  • Twin Films: Dante's Peak vs Volcano

We’re back with the third installment in the twin films series, and it’s gonna be lit (see what I did there?)This week we’re going back one year to 1997 and exploring two movies about coping with an active volcano in your neighborhood. It’s the accidental horror movie Volcano vs. Detective Harry Dalton in Dante’s Peak.

While we’re on the subject, what is it with the late 90s and disaster movies? Was it impending Y2K anxiety? Was everything going so well in the world that folks had nothing better to do than dream up disaster stories? That’s for another day.

As for our guest, our day one homie Eric Roberts did such an awesome job last week, we invited him right back to watch these movies with us. We share our thoughts on topics such as heroes emerging from rubble and more examples of characters making the ultimate sacrifice to save others. Sit back, crack a beer and join us on the back porch as we discuss who coped better, Pierce Brosnan or Tommy Lee Jones?

  • Twin Films: Armageddon vs Deep Impact

We’re back with the second installment in the twin films series, and boy is it a big one. This time around we’re going to be looking at two films from 1998 that are both about coping with a comet. That’s right! It’s Armageddon and Deep Impact y’all.

For this episode we’re joined by our good friend Eric Roberts, one of our day one homies, who helps us break down the comparative size of the comets and sacrifices for young love. Sit back, grab the popcorn and join us for this discussion on some classic movies from our youth.

  • Twin Films: Twister vs Night of the Twisters

This week, we’re doing the first installment in a series exploring the Hollywood phenomenon of “Twin Films”. Did you ever notice how sometimes, there seem to be two movies with the exact same premise, that come out very close to one another? Like how Deep Impact and Armageddon came out less than two months apart in 1998. Well, that’s what this is.

In this first installment, we’ll be taking a look at tornado movies from 1996. We’re analyzing Twister featuring Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt and pitting it against Night of the Twisters featuring Devon Sawa. Ultimately, we’re trying to decide which movie did it better.

We’re joined this week by Sara Senecal, a professional dancer with the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company Oh and she’s co-host Andrew Beam’s lovely wife. Stop in to hear her make wild assumptions about these movies that are not based in reality, but are quite entertaining to hear.

  • Top 5 Hip-Hop Songs: '88 Edition (Part II)

Last week, we discussed the importance of 1988 in hip hop culture, both in the way it evolved musically and how it provided a realistic portrayal of life in the inner cities.

In part one, we discussed Slick Rick’s “Children Story”, N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton”, and Boogie Down Productions’ “My Philosophy”. This week we’re picking up where we left off and will be finishing out our top fives.

We’re joined again by Steve Tyson, a.k.a. Ellect, who shares his expertise with us. Check out his new album Intellectual Property, out now wherever you get your music.

  • Top 5 Hip-Hop Songs: '88 Edition (Part I)

This week, we continue our journey through the history of hip hop music by exploring the top five songs from some of the most important years. During the last installment, we explored 1994, a year where Nas and The Notorious B.I.G. announced themselves to the world. This time around, we asked our guest Steve Tyson, a.k.a. Ellect, which year he wanted to do. He immediately said 1988.

1988 was a hugely important year for hip hop because it’s the year when it started to garner attention from the mainstream media. And while it wasn’t always discussed in the most positive light back then, the fear and paranoia surrounding it only made it that much more popular. In this episode, we’ll talk about all that and more as we discuss 1988 and begin to reveal our top fives. Stop in next week when we’ll finish out our lists.

And a quick reminder, our guest, Ellect, is dropping his album Intellectual Property this Saturday February 13th. Check it out on Spotify, Tidal, Bandcamp, or wherever you get your music!

Today’s episode is the first half of a conversation exploring the top five songs of 1994. This year was a seminal year in hip hop history as it saw releases from so many of the genre’s biggest artists, including the debuts of Notorious B.I.G. and Nas.

We’re joined by our good friend Steve Tyson, a.k.a. Ellect, who helps us break down the best songs from this year and he brings along a top five list of his own. Ellect also has new music of his own coming out; his debut album, Intellectual Property, which he both wrote and produced, is dropping February 13th. • The 1996 Fictional Presidential Election

Inspired by Chris Ryan from the Ringer, we’ll be discussing fictional presidents from movies and television shows. We’ll be looking at the era from 1996-1999 to figure out which fictional president would best serve the fictional United States.

We’re joined on this episode by our good friend James Nani, a tax policy reporter for Law 360. Join us as we discuss the policies and actions of the presidents from the greatest era of movie presidents!

  • Top 5 MMA Fights of 2020

Sure, we spend a lot of our time talking about movies and music, but we enjoy sports, too.

Beam is obsessed with mixed martial arts, and Corey politely obliges his weird fascination with violence. And while 2020 was a weird year for sports in general, there were some really amazing moments in MMA.

Listen in as we discuss and rank some of the best wars that took place inside of the cage and give praise to the fighters who participated in them. Because we sure as hell couldn’t do what these athletes do.

    I mean, we played soccer...

  • Top 5 Albums of 2020: Part II

This week’s episode is a continuation of last week’s conversation about the best music of 2020. Ya know, I never understood all the end of year review stuff coming out during mid-December. Like, the year isn’t over, are we right? But, we digress.

We’re joined on this episode by Kim Neaton, a local music aficionado who worked a DJ at EQX and currently works in the local live music industry with Greg Bell at Gutherie/Bell Productions. Then Beam and Corey discuss their own personal favorite records from the past 12 months (well, kinda. Corey flips the rules as he is one to do).
