Banjo Hangout Newest 100 Clawhammer and Old-Time Songs

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 2/12/16, this was recorded on Thanksgiving Day, 1951, by Nebraska fiddler Bob Walters. I learned it listening to Dwight Lamb, who was befriended and mentored by Mr. Walters after hearing him on the radio in the 1940's and driving from Iowa to seek him out. This is tune #80 in R.P. Christeson's Old-Time Fiddle Repertory, Vol. 1 collection.

I had done a version back in 2014, right after I had worked out the tune. This is a more current version recorded for at TOTW. I haven't really changed much in my approach.

Jeff Long and I have been working this up in key C ..... Im playing 2-finger banjo and we have been adding our fiddles and other stuff in there too ....just having fun with the tune.

A question was asked on the new Irish banjo forum if anyone plays slow Irish banjo tunes ? I was just working on one this week .... although I didn't have sheet music for it , I think I came pretty close ..I also tried to play my fiddle in a harmony-kind of way on this lament

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 2/5/16 I learned this one listening to the fiddling of Dwight Lamb. He learned it from Bob Walters and it's in keeping with those Missouri tunes that are very notey, resembling a hornpipe to my ears. I appreciate LyleK's reason for choosing it: he thought we needed at least one tune that starts with a Z. This will go well with my "Granny's tabs A-Z" notebook where I also needed a Z tune. Coincidentally, I had just got a 1999 CD of Dwight Lamb's called "Joseph Won a Coated Fiddle."
