  • 021: Listening to Your Haters, Using Righteous Indignation & Heeding Warning Signs with THERESA REED

Today we get to talk with Theresa Reed. She's such a badass. She and I talk about what it means when everyone around you is second guessing, doubting your success, blatantly scoffing, and not believing the things you're putting out there.

We talk about how we can softly educate those around us who have a lack of understanding and a high level of fear. We don't want to cut off the friends and family who don't support us. We need people! We need that connection. But at the same time, sometimes the worst thing would happen if we didn't move forward and go do that thing that everyone else is scared of.

She and I also talk a little about the bravery of being a parent and how we can learn to listen to our gut and be present.

    Let's jump right on in!

    Brave Takeaways

What a fantastic batch of wisdom! Regardless what you think about all the mystical elements out there: tarot cards, astrology, omens, etc. - the advice is solid. It's important to heed the warning signs we see around us.

Sometimes we actually do need to listen to the warning signs. It takes a high level of openness to do that AND to summon the fortitude to move forward regardless of what others say or think about your ongoings.

    Brave Take-Aways

Okay, so beyond the Bare Naked Bravery Adult Coloring Book, your Brave Take-Away from today's show is 3-fold:

    • What is your support system? If you were to draw a net for your support, who would be holding the ends of that net for you?

    • Look toward your heroes. If you were to have a "Wall of Heroes" who would be on that wall?

    • Take time out to dream. Take 5 minutes to do nothing. Lie there and do nothing. Let your brain dream.

  • 019: Declaring Bankruptcy, Defining Your Value & The Power of Connection with Karly Nimmo

Karly Nimmo joins us today all the way from Australia! Karly and I know each other through the beauty of social media. She is a born communicator. She's an ex-radio jock, producer & copywriter, current in-demand Voice Over Artist and has run her successful Voice Over Agency (Killer Kopy) for over a decade. There's a pretty slim chance you haven't heard her voice. She's worked with everyone from Telstra, BHP, eBay, Panasonic, Qantas to Coles-Myer and ANZ. Karly's also an avid and successful podcaster, with her number one iTunes hit, Karlosophies - Stories Behind Success. Her current mission is to rid the world of shit sounding podcasts.

Because we both have podcasts, Karly and I thought it'd be fun to trade interviews with each other! So we've magically coordinated to have my interview of her publish the same day her interview of me goes live on her own podcast! Fun, huh?

All that is fantastic, but today Karly and I talk about depression, bankruptcy, and how to hold our big emotions and be vulnerable with the world. Karly is delightful and so is this conversation. Let's jump on in.

Okay, so beyond the Bare Naked Bravery Adult Coloring Book, your Brave Take-Away from today's show is that 5 step plan for when you find yourself "in the thick of it"

I've created a little image for you to print off and put on your mirror or near your coffee maker as a reminder that you still have choice, even when you find yourself all foggy and in the throes of feeling kinda icky about life.

That little take-away image is available in the show notes for this episode. Go to barenakedbravery.com, find Karly's episode and abracadabra. It's all yours!

  • 018: At Death's Door, Fighting For Life & Loving with Your Whole Heart with singer-songwriter Jake Hemming

Today's guest on the show is Jake Hemming. This guy is one of the best song-storytellers I've ever heard. You'll hear a sample of his story telling skills as the episode unfolds and get a peek into what it looks like to delve into the tough parts of life by being strong through the sensitive moments.

Jake and I talk about the friends we have in common, the ones we love dearly and who are also epically brave and strong. We talk about the honesty required to go through grief and bereavement. We talk about the necessity of community after someone has passed on. We talk about how hilarious his daughter is. and he introduces us to Max & Vivian, a duo from the corners of society featured in his new songwriting.

You're gonna just love this guy.

    Brave Take-Aways

After recording this conversation, I went for a walk outside. Somehow everything seemed a little more sparkly than usual. There's nothing like talking about death to make you really take an honest look at life.

Thank you Jake for giving us that gift.

Okay so as this episode wraps up, I'd like to challenge you to do or say one thing you'd like to do or say before you die. If for some reason you or a loved one didn't have a whole lot of time left, what would you want to say? Which stories would you want to retell? Whose neck would you want to hug a little tighter? Which phone numbers would you call one last time? Maybe it's something you'd like to say in a simple tweet or email? Maybe it's a random text to someone you haven't heard from in a while? Just say what you need to say.

If you took this challenge and want to let Jake or I know. You can tag either of us in a social media message or shoot either of us an email. Jake Hemming and I are both on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and more. All those links, along with the other resources we mentioned are in the show notes for this episode.

Welcome to episode 17 which features my conversation with Bari Tessler.

Bari is a Financial Therapist, Mentor Coach and Mama-preneur. She and I had such a great conversation, There's so much ground we covered. I know I personally needed a good week to digest everything she and I discussed.

Today she and I start talking about where she learned about this concept of value, self-valuation, and how we measure and exchange value interpersonally. We also share our own respective stories of having to make the super tough decisions to walk away from something when it's just not right. We talked about how money and wealth is never a quick fix. We talk about what it means to "feel" your decisions with your body and sooo much more.

This conversation automatically puts Bari onto my wall of heroes. I'm pretty sure that by the end of this conversation, you'll agree with me.

  • 016: Selfies, Self-Image, and Finding Belonging with visual artist BETHANY WRAY

Bethany Wray joins us today all the way from a magical place which is also how I came to know her. Bethany currently resides at the Grunewald Guild in Leavenworth, WA. You'll hear some more about the Grunewald Guild and what it does for artists like Bethany and myself.

Since Bethany is a super-gifted visual artist, she and I talk about the visual side of finding your sense of self. We talk about the role vulnerability, social media, and how scary it is to ask someone to actually see you. We also discuss what it means to find a new place of belonging, especially as a spiritual being and visual artist. Towards the end, Bethany drops the mic multiple times around this topic too.

Bethany has worked for a number of art non-profit organizations including the Armory Center for the Arts in Pasadena and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. A large part of her work at the Grunewald Guild involves creating safe and welcoming spaces for people to engage art. Her experience in art education has created the desire for art to be accessible to all and for everyone to have the courage to view themselves as an artist.

When Bethany isn't working, she is off exploring the natural surroundings of her backyard, busily working in the studio, or enjoying the company of her Holland Lop rabbit named Franklin - who makes a precious appearance later in the conversation.

  • 015: Miracle Mornings, Bootstrap Confessions, & Other Ways to Slice Through Resistance with Filmmaker NICK CONEDERA

Nick Conedera is a film-maker and fellow brave artist. You're going to love some of the stuff we cover in today's episode. He is the guy behind the movie SHARP, which is available on iTunes and Amazon right now. (Go and watch it later, you will love it.)

He's also doing this fascinating project right now working with Hal Elrod who wrote the best-selling book titled "Miracle Morning." If you've been in the self-help scene in the last several years, then you know who Hal Elrod is. Now, Nick and I do some talking about the book, but what you'll learn from our conversation is some of the ways Nick is witnessing his own bravery through this project.

I just want to thank Nick publicly for getting raw and honest about what it means to struggle, how to ask for help, how to admit to reality, and for revealing what it means to wrestle with being disciplined in the life of making brave art. It takes a lot of guts to answer some of the questions I ask in this episode, but somehow... I had this inkling that Nick was up for the challenge.

And I think you'll agree with me he is a gracious communicator with a powerful perspective...

    Brave Take-Aways

Today's Brave Take-Away is also a Pay-It-Forward act and something done in real life. I'm not going to ask you to download anything (although you can always download the Bare Naked Bravery Coloring book for free) but today's Brave Take-Away is to write a super quick note of encouragement to someone. It doesn't have to be a novel. A simple one-sentence text will do. But pick someone who you would hate to see stop doing what they are doing. Pass on some extra fortitude and determination to them. Tell them to keep going.

I know personally, the most powerful encouragement I've ever received was 2 words. It was simply "Don't Stop." and it came to me from a total stranger who had no idea that I needed to hear that soooo badly. You never know what will happen from a message like that.

Nick and I would *love* to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. You can find Nick Conedera and myself on facebook, twitter, instagram, and more. Feel free to tag us so we can cheer you on and see what you're up to.

  • 014: Foolish Desires, Tall Poppies, & Falling in Love with ADINA COOMBER

Adina Coomber joins us today from Perth, Australia. Now, she'll do a really great introduction of who and what she is here in a second, but I just have to say that one of my favorite parts of today's conversation about Bravery is just how clearly Adina portrays her experience. The rollercoaster she's been on is thrilling and even that word seems understated. I think she'd agree with me on that fact.

Today you'll hear us talk about redefining what it means to be a hero, especially as it pertains to living in a brand new country. We also talk about our foolish desires: stating them clearly (out loud) and finding new strength in yourself as a result of it. We'll talk about how imagination and intuition play a role in attaining your brave desires. We also talk a little about how our physical bodies can display our feats of bravery whether we like them to or not.

You know, after I stopped recording our conversation Adina and I were commenting on the fact that other people's interpretations of your bravery will often have more to do with their own stuff than it does with your stuff. It's a whole other layer of courage to acknowledge that fact and live it out.

    Brave Take-Aways

Okay, so beyond the Bare Naked Bravery Adult Coloring Book which is, your Brave Take-Away from today's show is...

a "Tall Poppy" worksheet I've whipped up all around this idea of Foolish Desires. Sometimes we need a little prick to let our feelings go wild and grow into a tall poppy. You can download that by going to our show notes today, which will also have a link to the book Adina mentioned earlier.

We'd love to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. You can find Adina Coomber and myself on Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and more. Go ahead and tag us so we can cheer you on and see what you're up to.
