  • Visualize Utopia #4: Biomimicry feat. Naomi Cadena

    Send us Fan Mail

What's up to my etheric emus and lustrous lucky lionesses~

Welcome back to the BNP, y'all! Thank you for listening and supporting the pod. I appreciate you all.

The desert skies are cloudy, but the BNP is comin in clear with another dose of thought candy and idea gum.

This week, I have an intriguing utopian topic and a very special guest to teach us about it. Naomi Cadena holds an MS in biomimicry from the College of Global Futures at Arizona State University. Naomi was kind enough to join the pod and provide an introductory overview to this topic.

    So.
    What is biomimicry?
What function does it have for society?
What could biomimicry accomplish for our world?
What are the environmental impacts of biomimicry and how may it help to remediate existing damage to our habitat?
    Why else is biomimicry important?

These questions and much more are addressed in this week's interview. A big and heartfelt thanks to Naomi for hopping on the pod and educating us on this important topic. I hope y'all enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

What's up to my lovely lively llamas and amicable alchemical alpacas!

You've been navigating steep mountain passes with your malleable lil hooves, my lucky camel cousins! I see you. You are valid af.

Welcome to another rollicking weekly romp of those BNP vibes you know and love. This episode is ...ahhhhhhh... a chill, lowkey, feel good ep. You have permission to take deep breaths. You have permission to feel amazing. Permission to see the big picture, and permission to stay cognizant of the many blessings that dot the map of our shared, admittedly rocky 2020 experience.

2021 is right around the corner, so what better time to take a deep dive inside the mind, inside the body, inside the heart, inside the collective... and p a u s e.... and take stock of the real deal foundation that supports our daily trials and triumphs.

This episode we hear from jazz legend Sonny Rollins, who reminds us: It's all good. We also hear Nina Simone riff on the meaning of freedom, Arundhati Roy describe the pandemic as portal to a new world, Orson Wells recite John Brown's last words, Peter Joseph rap on the false scaffolding of Wall Street, and more. I also offer some recent personal anecdotes as well that track on a similar vibe.

So. Make yourself some Tulsi tea, kick your feet up, bundle up in your favorite hoodie and tune in. Enjoy :)

  • Visualize Utopia #3: Life After Cops

    Send us Fan Mail

What's up to my weird (in that good, quirky, fun kinda way) walruses and spectacularly speckled sea lions!

This episode is Part 3 of the BNP's Visualize Utopia series, and its aim is to envision a reality without cops as we know them. Last episode described the depth of the problems with modern U.S. law enforcement. This episode imagines real, tangible, achievable solutions.

A world without police is not only possible, but inviting and rewarding. We can bind together as communities and defend ourselves. We can treat each other with respect. We can strive to execute society in a just and egalitarian manner. And we can start doing this right now.

I don't know about you, but I'm done standing by while our precious and innocent brothers and sisters are shot dead in the street. A badge does not confer anything except the shared dream we all choose to accept. But we can dream another dream, a better dream, and a dream where every human life is known to be and treated as a sacred gift. Because you are a sacred gift.

What's up to my optimistic octopi and impish illustrative ibexes! You've been scaling old dams lately for mineral salts, my dear Siberian ibexes. I see you. You are valid.

This episode is a bit of a heavy one my lovies but it was what my soul was called to do. 52 years and 1 day ago, the great visionary, orator and revolutionary Fred Hampton was murdered by the FBI in Chicago. He was shot in his own bed after being drugged and betrayed by his police informant bodyguard.

Fred Hampton would be 72 years old if he were still with us today. Only in an alternate reality where he was not murdered by the FBI at just 21 years young would we know what great and inspiring accomplishments, speeches and victories would have adorned his life in 2020. But Fred Hampton was taken from us. Taken from all of humanity. Robbed from us by state sponsored terrorists with badges.

It is to this brutal white supremacist force of state sponsored terror,  still very much with us to this day, that this week's episode is devoted to deconstructing. In order to overcome we first have to understand.  It's time that we deconstruct, dissect and dismantle the police.

    As Sun Tzu said:
If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles.

Join the BNP on a rough and rocky journey to map the racist origins and ultimate spiritual intent of police forces and law enforcement agencies in the United States and Canada. What makes up the soul of the police? This episode is meant to get people thinking, not just about the fucked up-ness of the cops, but also to start imagining ways of triumphing over this force on the way to its inevitable abolition. Because make no mistake: eventually the police will not only be defunded but abolished altogether.

Consider this episode an extended prayer to that end.

Next episode we will explore the details of what society after police looks like. Spoiler alert: it looks safer, chiller and more fun.

Please rate, review and subscribe to the BNP! It really helps me out. It boosts the ALGORITHM y'all. And if I learned one thing at that Corporate Podcasting Convention I went to in Florida right as the pandemic struck, content is meh but ALGORITHMS ARE FOREVER. ROAR!

    Send us Fan Mail

What's up to my savage servils and feisty flowerpeckers!

Welcome back to another sizzling portion of that weekly BNP stir-fry of top shelf content, plus savory herbs and spices. Always made with coconut oil y'all. To keep it smooth. You know.

This episode is installment #2 in the BNP series Visualize Utopia. In this ep we dive into a topic that's near and dear to my heart and essential for the health of the planet and its occupants, including mammalian occupants like us.

So, come with me on a journey where we visualize Utopia by imagining crystal clear oceans. Oceans that have been scrubbed of all manmade pollutants. Oceans you could jump in anywhere. Anytime and not have to worry about chemicals or other contaminants. Oceans completely free of micro plastic, where turtles and whales can frolic and feed without any pieces of plastic ending up caught in their mouth, fins or stomachs.

Imagine such a world!! Utopian Oceana.... ahhhhhh.... makes me vibey and blissed just to type about it.  So...  grab your surfboard or your schooner and jump into a creative visualization of a world we'd all love to inhabit, including and especially our cetacean and fish friends, who would not have to worry about blasting air gun arrays that eff up their navigation systems any more.

Close your eyes... and dive in.

    Send us Fan Mail

What's up to my polymath panthers and purposeful porpoises!

Welcome back to the BNP y'all, another episode of splendor and glory. It's late and I'm tired, so this summary is gonna be short and sweet.

    Let's learn about vertical farming!

This episode is the first installment in a series that aims to meander down the forest trail of... Utopia. What would Utopia look like? What factors would need to be prioritized in a Utopian society? How would Utopia utilize agritecture to feed its people? This episode aims to address the food security side of Utopia by conveying the concept of Vertical Farming. There are currently several functioning vertical farms in the world, feeding people in big cities as we speak.

For the purpose of this series, I'm not going to dwell too heavily on the question of whether Utopia is possible. As far as I'm concerned, anything is possible. So we may as well strive for something dope.

*(José Julián Martí Pérez ; January 28, 1853 – May 19, 1895) was a Cuban poet, philosopher, essayist, journalist, translator, professor, and publisher, who is considered a Cuban national hero because of his role in the liberation of his country, and he was an important figure in Latin American literature. He was very politically active, and is considered an important revolutionary philosopher and political theorist.[1][2] Through his writings and political activity, he became a symbol of Cuba's bid for independence from the Spanish Empire in the 19th century, and is referred to as the "Apostle of Cuban Independence."0

What's up to my enchanting elephant seals and ergonomic echidnas! What are echidnas, you ask? Click here.

Thank you for listening and supporting the BNP yall! I'm sending oodles of soft sandy love from a warm and windy Saturday in the desert. My Meowzers and I are cold chillin on the Persian rug in my back greenhouse (that yes, does really tie the room together).

So. Here we are. Just a few days after the polls officially closed, and after some sketchy dark money wrangling, we finally know the victor of the hotly contested coroner's race in Joliet, IL, where acting Will County Coroner Laurie Summers held off a feisty challenge from insurgent Republican candidate James "Jim" Piacentini in her bid to succeed Patrick O'Neil as the next coroner of Will County. She did it! Well done little piggies, you can proceed to sip Riesling and ignore all politics for the next 4 years. Laurie's got you. (Hopefully not literally, because that would mean that you are dead. You know what I mean tho.)

Now that Summers is safely ensconced  and we can breathe easy knowing dead folks will be properly processed in Will county, we can all move on with our lives and focus on more important things, like opening up a synthetic designer psychedelic alkaloid boutique emporium lab in Washington D.C., now that psychedelics are decriminalized there. Give some acid to Mitch McConnell, stat. He needs it. And throw in some molly. Candy flip that creep show right onto his tortoise ass.

Anyhoo. This episode features an admittedly kinda windy chat with friend of the show Pete Koeneman. We discuss the recent electoral wins for drug policy in the U.S., and what it means moving forward. We also pontificate on the true meaning of utopia, and Pete catches me up on the local happenings on his home base of Maui. Coming soon will be the second part of this chat where we dig into some hard won nitty gritty notions of how to sustain sobriety from destructive substances in one's life.

I also pepper in some original poems this episode and a couple passages from a couple of my favorite thought-provoking books.

  • Final Rock Bottom: Crafting Sobriety from the Chaos of Alcoholism, Part Five

    Send us Fan Mail

What's up to my Bolivarian Bearcats and Zesty Zooty* Zebras!

This episode is the fifth installment of the Crafting Sobriety from the Chaos of Alcoholism series. If you're still with me on this journey, thank you for persisting and sharing this endeavor of recollection and reflection with me. I appreciate every one of you.

This episode will wrap up my personal story of achieving freedom from the bottle through blood (quite a bit of blood really), sweat and tears. To be totally honest with you, this was not an easy series to create. It's with a certain sense of calm relief that I conclude my story.

I am still inviting at least one more person (friend of the show... special surprise) to come on the pod and share their story, and that should be next week.

Also exciting: this episode I debut Dykotomi's new custom track just for the BNP, Magpie Mambo. He did such a good job with this track. Think if Cuban Mambo had a tryst with Filthy Bass. It rips. Big thank you to Dykotomi for continuing to support the BNP with his talent and generosity of spirit (and wubs, and whomps.... and untz). Check out Dykotomi on Soundcloud, he has bangers for days: https://soundcloud.com/dykotomi.

Generosity of Untz. I look forward to seeing the inaugural Bass Festival in 2021 that lifts that name. You're most welcome, future festie planner.

The moon is busily waxing! It will be full on Halloween, so strap in for that. The next week is an auspicious time to set goals and intentions for the next moon cycle.
