  • Cringe-Worthy Comics
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
You ever read a comic and immediately think, “What the hell were they thinking? Why didn’t an editor stop this from going through?” You ever go back to an older story and think that? Did it make you uneasy that this idea or story ever made it to print? This episode of Back Issue Bloodbath is for you! Join us as we relive some of the most cringe-worthy moments in comics. From the whole “Did Carol Danvers give birth to her own rapist?” fiasco of the early 80s to major missteps with Starfire during the New 52, there are plenty of moments that have made us cringe over the years. Some for obvious reasons. Others, you have to really think about it.
Take a listen as Andrew and Sammy each share 5 cringe-worthy comic stories or moments from the long and recent past. Think you can guess which moments made our list? You’ll find out soon enough. There’s even a mention of the almost forgotten Marvel Swimsuit Specials from the early nineties. Try not to cringe too much as you listen to this episode. We hope you don’t get as many flashbacks to bad stories and poor decisions as we did putting it together. (Sometimes, reading comics is hard.) Enjoy?

  • The Works of Tim Sale
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
This week, in our creator spotlight, we take a look at the comic contributions of Tim Sale! An amazing artist who’s known for some iconic stories, Tim’s body of work in the comics industry is small in quantity. But he makes up for that in quality, having worked on all the big characters in mainstream comics. From Batman to Superman to Spider-Man to Captain America, Sale’s work with writer Jeph Loeb is legendary. It’s also worth noting that a decade ago, his work broke into the mainstream in a big way as it was featured on the Heroes television series. It’s safe to say that Tim has made a lasting impact in comics over the past few decades.
Take a listen as Andrew and Sammy talk about the memorable artwork of Tim Sale. We also end up talking about colour which is ironic as Tim is colour blind. The irony continues as some of his most famous works have colours in their name – Daredevil: Yellow, Spider-Man: Blue, Hulk: Gray….etc. (I don’t think Sammy knew about Tim’s condition at the start of the episode ’cause he sure goes on about colour for awhile.) It’s all coming you way on the latest installment of your favourite comic book podcast, Back Issue Bloodbath! Enjoy.

  • Analog by Gerry Duggan
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
This week on Bloodbath, we focus on Analog, the 2018 Image comic series from Gerry Duggan and David O’Sullivan. I could explain it to you but I would never do the Image Comics synopsis justice. So here it is:
Five years from now: the security of the internet has been totally destroyed. Secrets are no longer sent over the web, they’re entrusted to armed couriers called ‘Ledger Men,’ like human punching-bag Jack McGinnis. He’s got a gun in one hand and a briefcase handcuffed to the other. Danger lurks around every corner, and Jack has to watch his back-because he had a part in the cyber attack that changed the world. Get in on the ground floor of this new ongoing series and thrill as we slam Jack’s fist into the faces of spies, mercs, fascists, and eventually less punchable adversaries like a very grumpy artificial intelligence.
Take a listen as Andrew and Sammy give their thoughts on the first story arc of this noir tale set in the not-too-distant future. Is this one of the best new comics of the year? Maybe. You’ll have to give the episode a listen to find out. (We’re making you work for it.)

  • The "TROUBLE" Experiment
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and a special guest as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
Is a story bad because it’s truly bad or because we know how it effects a certain character’s continuity? That’s the experiment for this week’s episode of Back Issue Bloodbath as Andrew invites podcaster Dearbhla Trainor to join him for this episode. Dearbhla had never read a comic book before this experiment. Andrew gave her a comic story that was universally reviled by comics fans from all over to see if it’s as bad we all think it is. The story in question is 2003’s Trouble.
Written by Mark Millar with art by Terry and Rachel Dodson, Trouble was the brainchild of former Marvel president Bill Jemas. It was Bill’s idea to introduce a new wrinkle in the origin story of Peter Parker by showing just how his Uncle Ben and Aunt May first met. It was also meant to reintroduce romance comics, a staple of business during the Silver Age, to the direct market. The book flopped hard. Listen as Andrew interviews Dearbhla and gets an unbiased opinion on the merits of Trouble.
Will she hate it just as much as Spider-Man fans did? Or will she enjoy it for the youthful tale of love and sex that it is? Take a listen as we get into Trouble!

  • Captain Cold
Welcome friends to Back Issue Bloodbath, a comics-centric podcast presented by Geek Hard. Join hosts Andrew Young and Sammy Younan as they get down and dirty in the four-colour world of comic books, focusing on classic stories, new issues, comic creators and hot button topics.
This week, we do things a little differently. Instead of dissecting a comic story or famous creator, we’re going to look at a specific character through various eras and retcons. We’ve only done this twice before on the show: way back in episode 23 with Daredevil and then again in episode 50 with Luke Cage. It’s been awhile, that’s for sure. Both of these episodes were even before Sammy officially joined the show! We were due for an episode like this for quite some time. Without further ado, this week’s episode is about the one and only Captain Cold!
Probably the most famous of the Flash’s rogues, Captain Cold was created by John Broome and Carmine Infantino back in the Silver Age as a criminal who specialized in slowing the speedster down with his cold ray. His early stories were quite goofy as they relied on mirages and a lack of understanding on how mirages actually worked. As time went on, Cold would become an uneasy ally of Wally West and even a straight up hero/bounty hunter. Eventually, Geoff Johns would get his hands on him and make him into a credible bad-ass super villain. But there would be many bumps in the road to get there. Take a listen as Sammy and Andrew peel back the layers of this complex character from DC Comics.
A special thanks to Penguin Random House Canada for providing a copy of Flash Rogues: Captain Cold, available now. Pick up yours today.
