Target Audience             This activity is targeted toward primary care physicians and advanced providers.

Statement of Need This podcast will address effective pain management in adolescents and teens and the utilization of opioids and risk reduction. Pediatricians may not have up-to-date knowledge and skills to effectively balance pain management with opioid safety in children and adolescents. Current practice often reflects underuse of multimodal pain strategies, inconsistent application of opioid prescribing guidelines, and limited screening for substance use disorders (SUDs) in youth. This educational activity addresses the gap between current and optimal practice by enhancing pediatricians' competence in evidence-based opioid prescribing and their performance in implementing risk mitigation strategies in clinical settings.

Objectives

  • Describe evidence-based guidelines for prescribing opioids in a manner that optimizes both pain treatment and safety for children and adolescents ("youth").
  • Discuss evidence-based strategies for the prevention, screening, and treatment for substance use disorders in youth.
