All time is happening at this exact moment. Therefore, Alex and Gabe can release a first round NBA playoffs preview in the middle of Game 2 and talk about any playoffs series ever. They get into 8 series and talk about the themes, narratives, coaching, and players that make it special. They question how three teams passed on Luka Doncic, why Anthony Davis and Lebron James refuse to play their best positions, if Nikola Jokic or Rudy Gobert could lead a team to a title, and give Carmelo Anthony some love (well, Gabe does). Here are the timestamps for the series discussed: 2015 Clippers-Spurs (4:27), 2020 Clippers-Mavericks (12:48), 2020 Lakers-Blazers (23:07), 2020 Denver-Utah (31:31), 2020 Bucks-Magic (43:39), 2009 Bulls-Celtics (49:02), 2011 Spurs-Grizzlies (54:44), and 2016 Miami-Charlotte (1:02:17).

COLLEGE FOOTBALL HAS BEEN CANCELLED (well not really). TREVOR LAWRENCE AND THE PLAYERS ARE UNIONIZING (in a way). NEBRASKA HAS GONE ROUGE (tbd). Gabe Ibrahim and Alex Lange get into how CFB leaders are failing the players, what collective player action looks like, and what Nebraska's season could look like if they do go rogue by looking at what happened the last time they played in a pandemic. OMAHA BALLOON SCHOOL IS HEAVILY DISCUSSED.

Manute Bol was a larger than life figure, both literally and figuratively. Alex tells Gabe about Manute’s story and Gabe tries to decipher what is true and what is not. As the hosts of Ball Through The Ages watched Bol Bol tear it in up in the NBA bubble for the Denver Nuggets, they started thinking about Bol’s father: Manute Bol. Manute, at 7’7”, stood out to NBA fans due to his height. But, he also stands historically for the tall tales about him, such as why he once hit a reporter in the head with a microphone. They start off by talking about Manute’s background/family history (5:56) and his unknown age (10:22). Then, Alex breaks down some of Manute’s crazy records he set with the Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, and….the Florida Beach Dogs (16:08). They also tell some of the other tall tales of Manute Bol floating around the NBA (23:06), including how he may have invented the phrase “My Bad” (34:15). Finally, Alex tries to stump Gabe with a game of “Did this happen?” about Manute’s post-NBA career (38:24) and talks about Manute’s activism in Sudan (46:30). Who are the four players that defined the last two decades of College Football? Ball Through The Ages make their picks on this show while calling out the brutality of Mount Rushmore. Gabe and Alex agreed on two consensus picks: Reggie Bush (7:13) and Ndamukong Suh (14:06). Then they argued over four players for the final two spots: Aj Hawk (25:40), Cam Newton (32:32), Baker Mayfield (39:18), and Deshaun Watson (45:06). There’s a lot of talk about the Alabama Crimson Tide, Clemson Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, and obviously the Ohio State Buckeyes (TALKIN BUCKS). Shockingly, Gabe didn’t pick any Miami Hurricanes on his Mount Rushmore. Follow us on twitter: @ballthroughtheages. Alex Lange and Gabe Ibrahim ask each other burning questions about the NBA Finals to wrap up a month-long look at the Finals. They talk about the wistfulness of the 2012 Oklahoma City Thunder, if Draymond Green counts as a “role player,” and A LOT about Boris Diaw. Timestamps for the questions:
* What is the most talented team to ever lose the NBA Finals?
* What’s the best clash of styles in Finals history?
* What’s more impressive: Lebron makes 8 straight Finals, Russell winning 11 Finals and coaching the last 2 in the 60s, or Michael Jordan’s 1993 Finals (41/8.5/ 6.3)?
* What is the worst team to ever win the NBA Finals?
* Who is the role player you most want in the NBA Finals?
Gabe and Alex investigate one of the NBA’s best “forgotten” Finals: the 1994 matchup. Get ready for a lot of hand-checking and illegal defense calls! They examine the odd structure of both the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks, where one hall of Famer was surrounded by...guys not in the Hall of Fame. In addition, they go in depth comparing and contrasting the two of the premier big men of the 1990’s: Hakeem Olajuwon and Patrick Ewing. They also evaluate how their games would transition to the modern day, what rule changes have most affected the modern NBA and Carl Herrera, the first Latinx person to ever win an NBA championship! Gabe and Alex explore the legacies of two NBA Hall of Famers, Wes Unseld and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, through the lens of Kareem’s first title in their 1971 finals clash. They explore the unique play of the late Wes Unseld, a superstar player with bruising style that the NBA will likely never see again. They also explore Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s long history of civil rights activism and how it has affected our perception of him. The podcast also touches on the constant circus of the NBA-ABA era, the greatness of Oscar Robertson, and the fact that the Washington Area Professional Basketball Team has always been run exactly the same way regardless of location, owner, or stars.
Show Notes
* SI article on Kareem’s life in LA in the late 70’s
* New York Times Magazine Piece on Kareem in 2015
* The Athletic’s Wes Unseld Obituary
* The Roast of Wes Unseld in 2014
