Gate 35 is The Gate of Change, in other words "I Experience.”Sylvia has done everything. Or close enough. She'll tell you about it either way — with such vivid, generous enthusiasm that you'll feel, for a moment, like you were right there with her.

Gate 16 is The Gate of Skills, in other words "I Identify.”Macca has hands like a docker’s — big, square, built for lifting. Not for this. Not for the tiny shuttle he holds between his thumb and forefinger with the careful attention of someone defusing something. Not for the thread, finer than a whisper, that he’s looping and knotting into lace. He has been doing it for eleven years. He will show you what he’s made. He will also show you the flaw.He has never once finished a piece without noticing the flaw.

Gate 20 is The Gate of Contemplation, in other words "I am. Now".Nico is not thinking about yesterday. Nico is not thinking about tomorrow. Nico is here, completely, in this moment, with the particular quality of presence that other people sometimes experience as slightly startling — as though he has arrived more fully in the room than most people manage, and is now looking at you with an attention that is, frankly, a lot. Nico lives in the now the way other people live in houses — completely, without apology, and with no particular interest in what the neighbours are doing. The now is not a practice for Nico. It is simply where he is.

Gate 8 is The Gate of Contribution, in other words "I Know I Can Contribute.”Cleo has something to offer. She has known this for as long as she can remember — not loudly, not with any particular need to make a point of it, but with the steady, unargued certainty of someone who knows what they carry. The glasses help, frankly. Not with the knowing. Just with everything else. Cleo knows she can contribute. She has always known this. She is also, these days, wise enough to wait until the everyone else knows it too.

Gate 23 is The Gate of Assimilation, in other words "I Know".Miranda knows. She has known since approximately Tuesday, though she couldn't tell you how she knows or show you the working. The knowing arrived, as it always does, fully formed and slightly startling, like a bird that has flown in through an open window and is now just sitting there on the furniture, entirely certain it belongs.Miranda has an insight. It is genuine, it is individual, and it arrived from somewhere she couldn't point to on a map. The question — and Miranda is working on this, she really is — is whether the room is ready to hear it yet.

Gate 2 is The Gate of Higher Knowing, in other words "I Know Where I am Going". Russell is not lost - he would like you to understand this clearly. Russell has absolutely no idea where he is going, which is entirely different. The car knows. Russell just hasn't quite managed to let go of the wheel.Russell has a direction. It was installed at birth, it runs on something deeper than logic, and it has never once required his input. Russell has been providing input anyway, enthusiastically and at some length, for the better part of seventy years.

Gate 24 is The Gate of Rationalising, in other words "It'll Come To Me".Pippa is processing. Pippa has been processing since approximately Tuesday. She couldn't tell you what she's processing exactly — that's rather the point. But she'll know when she knows, and she'll know it when she does, and in the meantime the song from the dentist's waiting room is on its fourteenth loop and showing no signs of stopping.Pippa has a knowing somewhere in the back of her mind that is absolutely on its way. Pip has been reassuring people of this since Thursday. It is now the following Wednesday. The knowing, for its part, is taking the scenic route.

Gate 27 is The Gate of Caring, in other words "Feed Everyone Else First".Dora has been making sure everyone has enough since before she could reach the kitchen counter. She is still not entirely sure what enough looks like for herself, but she’s working on it.Dora would give you her last biscuit, her last hour, and quite possibly her last reserves of anything she has left. The question nobody ever thought to ask — including Dora — is what Dora would like for lunch.

Gate 3 is The Gate of Ordering, in other words "Difficulty At The Beginning".Norman is at the beginning of something. Norman has been at the beginning of something for quite some time. This is not, Norman would like to stress, a problem. This is simply how beginnings work. Probably.Norman is on the verge of something extraordinary. Norman has been on the verge of something extraordinary for longer than he cares to admit. The something extraordinary is also, it should be said, on the verge of Norman.
