Many people value taking care of their loved ones but see taking care of themselves as selfish or a luxury they don’t have time for. But how do you take care of someone else if you’re sick or struggling? You can’t give what you don’t have.
My guests, Bridgette Arnett, MD, PhD., Board certified in Neurology, Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine; and Mawusi Arnett, MD, MPH, Board certified in Family Medicine and Obesity Medicine, discuss the emotional, mental, and physical barriers to optimal self-care. Plus self-compassion and an EMS (emergency medical service) tool box are essential for quality self-care, empowering you to give the best quality care to those who matter to you most.

· Why caregivers and some professionals ignore their self-care and work to the point of exhaustion
· What is chronic inflammation, some causes, and how it wreaks havoc on the body?
· Which emotions, mindset, and mental or physical illnesses can contribute to self-neglect
· How sleep apnea can stop your breathing up to 120 times per hour, which can severely impact health with the potential to lead to dementia
· How sleep deprivation is a major contributor to self-neglect, illness, and can reach the level of a DUI
· EMS Wellness Superpowers for daily self-care habits for brain and body health
· Ultra-processed foods, which make up 60-70% of our entire food system, are factory foods filled with industrial ingredients that are pro-inflammatory

The U.S. ranks the worst in maternal care and mortality rates compared to 10 other developed nations, despite spending the largest percentage on health care of all wealthy nations. Worse yet, two-thirds of the 700 pregnancy-related deaths that occur every year are preventable.
Dr. Dona Perry, a Board-certified OB/GYN and Medical Director of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, discusses the importance of support during pregnancy and postpartum care, communicating after pregnancy with someone who knows the warning signs of a problem, and how a doula educates and supports moms and babies during and after pregnancy, which significantly improves their health and decreases the occurrence of illness and death. Also, mental illness, including substance abuse, presents a significant threat to the health and well-being of the mother and child; and how nutrition is foundational to good brain health.

Many women strive for excellence every day for themselves and their families. The strong black woman, also called the black superwoman complex, is a strong, resilient, African-American woman, who strives for excellence in all areas of her life to prove she isn’t inferior or inadequate and that she's deserving of the same equal opportunities and access to meaningful resources and success as her white male counterparts. The sacrifice for her super achievements is the denial of her own pain and needs.
Bridgette Arnett, MD, PhD. and Mawusi Arnett, MD, MPH discuss:
· The economics and racial inequities that perpetuate the false narrative of the African-American woman’s inferiority in order to keep resources for a dominant patriarchy’s profit, power, and pleasure
· How this system conditions all women to meet the needs of others while ignoring their own
· How the recent resignation of former Harvard President, Claudine Gay, the only African-American female in Harvard’s history, illustrates her excellence wasn’t enough to prove her worthiness nor shield her from false accusations of plagiarism, and how she was discredited by a wealthy donor whose wife had actually committed plagiarism
· How does any of this apply to and have meaning for the average, hardworking woman
· How a tribal mentality and the fight for resources is designed to keep most Americans impoverished because the color that matters most is the color green
· If you don’t like you, you don’t value you and won’t take care of you. You have to like you to exercise self-compassion and take care of yourself.
· How your wellness super powers help you achieve and sustain health and wellness, including weight loss.
· How do we stop allowing others to define and confine us so we can live happy, healthy lives expressing our greatest potential!

The strong black woman, also called the black superwoman complex, is a strong, resilient, African-American woman, who strives for excellence in all areas of her life, driven in part by an effort to be seen as equal in a society that sees little value in her and believes she's undeserving of access to meaningful resources and success. The sacrifice for her super achievements is the denial of her own pain and needs.
Bridgette Arnett, MD, PhD. and Mawusi Arnett, MD, MPH discuss the origins, signs, and some of the adverse mental and physical health impacts of the black superwoman complex.
Learn:
· The origins, signs, and some of the adverse mental and physical health impacts of the black superwoman complex?
· The sometimes overwhelming challenges of mothers training to achieve excellence and become physicians
· Exercise as a cathartic release, reinvigoration, and treatment of mild-to-moderate depression
· How a tribal mentality and the fight for resources led to a social structure designed to maintain a dominant patriarchy’s profit, power, and pleasure

Veterans are at increased risk of committing suicide within the first year of leaving active duty and suffering job loss within 2 years after becoming a civilian. This is in direct contrast to the expectations of both veterans and employers, who expect great workplace success but are often mistaken and disappointed. Why are veterans more likely to fail in the civilian workplace the more successful they are in the military? What active duty supports and resources are lacking in civilian life? How do we—the loved ones, community, and businesses—help facilitate their successful transition to employment?
U.S. Navy Captain (retired) William Toti, author of “From CO to CEO: A Practical Guide for Transitioning from Military to Industry Leadership,” discusses these questions and offers solutions to facilitate veterans’ successful transition to civilian employment.
Learn about:
•What does PTSD look like?
•Why are veterans at increased risk of suicide?
•Why some veterans fail to succeed in their civilian careers?
•How to assist veterans in understanding their new, corporate missions.
•How companies can help ameliorate skill gaps for their new veteran employees and facilitate their successful civilian employment
•Changes veterans can make to ensure their successful transition to the civilian workforce
•Veteran and military mental health resources, including the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, where you can call, text, or chat 988.
