  • Days of Future Past
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
This week on a special episode of Bloodbath, Andrew and Sammy take a look back on one of the greatest X-Men comics of all time: Days of Future Past. The swan song of Chris Claremont and John Byrne’s legendary run on Uncanny X-Men, this story further cemented the duo’s legacy. It also set up a number of characters and plots within the world of Xavier’s merry mutants for decades. The effects of Days of Future Past are felt in the writing of the X-Men to this very day. And it’s only two issues in length.
Join Andrew and Sammy as they dissect this beloved story and break down it’s lasting esteem within the heart of fans. Recorded on the road, the guys put this episode together in the heart of the Whitby Comic Arts Festival (WhitCAF), which went down on Saturday, November 17th at the Whitby Public Library. A special thanks to the WhitCAF staff for having us.
Also, to make this episode extra special, Andrew reads a message from the one and only Joe Quesada. Two weeks ago, we released an episode celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Marvel Knights Imprint. Joe Q was kind enough to give that episode a listen and provide his commentary on it. Be sure to listen to the end of the episode to hear him clarify a few things.
It’s all waiting for you on our Days of Future Past episode of Back Issue Bloodbath!

  • Continuity vs. History

    Continuity

    * the unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time.
    * the maintenance of continuous action and self-consistent detail in the various scenes of a story.

    History

    * the study of past events, particularly in human affairs.
    * the whole series of past events connected with someone or something.

This week on Back Issue Bloodbath, we take a look at Continuity and History. The word “continuity” has been used many times on our show. Half those times, “history” would be better suited. History is a period of time that cannot be changed. Continuity is a living organism in the world of comics that can change over time.
At times, it’s used to present a new facet of a character, opening them to a different world of stories. Iceman recently experienced this by embracing his homosexuality. Other times, it’s sloppily changed and the new information does not fit within the character’s story. Gwen Stacy having an affair with Norman Osborn is a prime example. Good or bad, continuity is not an exact science.
Take a listen as Andrew and Sammy dissect the battle of Continuity vs. History. There’s no clear winner as the fight rages on! Take a listen and enjoy. You just might learn something.

  • A Marvel Knights Retrospective!
20 years ago, in the fall of 1998, Marvel Knights was born. An imprint at Marvel headed up by Joe Quesada and Jimmy Palmiotti, the focus was to take lesser characters and give them a new, unique style. Whether it was giving Daredevil a high profile writer in Kevin Smith, or giving the Punisher a new supernatural spin, they took a lot of risks. Some of those risks paid off and brought new audiences to the House of Ideas. Daredevil, Black Panther, Black Widow, The Inhumans, Marvel Boy and The Sentry all had success under the Marvel Knights Banner. The Punisher would eventually be a hit as well thanks to Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Overall, it’s an imprint that fans remember with fondness.
Join us as Andrew and Sammy take look back on the first 3 years of Marvel Knights, going over the hits and misses. They also explain how the brand went on to change some customs not just at Marvel, but in the industry in general, and how this all lead to Joe Q moving up the editorial ladder right the EIC chair. It’s a fun walk down memory lane as we remember some of our favourite MK books. Take a listen and enjoy.

  • Hey Kids! Comics! by Howard Chaykin
This week on Bloodbath, we take a look at an Image Title that gives a behind-the-scenes look into the world of comics. Hey Kids! Comics! is written and drawn by Howard Chaykin and is his self-described love letter to the funny book business. Following three fictitious characters through the 40s, 50s, 60s and even the early 2000s, the series gives a glimpse into what it was like to be a creator in the industry. Chaykin’s take on the politics and business practices of the time are spot on and the characters who are stand-ins and amalgams of famous creators from the past are interesting and intriguing.
Take a listen as Andrew and Sammy review the first three issues of Hey Kids! Comics! Find out what they think of the series and hear their thoughts on who each of the characters represent. As comic fans, the guys always like a look into “how the sausage gets made”. You’ll also hear an excerpt from an interview that took place on Geek Hard earlier this year where Chaykin talked about the series and set the record straight that this is not a “poison pen letter” comic.  It’s all coming your way on a brand new Back Issue Bloodbath.

  • The Silencer by Dan Abnett and John Romita Jr.
This week on Bloodbath, we take a look at The Silencer, one of the series that’s part of DC’s New Age of Heroes imprint. Written by Dan Abnett and featuring artwork from John Romita Jr., Viktor Bogdonovic and Patch Zircher, Silencer takes place in the criminal underground of the DC Universe. It’s a highly confusing world of double crosses and lots of blood. Check out DC’s take on the book:
She’s one of the DC Universe’s deadliest assassins… and you’ve never heard of her. Super-strong, highly trained, armed with devastating and stealthy meta-human abilities, the Silencer is virtually invincible. Or at least she was. After decades as Leviathan’s chief assassin, Honor Guest put in her time and managed to get out with her skin intact. Now she lives a normal life with a normal family in a normal house on a normal street. But the past has come back to haunt her in the form of her old employer and a deadly new mission… and Talia Al Ghul won’t take no for an answer.
Take a listen to find out what Andrew and Sammy think of this new series.
A special thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for providing a copy of The Silencer Vol. 1: Code of Honor, available now. Pick up yours today.
