It’s Monday! That means it’s the Weekend Recap episode, which is always unlocked for everyone whether you’re a paid subscriber or just checking out Section 1904 for the first time.
With John Gennaro enjoying beignets and Hurricanes on Bourbon Street, Darren Smith sucked down a few double espressos and started the podcast talking about Craig Stammen’s introductory press conference earlier in the day on Monday. What were the key takeaways, what was appreciated and what questions we left unanswered from Stammen’s first appearance as Padres manager. Also, what’s the deal with AJ Preller’s contract and why wasn’t an announcement made today. Hear a portion of Stammen’s press conference and the reaction to the timeline of his candidacy from interviewer to interviewee.
Then, with vocal cords still a bit raw – but not as raw as Gus Johnson's – the podcast focused on San Diego Football Club’s near-perfect win against Portland Timbers, clinching a spot in the MLS Cup Western Conference semifinals. After a crushing defeat last weekend, how was it that the Chrome and Azul dominated Timbers in the series finale and what to make of Hirving Lozano’s role in the remaining matches.

With John out of town, Darren talks with former San Diego Padres manager Andy Green about new San Diego Padres manager Craig Stammen, who had Andy Green as his manager when he first joined the Padres as a free agent in 2017.

Jon Schaeffer from Jon & Jim on San Diego Sports 760am joined Darren Smith and John Gennaro today and we promise that there is plenty of San Diego State Aztecs talk, both about the football team and men's basketball team, but first...
The San Diego Padres finally announced a new manager hire and it's former Padres relief pitcher Craig Stammen, whose name never came up on the list of possibly or potential candidates for the role. Darren, Jon & John react to the news in real-time, giving their thoughts on the hire and wondering about how the team came to hire such an unusual candidate for the position.

Darren Smith and John Gennaro start off today's episode with a conversation about Tom Brady (and Paris Hilton) cloning dogs and how this is all exactly the same as Jurassic Park before switching to the San Diego Padres, who have lost Yu Darvish for next season and Victor Rodriguez for the foreseeable future, after he left the Padres to join the Houston Astros as their hitting coach.
The guys then welcome back to the show Adam Susman from The Timber Review to preview Sunday's "win or go home" Game 3 between San Diego FC and the Portland Timbers at Snapdragon Stadium. The guys talk about the refs, the difference between being at home versus on the road, changes teams have already made to their strategy, and everything a nerdy soccer fan would want to know heading into the most important game in SDFC history.
After Adam leaves, Darren talks about (finally) watching Game 7 of the World Series, they check in on SDSU and USD basketball, and eventually get around to talking about Election Night on Tuesday.

Darren Smith and John Gennaro kick off today's podcast by highlighting the criticism of San Diego State's attendance by the head football coach of the University of Wyoming. Was it over the line? Was it correct? Is it going to end up hurting Sean Lewis' recruiting efforts? Is there anything that can be done to solve this long-standing problem? Is this a side effect of San Diego viewing itself as Los Angeles' little brother?
Later, the guys welcome a friend of theirs to the show, Justin Lipford from the YMCA who is about to embark on the 5th annual "Solidarity Journey" to raise awareness and create solutions to end youth homelessness. They discuss tattoos, past walks, this year's walk, a community built by riding bikes, how local politicians have been able to help, and what the future holds. Follow Justin and David's journey and donate to their cause at SojoCali.org
After the interview, Darren and John try to remember the most they've ever walked in a single day before complaining about YouTube TV and keeping an eye on the professional European basketball players that have joined the USD basketball team this year.

Darren Smith and John Gennaro battled some internet issues while recapping a wild weekend that included the Los Angeles Dodgers winning games 6 & 7 in Toronto to take the World Series away from the Toronto Blue Jays, Fernando Tatis Jr. winning a Gold Glove in right field, San Diego FC letting the Timbers steal game 2 in Portland, and SDSU beating the crap out of the Wyoming offense.
Also, in the middle of the show, the Colorado Rockies announced that they were moving on from their finalists for President of Baseball Operations and the guys accidentally threw on some conspiracy hats to wonder how it related to the San Diego Padres and A.J. Preller.

We are lucky that the children of San Diego have a place like Rady Children's Hospital in town when the worst happens. Not just because of their expertise in care, but because how much thought has been put into child-sizing medical care and making the experience one that is a lot less scary than it otherwise would be.
That's why, when Section 1904 subscriber Mason reached out to me and told me about a video game-a-thon that he and his friends are a part of to raise money for Rady's Children Hospital, I asked if we could record a quick podcast where he told me all about it.
Here is the link to donate to Mason's goal of raising $1,250 for Rady Children's Hospital

In this extra long episode to get you ready for the weekend, Darren Smith and John Gennaro discuss the San Diego Padres' search for a new manager and wonder which journalist will break the news when it happens.
The guys then talk about the World Series, starting with how they're going to watch while passing out candy to trick-or-treaters tonight, and really focusing in on Blake Snell's comments after he lost game 5 for the Dodgers. That brings us to "Rate That Take", where Charles Barkley talks about the difference between coaches back in his day and today.
Darren and John then take turns ranking their top 5 sporting events of the weekend that they're looking forward to watching, spending extra time on San Diego FC, who are welcoming back Hirving "Chucky" Lozano in a substitute role in Portland on Saturday.
Finally, because it's Friday, the guys pull out some new recommendations in another episode of Try This!

Game 5 of the World Series went to the Blue Jays, who are set up really well to knock off the Dodgers, and the guys have thoughts on the game and the series as a whole.
