Backstage at The Gaffe

It’s August, and that can mean only one thing in the comedy world. The Edinburgh Fringe is upon us and the UK witnesses a comedy exodus up to Scotland for a month. With Harry soon to depart, the pair explore the role that comedy festivals, principally Edinburgh, play in the comedy ecosystem. They also examine the lifestyle of punters and comics at festivals, and how to make the most of your time there.

That's not all: Harry reminisces fringes past and Jacob's tolerance of warmup games finally runs out.

What format shows are on at The Gaffe, what do they offer a venue, and where can we expand on them in the future?

Plus, Harry goes into the art of the roast and the pair workshop a brand new themed character and format live, with a royal twist.

In this debut episode, Harry and Jacob get stuck into their first comedy topic: WIPS, or work-in-progress shows. What does the lifespan of a WIP look like for a comedian? Why are they an important part of the comedy calendar? Did Harry’s recent WIP go well?

Jacob’s buzzing after a recent football result went his way, and shares some insights into how Yorkshire reacts to a sonic boom. Meanwhile, Harry workshops his survival plan for the first day of a hypothetical zombie apocalypse.

What does it take to put together five minutes of quality stand-up material? Harry and Jacob’s second topic covers the club set, or tight five, that is the bread-and-butter of most stand up comedians. Having recently been working on his routine, Harry gives insights into the writing and honing process that goes into creating a bulletproof, and authentic, five minutes of stand-up.

The pair also provide a bit of context as to their roles at The Gaffe Comedy Club, and what they are working on currently to improve the club in these early months.
