Banjo Hangout Top 100 Clawhammer and Old-Time Songs

Played on 1923 Vega Tubaphone 10 15/16 pot with a new custom neck in double D tuning. Tune is similar to Billy in the Low ground.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 11/7/14, I'm learning that Cuffy is the name of several historic figures in the era of slavery. I'm impressed there's even a Guyana silver dollar coin with Cuffy's image. The timing of the tune feels unusual, but the only crooked part would be a half measure between the A and B parts. For the old-time Tune of the Week, 10/31/14. The history behind this name is fascinating. Check out the TOTW: http://www.banjohangout.org/topic/293687 George Washington called Peter Francisco his "one-man army." I discovered I have the 1976 US stamp created in his honor, carrying a half-ton cannon on his shoulder! The tune appeared in Knauf's "Virginia Reels" book in 1839. I'm playing on a Gold Tone cello banjo, so it's in the key of D, played in what's equivalent to open G tuning.

Had the elements of this for awhile and just finished it off with a C part today, but had no title, so.... In Sawmill tuning (gDGCD)

Peter Francisco is a tune found in Knauff’s “Virginia Reels,” published in 1839. Played clawhammer style by Bob Lanham, on a Reiter Bacophone-Plus open-back banjo.

A J.P. Fraley version of this delightful melody. He cited his source as Frank Clay. It sounds more like a hornpipe when I play it.

For the old-time Tune of the Week, 10/17/14, as played by Clyde Davenport. Learning this tune has got me looking at an old Christmas present I got one year called Homemade Instruments by Dallas Cline. Wouldn't that be a fun one to make!
