Darren Smith and John Gennaro spend some time with their emotions after the San Diego Padres' playoff hopes ended yesterday and talk about what comes next, Manny Machado getting defensive with reporters, and who was A.J. Preller talking to for hours after the game on the phone?
Later, the guys preview the upcoming weekend, talking about San Diego State trying to turn every home game into a big deal and San Diego FC trying to overcome some past demons against Houston on Saturday.

After a pretty terrible performance from the San Diego Padres in an elimination game at Wrigley Field, Darren Smith and John Gennaro get emotional and talk about what they hated while occasionally trying to find something to compliment the Cubs about.

Marty Caswell joins Darren Smith and John Gennaro from Chicago, where she has been covering every game of the NL Wild Card series between the Cubs and San Diego Padres, and talks about the difference in vibes after games 1 and 2 while answering questions about shadows, winds, weather and Manny Machado's sense of urgency.

With their backs against the wall, the San Diego Padres won game 2 of their Wild Card series with the Chicago Cubs by a score of 3-0 to tie the series at 1-1 and set up a win-or-go-home Game 3 tomorrow at Wrigley Field.
Darren Smith and John Gennaro got together right after the final out to talk about everything that went right for the Padres and what they're expecting tomorrow.

Since they missed each other on yesterday's post-game show, Darren Smith and John Gennaro get together to talk about what went wrong for the San Diego Padres in their 3-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs in game 1 of their Wild Card Round playoff series before looking forward to today's game 2 and trying to figure out why this team never seems to perform up to expectations.

The San Diego Padres fell to the Chicago Cubs by a score of 3-1, allowing the Cubs to take a 1-0 lead in the Wild Card series. To advance, the Padres will need to win tomorrow and Thursday at Wrigley Field without their best starting pitcher.
John Gennaro, all by himself, chatted with fans after the loss to talk about what happened and where the team goes from here.

A little later on today, the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs will play the first of two (or three!) games at Wrigley Field in Chicago to determine which team gets to move on and face the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Division Series.
Darren Smith and John Gennaro had a lot of questions about the 2025 Cubs coming into this series, so they called up their old buddy Judson Richards (who moved on from doing sports radio in San Diego to doing sports radio in Chicago) and pelted him with questions until they felt like they had a pretty good understanding of where things sat before the games begin.
After Judson leaves, the guys discuss Darren's comments about A.J. Preller from yesterday's podcast going viral on X and try to add some more context.
00:00 - Quick Padres-Cubs series preview / worrying about the rotation
14:00 - Judson Richards, our Cubs expert
61:30 - A.J. Preller's future in San Diego

Darren Smith and John Gennaro attempt to recap the sports weekend in San Diego but end up getting distracted by the potential changes that could be coming this offseason for the Padres. They also talk, at length, about their levels of optimism and/or pessimism heading into tomorrow's Wild Card Series in Chicago against the Cubs. (This is not the series preview podcast, that will be out tomorrow morning.)
They used the last few minutes of the podcast to explore what has happened to San Diego FC's offense and how it might be related to Hirving "Chucky" Lozano's reputation with the MLS referees. At the very very end, John gives his report on SDSU's win at Northern Illinois and what it means for the rest of this Aztecs football season.
00:00 - Padres vs. Cubs: Optimism vs. Pessimism / Changes coming in the offseason?
39:00 - Bunting as a postseason strategy / Love for Mudcat
53:00 - San Diego FC's struggles at home & on offense
62:30 - A win is a win for SDSU

Hey y'all, it's John. Happy Saturday.
I know it's been a while since I've done this, but I promised a few months ago that I would start a series of weekend podcasts called The Comment Section where I interviewed Section 1904 subscribers and got their story and/or perspective.
With all of the talk about Jimmy Kimmel being taken off the air and the stress around late night comedy being attacked by the administration, there was nobody I wanted to talk with more than my friend (and subscriber) Dallas McLaughlin.
Dallas is a comedian, as well as an actor, a producer, a podcaster, a father and a former rapper. He's also a San Diegan who has strong opinions about the arts, comedy and his First Amendment rights. So, I had him on to talk about the state of things and the dynamics of cancel culture, but first we had to give a shoutout to malls.
Dallas is performing tonight at the Grand Comedy Club in Escondido. Go see him! He's really funny!

There's a lot riding on the next few days for San Diego's sports teams. The Padres have a chance to move their Wild Card series from Chicago to San Diego, the San Diego Wave need a win to stay in the NWSL playoff hunt, San Diego FC can break a handful of MLS records with a win in their final home game of the regular season, and San Diego State's football team needs a win on the road against Northern Illinois to carry forward their momentum off of last week's win over Cal.
That's to say nothing of the sterling college football slate of games on Saturday and the Ryder Cup, which started today and will be going on all weekend long.
Darren Smith and John Gennaro cover all of it, and play another round of Try This!, to get you ready for the weekend.
00:00 - Ryder Cup / Trump threatens World Cup host cities
10:00 - Padres' final home stand / What's coming this offseason
42:00 - San Diego FC could break some records, but do they care?
50:00 - SDSU & the rest of college football
54:30 - Try This!
