and villains, talking primates, time travel, assassination attempts, conspiracies and covert operations, murder, betrayal, and more! It’s safe to say that you can expect just about anything. But is that a good thing?

Join Andrew and Sammy as they take a look at all three UA story arcs and weigh out the good and the bad of these adventures. There’s a lot to unpack here so strap in for a long look at some crazy stuff. In other words, expect what you always get from us: a lot of talk and tomfoolery. It’s all waiting for you in the latest Back Issue Bloodbath!

  • Brand Loyalty vs. Good Stories

A wise man once said, “You gotta know when to hold ’em, know when to fold ’em, know when to walk away, know when to run.” He was talking about playing cards but this wisdom can also be applied to comic collecting as well. This week on Bloodbath, we examine the pros and cons of brand loyalty as opposed to collecting only the stories you enjoy.

For decades, comic collecting has had it’s “completists”. Those collectors that continue to buy certain titles or characters no matter the creative team or the level of quality. A Super-Fan who buys through good times and bad. Over the past 20 to 30 years, this breed of fanatic has become more rare thanks to factors like re-numbering, event book fatigue, variant covers and swift cancellations. Which begs the question, “Are there any completists left?” or better yet, “Is that a good thing for comics or a bad thing?”

Join Andrew and Sammy as they take a look at this facet of comic collecting. They also talk about their own brand loyalty fazes and the comics that broke them of their habits. It’s all coming your way on the latest Back Issue Bloodbath!

  • The Works of Ann Nocenti

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

This week on Bloodbath, we bring you another Creator Spotlight. For this one, we’re talking about a comic writer who’s also been an editor, journalist, teacher and filmmaker: Ann Nocenti! Probably best known for her work in the pages of Daredevil, Ann has had a career in comics spanning almost forty years!

Join Andrew and Sammy as they take a look through the many books Ann Nocenti has written. It’s a journey from her early days at Marvel to her current work at Dark Horse. We cover her work on Spider-Woman, Longshot, and Daredevil, as well as her New 52 return on Green Arrow and MORE! We go especially in depth on a pair of Daredevil issues that Andrew still holds up as two of his favourites! One takes place at Christmas and features a daredevil of a different kind. The other focuses on a down on his luck, blue collar worker who takes the law into his own hands. Neither are a conventional DD story and that Ann’s specialty.

We even check out her latest work on both the creator-owned story The Seeds (for Berger Books) and a Captain America story she wrote for the first issue of the new Marvel Comics Presents. It’s all coming you way on the latest episode of Back Issue Bloodbath!

  • Immortal Hulk

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

This week on Bloodbath, things get a bit scary as Andrew and Sammy take a look at a series currently published by The House of Ideas that dips into the horror realm. The book in question is Immortal Hulk. While Bruce Banner has always been the big green monster in the Marvel Universe, his comics have usually skewed more towards superhero tales rather than horror. Not so with this comic from Al Ewing, Joe Bennett and friends. Here’s the official synopsis:

HORROR HAS A NAME. You’d never notice the man. He doesn’t like to be noticed. He’s quiet. Calm. Never complains. If someone were to walk up and shoot him in the head… all he’d do is die. Until night falls. And someone else gets up again. The man’s name is Banner. The horror is THE IMMORTAL HULK.

This series was on a LOT of “Best of” lists at the end of 2018. It was also Sammy’s pick for the best comic of last year! Take a listen as he and Andrew dissect the first 12 issues of The Immortal Hulk, a book that’s been considered by many critics as the best comic that Marvel has put out in years. Will Andrew agree with their assessment? Find out on an ALL NEW episode of Back Issue Bloodbath.

  • The Deadly Class EXTRA!

This week we change things up a bit! Instead of just talking about a comic, we’re talking about a comic, a television show, and even featuring an interview! It’s all part of our episode on Deadly Class!

Longtime listeners of the show know that we don’t usually revisit a comic we’ve covered on the show before, unless it’s to break down a specific story arc. We actually did an episode on Deadly Class already all the way back in 2016 when Andrew hosted the show with Gavin Stephens. Take a listen to that episode if you want hear our thoughts on the first 23 issues of the Deadly Class series. This episode is the sequel to that one as Andrew and Sammy give their review of the first 3 episodes of the Deadly Class television series on SYFY. But wait, there’s MORE!

This episode also features an interview from the Geek Hard Vault! Back in 2015, at Fan Expo Canada, Andrew conducted an interview with Deadly Class Artist Wes Craig. The full interview has not been released until this very episode! You’ll get to hear his thoughts on the characters, working with writer Rick Remender, and MORE! If you’re a fan of Deadly Class, either the comic or the television show, this episode is for you.
