  • Harley's Little Black Book

Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.

It’s hard to argue that the Harley Quinn has become one of the most popular DC Characters around. Over the past 5 years, she’s had a meteoric rise from Joker’s sidekick to a top selling solo anti-hero. This is no small part due to the work of Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti. This dynamic duo’s work throughout both The New 52 and Rebirth has made Harley the hero she is today. In fact, their run was so popular, it sparked a team up comic spinoff: Harley’s Little Black Book!

This six issue bi-mothly series featured Harley Quinn teaming up with the biggest heroes DC had to offer. Superman, Wonder Woman and Green Lantern were all featured. There’s even an issue with Zatana. Lobo also shows up for some reason. The book also featured a number of great artists including Neal Adams, Joseph Michael Linsner, Billy Tucci and more!

Take a listen as Andrew and Sammy give their review of Harley’s Little Black Book. Sammy’s not known to like zany characters, so this should be interesting.

Happy Holidays, folks! We’re just a few days away from Christmas, so it seems like the perfect time to get in the spirit with a Christmas-themed comic. There are some that don’t usually like Holiday-themed comics (Sammy). They find them too touchy-feely and not enough kicky-punchy. For them, we present the perfect comic to fill their needs while still bringing the feels. This also happens to be a comic where Santa is total bad-ass. The comic in question is Klaus from Boom Studios.
Written by Grant-Fuckin-Morrison and drawn by Dan Mora, Klaus is Santa Claus Year One! Released as a miniseries through 2015 and 2016, it tells the origin story of Klaus. Here’s the official Boom Synopsis:
He’s a myth. A legend. He’s loved worldwide by children and adults alike . . . but does anyone truly know the origins of Santa Claus? Set in a dark fantastic past of myth and magic, Klaus tells the origin story of Santa Claus. It’s the tale of one man and his wolf against a totalitarian state and the ancient evil that sustains it.
Find out what Sammy thinks of one of Andrew’s favourite comics starring the world’s most famous toy-maker. It’s the perfect way to pass the time while you wait for Santa land on your roof and come down your chimney.

  • Powers (Who Killed Retro Girl?)
Back in the year 2000, comic creator Brian Michael Bendis was a hot, new player in the world of comics. He had had minor successes in the late nineties with a series of crime-themed tales released through Image comics, such as Torso and Fire. It would still be a short while before he would blow up on the Marvel scene with his runs on Daredevil and Ultimate Spider-Man. At the time, Bendis, along with artist Michael Avon Oeming, was hard at work delivering a ripping comic yarn that mixed crime and superheroes alike. That series was Powers.
Powers was a classic police procedural that focused on crimes involving people with special powers. The first tale was a 6 issue story that set the tone for the series and would continue to haunt Christian Walker, the protagonist of the piece, for a long, long time. Who Killed Retro Girl? was an excellent “Whodunnit” that also set up the entire Powers universe. This week on Bloodbath, Andrew and Sammy take a look back on this now classic story. This is the first time Sammy has read Powers. For Andrew, this is one of many re-reads of the book. Find out what each thinks of this Bendis comic that’s is in print once again through the Jinxworld imprint.
A special thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for providing a copy of Powers: Book One, available now. Pick up yours today.

  • The Works of Roger Stern
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
This week, we bring you another episode recorded ON THE ROAD. Andrew and Sammy were guests at the Whitby Comic Arts Festival (#WhitCAF) on Saturday, November 17th, at the Whitby Public Library. Surrounded by some amazing indie comic creators as well as a plethora of comic fans, it seemed like the perfect place to record a creator spotlight episode. This time around, they look at the works of the one and only Roger Stern.
Not too many creators can boast being a driving creative force for both Spider-Man and Superman. Roger Stern has that honor. Writing some of the most famous and beloved stories starring Peter Parker, like Nothing Can Stop The Juggernaut and The Kid Who Collected Spider-Man, Stern defined Spidey in the 1980s. Then in the 90s, he moved over to the Distinguished Competition and wrote iconic tales for The Man of Tomorrow. He even had a hand in killing the guy!
For some creators, that would be enough to hang your hat on. But Stern also had memorable runs on Captain America and The Avengers to boot. He’s also had some amazing collaborations with the likes of John Byrne and Kurt Busiek. A legend of the comic industry, Roger Stern’s contributions to the medium are still loved and respected by fans to this day. Join Andrew and Sammy as they look back on the works of Roger Stern.
