*** This episode covers a sensitive topic: abortion. If this is triggering for you, I recommend you skip to another episode :) ***
I wanted to cover this topic because it is one that divides the population of the planet. Some people are for it and others against it. And that's okay. One thing I do think is important, however, is that we have open discussions about it. And that's exactly what I do with the Aborcyjny Dream Team who are a Poland-based initiative that help educate Polish women about medical abortions. They also spread the positive word that having an abortion is actually ok (they're slogan 'Aborcyjny jest ok' says it all).
Of all the countries in Europe, abortion is indeed a sensitive topic in Poland. There has recently been a change in the law, meaning that women can no longer terminate a pregnancy on the grounds of severe foetal abnormalities. I talk to the Abortion Dream Team about the situation in Poland, how it came to be like this, and what their initiative (and many others) do to help women terminate a pregnancy if that's what they want to do.
We talk about contraception and why it can't be relied on to prevent abortions, why information about abortion should be included as part of sex education in schools, how even having an abortion law is stigmatising in itself, and we also go in depth as to why abortion is actually okay.
Just to clarify, I am an expat living in Poland, so I don't claim to know the whole situation as a Polish person might. However, as a feminist and being in the country, this issue interests me greatly. I didn't want to talk about the situation in Poland without talking to an organisation that actually knows what they're talking about. So please know I did my absolute best to inform myself the best way I could.
