PLEASE BE ADVISED: the topics of conversation include warfare, murder, terrorism and a critique of Scientology, together with some swearing (plus plenty of laughter).
John Sweeney is a storyteller and believes "the best stories are the ones Power and Money don't want told." That conviction has driven a successful career, first as an investigative newspaper reporter and then as a BBC Broadcast Journalist, most notably on the Current Affairs flagship, 'Panorama'.
In 2007 video emerged of Sweeney's explosive shouting match against a Church of Scientology official. The confrontation occurred during the production of a Panorama film investigating the organisation and the clips promptly went viral. Sweeney knew that - for better or worse - that incident with stick with him for life.
After an acrimonious departure from the BBC in 2019 Sweeney nosedived to a personal and professional nadir. However the following year a podcast would kickstart a comeback. 'Hunting Ghislaine', his detailed reporting of the murky world inhabited by Ghislaine Maxwell, was one of the most successful podcasts of the year and has supercharged Sweeney.
In this episode he talks through all these events, as well as his childhood and early career influences. John is a great raconteur and admits that his humour is very dark, but very necessary. When you spend your professional life examining some of the bleakest aspects of the human condition you need to laugh to protect yourself - and also enjoy a glass or two of great wine.
